01Overview
Season 14 rating
hiimpd2 S14 solo: Top; hiimpd2 S14 group: Decent; hiimpd2 bossing: not rated; Odealo (2026-09-28, pre-launch): S
Frozen Orb is in the Top tier of hiimpd2's Season 14 solo tier list (the build's benchmark clear is Pandemonium Citadel in 4:30, recorded in Season 12) and Decent on the group list. It did not move between S13 and S14 on hiimpd2's change page. hiimpd2's bossing tier list (Vision of Terror, Voidstone, Shadow of Hatred) does not rate Frozen Orb at all; the cold Sorceress rated there is Blizzard. Odealo's S14 tier list (last updated 2026-09-28, before launch) puts Frozen Orb in S tier and the Combustion/Frozen Orb hybrid in A tier. This is a mapping build first: very strong clear in open maps, solid but unproven (by the tier lists) on pinnacle bosses, and limited by cold immunes like every cold Sorceress.
Summary
The Frozen Orb Sorceress casts a slow-moving orb of ice that sprays Ice Bolts in every direction while it travels, then bursts into a final ring of bolts. Per the PD2 wiki the orb lives 1.8 seconds (45 frames), travels 14 yards, fires a bolt every frame, and explodes into 16 more bolts at the end of its path. The orb itself does no damage, only the bolts do. One cast hits a large area many times: Odealo counts 5-10 hits on a typical target and close to 20 when the orb explodes right next to it. All damage is cold, so everything you hit is chilled and some monsters freeze, which makes the build feel safe while mapping.
PD2 differences that shape the build:
- No cooldown. Frozen Orb has no cooldown in PD2, so more Faster Cast Rate means more orbs.
- Slow cast frames. In exchange it uses the 'slow' Sorceress FCR table, like Chain Lightning (PD2 wiki Breakpoints). Your FCR targets are 78% and 117% instead of the usual 63/105.
- Synergies are small. Frozen Orb gets +4% damage per hard point in Ice Bolt and Frost Nova (S14 Skills.txt), so both synergies maxed give +160%. Cold Mastery adds +% cold damage and cold pierce (capped at 45%). In S14 data, Cold Mastery at level 20 gives +48% cold damage and 24% pierce.
The community-standard setup is Hiim's S14 'Frozen Orb' planner on hiimpd2: Frozen Orb, Ice Bolt, Frost Nova and Cold Mastery at 20, Teleport at 19, everything else at 1 point, all spare stats in Vitality. Odealo's Frozen Orb guide recommends the same skill core and the same Vitality approach.
Who it is for: players who want a fast, comfortable mapper with Teleport mobility, good crowd control and a smooth gear curve. Odealo's S14 tier list calls Frozen Orb 'a smoother and more forgiving approach' than Nova. Weak points: cold immunes (the hardest immunity to break, per Odealo), the slow FCR table, and no hiimpd2 bossing rating.
What works
- Top tier on hiimpd2's S14 solo list; S tier on Odealo's S14 tier list (pre-launch)
- Huge area coverage: one orb sprays bolts over a wide area and hits each target many times
- Cold chills everything and freezes some monsters, so packs move and attack slower (Odealo: 'very safe thanks to Freeze')
- No cooldown in PD2: every FCR breakpoint is more damage
- Teleport mobility; stats go into Vitality, so the build has a large life pool
- Many cold-specific items at every budget (Death's Fathom, Medusa's Gaze, Nightwing's Veil, Snowclash, +1 Cold Skills grand charms)
What to plan around
- Cold immunes: cold is the hardest immunity to break (Odealo), even Infinity's Conviction does not break every one
- Slow FCR table: 78% and 117% are the breakpoints, so FCR is more expensive than for Nova or Blizzard
- Not rated on hiimpd2's bossing tier list; Blizzard is the cold Sorceress that is rated there
- Orb explosion bolts do no damage when the orb hits a wall, so narrow, twisty maps lower your damage
- Needs 80+ points in the cold tree before it comes online, so most players level as fire (Meteor) and respec
- Hiim's endgame staff (crafted, corrupted to 6 sockets with cold facets) is a lottery item
Playstyle
Teleport next to a pack, aim each Frozen Orb so it ends its flight inside or just past the pack, cast again until the pack is dead, Teleport on. Frozen Orb has no cooldown in PD2, so you spam it. Hiim's planner keeps every utility skill at 1 point and puts 19 points into Teleport. Odealo explains why: spare points go into Teleport to shrink the damage debuff PD2 applies after each Teleport.
