01Overview
Project Diablo 2 does not end at Hell Baal. Once your character clears Hell, the game opens three systems that feed each other: endgame maps (area level 87 to 92), uber and pinnacle bosses with their own entry items, and item crafting through corruption, crafting recipes and rerolls. Almost everything you kill drops something that moves one of these forward: Worldstone Shards, maps, uber keys, runes, boss ingredients.
This guide is the map of that loop. It tells you what each level unlocks, which boss to aim for next and what to do with the loot. The details live in the dedicated guides: Mapping, Magic Find and Farming, Early Ladder Farming and one guide per uber boss.
Gear-gated, not level-gated
Only two things in the endgame have a hard level gate: maps need clvl 80 and the Hell Ancients killed, and the best rewards have item level requirements (Annihilus clvl 70, Hellfire Torch clvl 75). Everything else depends on your gear. Move on when your character clears the current step comfortably, not when it reaches a number.
02What unlocks when
| Stage | What opens up | What to do there |
|---|---|---|
| Hell, clvl ~70-80 | Hell Baal kill: corrupted zones. Area level 85 zones drop every item in the game. Hell bosses drop uber keys and essences. | Farm level 85 zones and the corrupted zone, collect keys from Hell bosses, finish Anya in Hell for your first maps. |
| clvl 80 | Maps (with the Hell Ancients killed). Anya's Hell reward includes your first tier 1 map. | Run safe tier 1 maps, keep every map and orb you find, start corrupting cheap bases with shards. |
| Early maps | Map bosses (Pure Demonic Essence), map events, Sigils of Madawc from tier 1 maps. | Open your first mini ubers with three keys, then Uber Tristram once you have the three organs. |
| Tier 2-3 maps | Higher map affix ranges and more loot, Sigils of Talic and Korlic, Horadrim Scarabs from map bosses that turn tier 3 maps into dungeons. | Juice rare maps, fight tier 0 pinnacle bosses, upgrade gear through trades and corruptions. |
| Late endgame | Tier 1-2 pinnacle bosses with exclusive uniques, area level 92 dungeons. | Push tier 2 bosses, corrupt your best items, farm dungeons in a strong group. |
03Before you leave Hell
Maps and ubers punish the same gaps that Hell Act 5 already shows. Fix these first:
- Resistances: fire, cold and lightning at the 75% cap after the Hell penalty, with poison as high as you can manage. Map affixes and boss curses lower them further, so extra resistance above the cap is worth having.
- Anya in all three difficulties: +30 all resistances in total, and her Hell reward includes your first tier 1 map.
- The Hell Ancients: without that kill you cannot open maps, even at clvl 80.
- Hit recovery and life: one or two Faster Hit Recovery breakpoints and enough Vitality to survive a bad pack. Your build guide lists the targets.
- A mercenary that survives: most build guides recommend an Act 2 merc with Insight early; check yours.
- Hell Baal killed: this unlocks corrupted zones for every Hell game you create.
04The endgame loop
Every endgame activity drops currency or ingredients for the next one. A typical session mixes three of them:
- Maps are the core. They give the most experience and drop more maps, map orbs, Worldstone Shards, sigils, boss ingredients and the best general loot. The Mapping guide covers tiers, orbs and juicing.
- Corrupted zones are the bridge between Hell and maps and a steady source of shards, tier 1 maps and the Talisman of Transgression. The farming guide explains how the rotation works.
- Uber bosses turn ingredients into the strongest charms and items in the game: Hellfire Torch, Annihilus, the Tainted Worldstone Shard and amulet desecration.
What you do not need, you trade. The ingredients for every uber boss are tradeable, so a build that maps fast but cannot kill a pinnacle boss can sell its keys and essences, and a boss killer can buy them.
05The uber boss ladder
Each uber needs an entry item cubed from three ingredients. The first two steps build on each other: the keys open the mini ubers, their organs open Uber Tristram, and Uber Tristram drops the Black Soulstone that Diablo Clone needs.