Rotation
- Precast Shiver Armor (1 point; S14 gives it +20% retaliation damage per Frost Nova level). In the endgame, switch to the swap weapons for Battle Orders (Hiim's planner: Call to Arms + Lidless Wall)
- Teleport so the pack sits 5-10 yards in front of you, not on top of you
- Cast Frozen Orb through the pack. The orb sprays bolts on the way and explodes at the end of its 14-yard path, so the best spot for it to end is inside the pack
- Keep casting. There is no cooldown, so FCR sets your damage per second
- Mop up survivors next to you with a Frost Nova (maxed as a synergy in Hiim's planner, so it hits hard), then Teleport to the next pack
Positioning: Range is everything. The orb needs room to fly: its explosion bolts only deal damage when the orb reaches the end of its path, not when it hits a wall (PD2 wiki). Stand where the orb has a clear 14-yard line through the pack, and aim along corridors rather than into walls. Cold chills everything you hit, so melee packs reach you slower. Teleport away from anything that closes in instead of tanking it. Don't stand still in packs of ranged casters; keep moving between casts.
Bossing: Honest answer: Frozen Orb is not rated on hiimpd2's bossing tier list (Vision of Terror, Voidstone, Shadow of Hatred). The cold Sorceress rated there is Blizzard (Diablo Clone T0 Easy, T2 Moderate). Odealo's Frozen Orb guide (S13 era) lists 'high damage against bosses' as a pro. Mechanically, a big target standing where the orb explodes takes the most bolts: Odealo counts almost 20 hits from one orb exploding right next to the target. Cast from close range so the orb explodes on or just past the boss, and keep moving. Boss cold resistances per hiimpd2's T0 guide: Diablo Clone 30%, Lucion 30%, Rathma 50% (compiled up to S13). Cold Mastery pierce plus -cold resistance gear handles those. For ubers and T0 bosses, take the community-rated Blizzard guide's advice into account and test at T0 first.
Mapping: This is the build's home. hiimpd2's tier list benchmarks Frozen Orb on Pandemonium Citadel at 4:30 (recorded in Season 12). Open, dense maps suit it best because orbs fly their full path. Map modifiers to avoid or reroll: cold immunity, extra cold resistance and 'monsters deal extra cold damage' rolls. S14's three new maps (The Poisoned Well T1, The Descent from Mount Arreat T2, The Fortress of Aranoch T2) have no immunities in their first season per the S14 patch notes, so cold immunes are not a problem there. Mana: Frozen Orb costs about 23.5 mana at level 20 (wiki), so use Silkweave's mana after each kill, Warmth and the merc's Insight while you build up.
02Skills
Level 30 · 33 skill points
- Inferno 14
- Meteor 7
- Fire Ball 6
- Blaze 1
- Fire Bolt 1
- Fire Wall 1
- Telekinesis 1
- Teleport 1
- Warmth 1
Skill order
- Levels 1-~70: follow the class leveling guide (Inferno -> Leaf -> Meteor)
- Respec (Akara in Hell or Token of Absolution) once Hell is cleared and you have the cold gear core
- 1 point each: Ice Bolt, Ice Blast, Frost Nova, Glacial Spike, Blizzard (prerequisites)
- Max Frozen Orb
- Max Frost Nova (synergy + mop-up skill)
- Max Cold Mastery (damage + pierce)
- Max Ice Bolt (synergy)
- 1 point each: Telekinesis, Teleport, Warmth, Cold Enchant, Shiver Armor
- All remaining points into Teleport (19 at clvl 95 in Hiim's planner)
- Optional (Hardcore): Charged Bolt, Lightning, Chain Lightning 1 each + a few points in Energy Shield (pjiy)
Synergies
Per the S14 Skills.txt:
- Frozen Orb gets +4% cold damage per hard point in Ice Bolt and Frost Nova. With both at 20 that is +160%. Base bolt damage at level 20 is about 116-140 (wiki table, matches Skills.txt).
- Cold Mastery gives +10% cold damage at level 1, +2% per level after that, plus cold pierce (5% +1% per level, capped at 45%). At level 20 that is +48% damage and 24% pierce, and +skills keep raising both. Pierce does not break immunities (wiki).
- Frost Nova is maxed as a synergy, but it is also a real mop-up skill: it gets +8% per hard point in Ice Bolt and Shiver Armor (S14: up from 7%).
- Shiver Armor (1 point) gets +20% retaliation damage per Frost Nova level since S14 (was Cold Enchant), so 20 Frost Nova points make it +400% for free.
- Prerequisites: Frozen Orb needs Blizzard, which needs Frost Nova and Glacial Spike; Glacial Spike needs Ice Blast, which needs Ice Bolt. Teleport needs Telekinesis; Shiver Armor needs Cold Enchant.
- Teleport is the rest of the budget: 19 points in Hiim's planner. Odealo says the same: leftover points go into Teleport to reduce the post-Teleport damage debuff.
- Energy Shield is optional. Odealo says there are not enough points for max Energy Shield and full damage, so the standard build is Vitality. pjiy's Hardcore starter planner puts 5 points into it (it needs Chain Lightning, Lightning, Charged Bolt and Teleport).
About these skill plans
- Leveling (Meteor route from the class guide) (level 30): 33 points = 29 from levels + 4 Normal quest points. Frozen Orb needs clvl 30 and five cold prerequisites, and its damage only comes online with its two synergies and Cold Mastery. So the community route is to level as fire and respec later. philanthropy777's progression guide (linked on hiimpd2 as the Frozen Orb build guide) plays Meteor on Day 1 and Frozen Orb in the endgame, and Odealo's Combustion/Frozen Orb guide also levels as fire first. This tier is the state of our class leveling guide (Inferno -> Leaf -> Meteor) at clvl 30. It is not a Frozen Orb allocation.
- First Frozen Orb setup after the respec (level 75): 86 points = 74 from levels + 12 quest points. These are the skills of Hiim's planner minus 2 Ice Bolt points and 18 Teleport points, which come later. Order: Frozen Orb first, then its synergies, then Cold Mastery (Odealo). We max Frost Nova before Ice Bolt because Frost Nova is also your mop-up skill; both give Frozen Orb the same +4%. Teleport stays at 1 until clvl 76+, as Odealo advises.
- Endgame (Hiim's planner) (level 95): 106 points = 94 from levels + 12 quest points. Copied 1:1 from Hiim's S14 'Frozen Orb' planner (clvl 95). From here, each level-up point goes into Teleport (20 at clvl 96). Energy Shield variant: pjiy's S14 Hardcore starter takes 1 point each in Charged Bolt, Lightning and Chain Lightning plus 5 in Energy Shield. Odealo says a non-maxed Energy Shield loses a lot of efficiency, so take it only as a Hardcore safety layer.
Dealing with immunities
Cold immunes are this build's main weakness. Odealo: 'Cold Immunity is hardest to break', and sometimes 'even the Lower Resist Curse and Conviction Auras together are not enough, and you have to abandon the fight'. What the sources use:
- Infinity (Polearm/Spear) on the Act 2 merc (Odealo; Hiim's cold reference planner): Conviction at aura level 12 lowers cold resistance. PD2 applies resistance reduction at half effectiveness against immune monsters, so it breaks many cold immunes, but not those with very high cold resistance. Example (approximate, assuming about -34% Conviction): a monster with 110% cold resistance drops to about 93% and becomes hittable.
- Lower Resist procs: Medusa's Gaze (when struck) and Mang Song's Lesson (on casting) can break immunities under the same half-effectiveness rule (Odealo).