Bosses in the order most players fight them
| Boss | Entry item | Ingredients come from | Main reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini ubers (Lilith, Uber Duriel, Uber Izual) | One each of Key of Terror, Key of Hate, Key of Destruction | Hell Countess and Blood Raven, Summoner and Bloodwitch the Wild, Nihlathak and Izual; the Spire of Darkness map event | Diablo's Horn, Baal's Eye, Mephisto's Brain |
| Uber Tristram | Pandemonium Talisman | The three organs from the mini ubers | Hellfire Torch + Black Soulstone |
| Diablo Clone | Vision of Terror | Prime Evil Soul (Hell act bosses), Black Soulstone (Uber Tristram), Pure Demonic Essence (map bosses) | Guaranteed Annihilus |
| Rathma | Voidstone | Splinter of the Void (Shadow of Mendeln map event), Trang-Oul's Jawbone (Hell undead), Hellfire Ashes or a Hellfire Torch | Guaranteed Tainted Worldstone Shard |
| Lucion | Shadow of Hatred | Demonic Insignia (Act 5 red-portal zones), Talisman of Transgression (corrupted zones), Flesh of Malic (demons) | One amulet desecration (a second corruption) |
| Uber Ancients | Relic of the Ancients | Sigil of Madawc (tier 1 maps), Sigil of Talic (tier 2), Sigil of Korlic (tier 3) | One Standard of Heroes per Ancient fought |
Diablo Clone, Rathma and Lucion have three tiers: cube the entry item on its own to cycle it from tier 0 to 1 to 2. Tier 0 allows three re-entries; tiers 1 and 2 allow none but add better rewards: a 1 in 200 chance at an exclusive unique from Diablo Clone and Rathma, a Demonic Cube chance and better desecration odds from Lucion.
06Turning loot into gear
PD2 has no gold economy between players. Progress comes from three kinds of currency and three ways to spend it.
Currency
- High runes (Vex Rune and up) price the expensive items. Mid runes from Lem Rune to Gul Rune trade much the same way early in the season.
- Worldstone Shards are the everyday currency for cheap uniques, skillers, bases and crafting materials. They drop throughout Hell, more in corrupted zones and maps, and 4-10 at a time from the Dark Wanderer map event.
- Uber ingredients (keys, organs, essences, sigils, Splinters, Lucion parts) trade at stable prices because every boss killer needs them.
Spending it
- Corruption: cube an item with a Worldstone Shard for sockets or a corruption modifier, at the risk of turning it into a random rare. Corrupt white runeword bases and spare copies, never your only build-defining item.
- Crafting: a magic or rare item of the slot, a Jewel, a rune and a perfect gem. Crafted item level is half your character level plus half the base's item level, so craft late: a clvl 88 character crafting a gambled amulet reaches item level 90, the minimum for +2 class skills.
- Rerolls: a magic item plus 3 perfect gems keeps its item level and rolls new affixes. This is how grand charm skillers are made. A Demonic Cube rerolls the stats of a unique or set item, including Annihilus and the Hellfire Torch.
Sockets come from the Larzuk quest, Larzuk's Malus (sold by Larzuk), Larzuk's Puzzlepiece and Larzuk's Puzzlebox (the only one that works on uniques and sets) and the socket cube recipes.
Identify your rares
Season 14 made many strong affixes dropped-rare only: +2 class skills on rare chests, helms and shields, +3 skill-tab rolls on rare class weapons and maximum-resistance rolls on belts and shields. Rares from maps are worth picking up and identifying, both for your own character and for trade.
07Which build for which goal
Most builds can do all of it eventually, but some are much better at one part of the loop.
- Fast mappers clear whole screens: Poison Nova Necromancer, Lightning Fury Javazon, Fire Elemental Druid, Cold Elemental Druid, Frozen Orb Sorceress, Wake of Fire Trapsin and War Cry Barbarian.
- Boss killers handle the pinnacle fights: Blade Sentinel Assassin does all of them, Blizzard and Meteor Sorceress are comfortable on Diablo Clone.
- Cheap starters that reach maps and their first ubers on budget gear: Meteor Sorceress, Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens Paladin and Summon Amazon.
The build guide hub ranks every build for mapping, bossing and league start.
08FAQ
Should I farm Hell or go straight into maps at level 80?
Go into tier 1 maps as soon as your resistances are capped and your build kills Hell Act 5 packs quickly. Maps give more experience and drop the ingredients for everything else. If tier 1 maps feel dangerous, farm level 85 zones and the corrupted zone for gear first; they drop the same items, only less of everything else.
Which uber boss should I do first?
The mini ubers. Their keys drop in Hell before you ever open a map, their organs lead to Uber Tristram, and Uber Tristram's Black Soulstone is needed for Diablo Clone. Rathma and Lucion are harder fights that come later, and the Uber Ancients need sigils from all three map tiers.
Do ladder and non-ladder have different endgame content?
No. Every map, uber boss and runeword exists in ladder, non-ladder and single player. The difference is the economy: the current ladder has the most players and trades, and everyone starts fresh when the season resets.
Is a Token of Absolution expensive?
No. A Token of Absolution is cubed from the four essences that Nightmare and Hell act bosses drop, and the essences trade cheaply. Respeccing into an endgame build or a dedicated boss setup is a normal part of the endgame.