- Skip or reroll: Hiim's own planner has no immunity breaker (Act 3 Static merc with defensive auras). Teleport past cold-immune packs, reroll maps with cold immunity, and play S14's new maps, which have no immunities in their first season.
- Cold Mastery, Nightwing's Veil, the Subzero staff prefix and cold Rainbow Facets are pierce: they never break an immunity on their own (wiki Cold Mastery note), but they hit hard once it is broken.
- Combustion/Frozen Orb (Odealo, A tier) solves this with a second element. It is a different, fire-first build.
03Stats
Strength for gear, everything else in Vitality, no Dexterity or Energy (Hiim's planner and Odealo). 5 points per level plus 15 from Lam Esen's Tome give 485 points at clvl 95: Hiim splits them 204 Strength / 281 Vitality.
| Attribute | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Strength | Enough for your gear. Hiim's planner uses 204 points of Strength at clvl 95 (214 total with the base 10), because Steel Carapace (Shadow Plate) needs 220. Constricting Loop's +12-18 Strength covers the rest. Without Steel Carapace you need much less: Nightwing's Veil (Spired Helm, -50% requirements) needs about 96 and Occultist 151. |
| Dexterity | None (Hiim's planner: 0). You don't use a shield in the endgame. pjiy's Hardcore starter is the exception: it puts 125 points into Dexterity for block with Visceratuant. |
| Vitality | Everything else (Hiim: 281 points at clvl 95; Odealo: 'put everything'). |
| Energy | None. Mana comes from gear (Occultist, Silkweave, the crafted amulet), Warmth and an Insight merc early on. Odealo: only Energy Shield players put points into Energy. |
04Leveling
Leveling plan
Frozen Orb does not level well on its own. It needs clvl 30, five cold prerequisites and about 80 points in Frozen Orb, its two synergies and Cold Mastery before it is strong. The community route is to level as fire and respec:
- philanthropy777's progression guide, linked on hiimpd2 as the Frozen Orb build guide, plays Meteor on Day 1 and moves into Frozen Orb in the endgame.
- Odealo's Combustion/Frozen Orb guide levels as Fire Bolt/Fire Ball first and adds Frozen Orb later.
So this build reuses our class leveling guide (Inferno -> Leaf -> Meteor, into the hiimpd2 S14 Meteor starter) unchanged up to the respec. The only build-specific part is when to respec and what to collect for it.
Switching to your main skill: Frozen Orb becomes the main skill at the respec (about clvl 70-75, Hell, after Baal). It can be learned at clvl 30 but needs its synergies and Cold Mastery to outdamage Meteor. No-respec alternative: the class guide's pure-cold route (Pxned's S14 Blizzard speedrun planner) already takes Ice Bolt, Ice Blast, Frost Nova, Glacial Spike and Blizzard, so Frozen Orb's prerequisites are done by 30. You can then take Frozen Orb at 30 and move points from Blizzard and Ice Blast via Akara. No Frozen Orb source shows this path, so treat it as untested.
Respec: One respec: Akara's free respec (once per difficulty after that difficulty's Den of Evil) or a Token of Absolution (Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction; in PD2 the essences drop from act bosses in Nightmare and Hell). Respec skills and stats.

- Act 2 Normal Tal Rune Rasha's Tombs: Dense XP. Drops: Low runes, bases.
Quests
- Radament's Lair (Act 2, must do): +1 skill point
- Lam Esen's Tome (Act 3, must do): +5 stat points
- The Blackened Temple (Gidbinn) (Act 3, recommended): Ormus gives a corrupted ring in PD2

- Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act 5, recommended): Runes (Normal: Ral Rune + Ort Rune + Tal Rune). Exactly Ancients' Pledge.
Level 31–70Nightmare (Nightmare -> Hell): stay Meteor, collect the cold core
Keep following the class guide: Meteor, Inferno and Fire Ball to 20, then Fire Mastery. Get Splendor and Smoke from the hiimpd2 starter kit, and an Act 2 Defiance merc with Insight. Meanwhile collect for the respec: a Glacial amulet (+3 Cold Skills; needs item level 60), Snowclash, Nightwing's Veil if affordable, Death's Fathom or The Oculus, and Medusa's Gaze. Also collect the four act-boss essences for a Token of Absolution if you used Akara's Hell respec elsewhere.Skill points- +13Meteor

Where to farm
- Hell Andariel / Corrupted Zones: philanthropy777's Day 1 Meteor farms Andariel and Corrupted Zones right after Hell Baal; hiimpd2 tags the Meteor starter for Chaos, early maps, key farming and Uber Tristram. Drops: Uniques, sets, Worldstone Shards.
Quests
- The Fallen Angel (Izual, Nightmare) (Act 4, must do): +2 skill points
- Prison of Ice (Anya, Nightmare) (Act 5, must do): +10 all res

Level 70–75Hell Respec at about clvl 70-75 (Hell, after Baal): into Frozen Orb
The class guide plans its respec point at levels 60-75+, after Hell Baal and before maps. At clvl 75 you have 86 points: enough for Frozen Orb, Frost Nova and Cold Mastery at 20, Ice Bolt at 18 and all utility points. Respec when you have about 78% FCR and at least the Glacial amulet or Death's Fathom; before that, Meteor with the starter kit kills faster. Use Akara's free Hell respec or a Token of Absolution. Respec stats too (Strength for gear, rest Vitality), since the Meteor starter has 85 points in Energy.Skill points- +20Frozen Orb

Level 76–95Endgame maps
Finish Ice Bolt, then put every point into Teleport (Hiim: 19 at clvl 95; Odealo: leftover points shrink the Teleport debuff). Upgrade toward the endgame gear: Steel Carapace (needs Strength), Occultist, Silkweave, a crafted Caster amulet and staff, cold grand charms.Skill points- +2Ice Bolt

Other ways to level
- Inferno -> Leaf -> Meteor (into the hiimpd2 S14 Meteor starter): JuxtAPoser's Zero 2 Hero levels exactly this way (Inferno, Leaf runeword, Meteor), and hiimpd2's S14 Meteor starter planner is where it ends. Leaf (Tir Rune + Ral Rune, clvl 19) gives +3 Fire Skills and +1-2 Inferno. Meteor gets +6% damage per level of Fire Ball, Blaze and Inferno (skills.txt), so maxing Inferno and Fire Ball feeds Meteor directly. Meteor's burning ground gets its synergy from Inferno since the S14 fix. In the hiimpd2 starter planner the final points at level 76 are Inferno 20, Fire Ball 20, Meteor 20, Fire Mastery 20, and 1 each in Fire Bolt, Warmth, Blaze, Fire Wall, Telekinesis, Teleport and Static Field. The phases below reach that total without a respec. On the main route you do not need to: the hiimpd2 Meteor starter is the end point. Community examples of respec timing: Thanock goes Fire Ball -> Blizzard around level 35; JuxtAPoser goes Meteor -> Blizzard after finishing Hell.
- Fire Bolt -> Fire Ball, respec around level 35: Thanock's PD2 guide levels with Fire Ball and does a full respec into Blizzard around level 35, using an Insight merc and Spirit (Sword/Any Shield). Kordesh's older S5 guide starts the same way (Fire Bolt 2-10, Warmth at 11, Telekinesis 17, Teleport 18). Pick this if you want a cold or lightning endgame and are fine with one Akara respec in Nightmare.
- Pure cold: Ice Bolt -> Ice Blast -> Blizzard: Pxned's S14 hiimpd2 planner 'Blizzard sorc (1 to Hell Baal 8-man speedrun)' levels as cold from level 1: Ice Bolt, Ice Blast and Blizzard to 20 by level 60, Lore, Stealth, Ancients' Pledge and crafted caster gear. Pick this if your endgame is Blizzard and you want no respec (see the Blizzard build guide).
- hiimpd2 S14 starters: Chain Lightning, Ice Barrage, Firewall: hiimpd2's S14 starter list has four Sorceress starters with the same gear kit (Spirit (Sword/Any Shield), Splendor, Lore, Smoke/Rite of Passage, Lenymo, Insight Defiance merc). Ice Barrage is tagged for Chaos, early maps and key farming; Chain Lightning for the Arcane Sanctuary; Firewall for Andariel. Pick these if you want a different element than fire for the first Hell runs.
Respecs
- Free respecs: Akara offers a free respec once per difficulty after the Den of Evil of that difficulty.
- Token of Absolution: Token of Absolution = Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction (cube). In PD2 the essences drop from act bosses in Nightmare and Hell.

You keep it through the respec. How to get: Tal Rune + Thul Rune + Ort Rune + Amn Rune in a 4-socket sword (clvl 25). A Crystal Sword can roll up to 6 sockets: use a low item-level base (Normal Act 1-2) or the Act 1 socket quest on a white base.

- AmuletGlacial Amulet+3 to all cold skills: Frozen Orb, Cold Mastery and the synergies all gain levels. Hiim's S14 Ice Barrage starter wears one. While you are still Meteor, the class guide's 'Volcanic' (+3 Fire Skills) amulet is the fire version. How to get: Magic drop or gambling at clvl 60+ (the prefix needs item level 60). Odealo's Combustion/Frozen Orb guide mislabels it as a 'Volcanic Amulet'; Volcanic is the fire prefix.

Charms
Hiim's planner fills the inventory with Hellfire Torch, Annihilus and Gheed's Fortune, eight '+1 Cold Skills' grand charms (prefix 'Chilling'), and small charms for life and resistances. Odealo says the same: cold skill grand charms are the best damage charms, because they also raise Cold Mastery and so your pierce. +3% cold damage large charms are 'never worth it'. Put life or FHR on the grand charms; life and resistances (or magic find/FHR) on the small charms.
- Grand charms: +1 to Cold Skills (prefix 'Chilling') - Hiim: 8 of them; Ideally with life (suffix 'of Vita', +36-45 life) or FHR (Odealo)
- Large charms: Not used: Odealo says +3% cold damage large charms are never worth it, and Hiim's planner has none.
- Small charms: Shimmering Small Charm (all resistances +3-5) - Hiim: 5 of them; Emerald / Amber Small Charm of Vita (+10-11 poison or lightning resistance, +16-20 life) - Hiim: 3 Emerald, 2 Amber; Life + FHR or magic find small charms (Odealo)
- Annihilus: +1 all skills, attributes, resistances (Hiim; Odealo).
- Hellfire Torch: A Sorceress torch: +Sorceress skills, attributes, resistances (Hiim; Odealo).
- Gheed's Fortune: Magic find and gold find (Hiim; Odealo lists all three unique charms).
Socket fillers
- weapon (crafted Archon Staff corrupted to 6 sockets): Rainbow Facet -- Hiim's planner: 6 cold Rainbow Facets, each +3-5% cold skill damage, -3-5% enemy cold resistance and +24-38 cold damage. Six of them give +18-30% cold damage and -18-30% enemy cold resistance (approximate). The Death and Level-Up versions have the same cold stats.
- helm/armor with sockets (after a socket corruption): Numbing jewel (+3-5% to cold skill damage (prefix 'Numbing', jewels; S14 new elemental damage jewel prefix), Life (suffix 'of Hope', +9-20) or FHR (suffix 'of Truth', 7%)) -- S14 added +2-5% elemental damage prefixes on jewels (patch notes). A Numbing jewel is a cheap filler where you have no cold facet. Our suggestion; Hiim's planner shows no other sockets.
- Hardcore magic find setup: Perfect Diamond -- pjiy's Hardcore starter puts a Perfect Diamond (all resistances) into a corrupted Visceratuant, a Perfect Ruby into Tarnhelm and a Perfect Topaz (magic find) into Skin of the Vipermagi.
06Mercenary
Which mercenary
Act 2 -- Defensive (Defiance)
Aura: Defiance. His weapon adds Meditation (Insight) early and Conviction (Infinity (Polearm/Spear)) in the endgame
Odealo's Frozen Orb guide picks the Act 2 Defiance merc: Insight first for mana, then Infinity (Polearm/Spear), whose Conviction lowers cold resistance and is the only common way to break cold immunes. Odealo's Combustion/Frozen Orb guide and Hiim's cold reference planner ('Ice Barrage (Skin of the Vipermagi)', auto-generated from S13 ladder data) also use an Act 2 Infinity (Polearm/Spear) merc. In PD2, Act 2 mercs only come with Defiance, Blessed Aim or Thorns; there is no Holy Freeze or Might Act 2 merc. Note that Hiim's own Frozen Orb planner uses a different merc (see the alternative). We keep the Act 2 merc as the main pick because Frozen Orb has no other answer to cold immunes.
Alternatives
- Act 3 Lightning (Holy Shock aura; casts Lightning and Static Field): Hiim's S14 'Frozen Orb' planner uses an Act 3 Iron Wolf of the Static Field type. His gear:
- Skyfall (a Sorceress orb with +3 Lightning Skills, 20% FCR and +2-3 Static Field)
- ethereal Exile in a Sacred Targe (Defiance aura 13-16)
- Flickering Flame in a Great Helm (Resist Fire aura)
- ethereal Innocence in a Lacquered Plate
- Occultist, Gore Rider and String of Ears
Per the PD2 wiki, Act 3 mercs can use shields and Sorceress orbs. This merc brings defensive auras and Static Field, but no cold-immunity breaker. Use him if you skip or reroll cold-immune content. S14 nerfed his Static Field: it now also lowers maximum life by 8%, but its targeting range dropped from 22 to 16, and the Sorceress Static Field went from 25% to 8% of current life.
- Act 1 Cold (Meditation aura): Not used by any Frozen Orb source. Mentioned only because other cold Sorceress planners use a Meditation rogue with Lower Resist procs (Pus Spitter, nerfed to +2 skills in S14) as a different immunity answer. Treat it as untested for Frozen Orb.

Boots- Mercenary WeaponInsightMeditation aura (level 12-17) fixes your mana while you level and right after the respec. Every hiimpd2 S14 starter (Meteor and Ice Barrage) gives the Act 2 Defiance merc Insight; Odealo's Frozen Orb guide uses it first too. How to get: Ral Rune + Tir Rune + Tal Rune + Sol Rune in a 4-socket polearm (clvl 27). A Voulge has exactly 4 max sockets, so the Act 1 socket quest or the cube recipe always gives 4.
- Mercenary HelmRare HelmFilled as a standard pick (no community source names a specific early merc helm): two resistances and a little life keep him alive until you can afford Vampire Gaze. How to get: Drops/vendors. Standard pick: no cited source names an item for this slot at this stage -- a common, stage-appropriate choice.
- Mercenary ArmorRare Breast PlateFilled as a standard pick until Shaftstop: three resistances and a little life. How to get: Drops/vendors. Standard pick: no cited source names an item for this slot at this stage -- a common, stage-appropriate choice.
- Mercenary BeltLenymoHiim's S14 starters give the merc a Lenymo too: all resistances +5 and mana regeneration. It is cheap and easy to find. How to get: Random drop (Sash unique, L7).
07Breakpoints
| Stat | Breakpoints | Aim for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCR (cast rate) | 071523355278117194 | 78% (low budget) -> 117% (high investment) per Odealo; 194% is out of reach for most | Sorceress slow spells (Frozen Orb, Chain Lightning). Teleport and Frost Nova use the normal table 0/9/20/37/63/105/200. PD2 changed Frozen Orb to the slow Sorceress frames when it removed the cooldown (wiki Breakpoints, Cold Spells). Per the vanilla frame counts for this table, 78% is 13 frames per cast and 117% is 12. Our tally of Hiim's planner: crafted staff 20 + 40, crafted amulet 10, Occultist 20, Constricting Loop 20 = 110% FCR. That is the 78% Frozen Orb breakpoint, and it is also above 105%, the 8-frame breakpoint for Teleport and Frost Nova. Example (approximate): S14 raised the body-armor FCR corruption from 10% to 20%. With it, the same gear reaches 130% and Frozen Orb's 117% breakpoint. Mid setup example: Death's Fathom 20 + Medusa's Gaze 30-40 + Skin of the Vipermagi 30 + Trang-Oul's Claws 20 + Constricting Loop 20 = 120-130%. |
| FHR (hit recovery) | 059142030426086142280 | 42% (Odealo: 'good enough for most content'); 60%+ in Hardcore | Sorceress. Hiim's planner gets 40% FHR from Steel Carapace only (the 30% breakpoint). One FHR small charm (5%) or FHR on a grand charm reaches 42%. Sandstorm Trek (20%) and Smoke/Stealth (20%) cover it earlier. |
| FRW (run/walk) | — | Teleport is your movement. Silkweave, Sandstorm Trek, Rite of Passage and Gore Rider give 30%. S14 rare boots can roll 40% FRW (suffix 'of Acceleration'). |
08Tips & Tricks
Tips
- Let the orb finish its flight: the 16 explosion bolts only deal damage when the orb reaches the end of its path, not when it hits a wall (PD2 wiki). Aim along corridors.
- Frozen Orb has no cooldown in PD2. FCR is damage: aim for 78%, then 117% (slow table). Teleport and Frost Nova still use the normal table, so 105% speeds those up too.
- Max Frost Nova and Ice Bolt even though you rarely cast Ice Bolt: each point is +4% Frozen Orb damage. Frost Nova is also your mop-up skill.
- +1 Cold Skills grand charms ('Chilling') beat +3% cold damage large charms because they also raise Cold Mastery's pierce (Odealo).
- Put leftover points into Teleport. PD2 applies a short spell-damage penalty after each Teleport that shrinks with Teleport level (Odealo; Hiim's planner has 19 points).
- Nightwing's Veil + Snowclash each give half freeze duration. Odealo says the two together make you immune to freeze.
- Keep 1 point in Shiver Armor: since S14 its retaliation damage gets +20% per Frost Nova level, so your maxed Frost Nova makes it hit hard.
- Watch for map modifiers that add cold resistance or cold immunity. Reroll them, or skip those packs.
- Use the weapon swap for Battle Orders (Hiim: Call to Arms + Lidless Wall) before tough packs and bosses.
- Steel Carapace needs 220 Strength. Count Constricting Loop's +12-18 before you spend stat points (Hiim: 204 points in Strength).
- Don't respec too early: with the starter kit, Meteor kills faster until you have the points for Frozen Orb, both synergies and Cold Mastery (class guide respec point: after Hell Baal).
- Corrupt your staff or chest for FCR or sockets with Worldstone Shards from Corrupted Zones (drop rate +50% in S14).
Where to farm
- T1-T3 maps (clvl 80+), open layouts first: The build's home. hiimpd2 benchmarks Frozen Orb on Pandemonium Citadel (4:30). Open, dense maps let every orb fly its full path.
- S14 new maps: The Poisoned Well (T1), The Descent from Mount Arreat (T2), The Fortress of Aranoch (T2): No immunities in their first season (S14 patch notes), so cold immunes are no issue.
- Corrupted Zones (Hell, rotating): Worldstone Shards (+50% in Corrupted Zones in S14) for the socket and FCR corruptions this build wants. Monster level 85.
- Hell Countess / Tower Cellar: Runes for Spirit (Sword/Any Shield), Splendor, Lore, Smoke and Insight before and right after the respec. Tower Cellar is area level 85 in Hell in PD2.
- Hell Cow Level and Chaos Sanctuary: Dense packs for experience between Hell Baal and clvl 80. General PD2 practice, no Frozen Orb-specific source.
Hardcore
Frozen Orb is one of the safer Hardcore mappers: everything you hit is chilled, you fight at range, and the build stacks Vitality (Odealo: 'very safe thanks to Freeze'). The S14 Hardcore example is pjiy's 'starter HC Mf Sorc' planner on hiimpd2 (Frozen Orb, clvl 70, HC tag). It plays defensively:
- Wizardspike: 75 all resistances, 50% FCR, corrupted with a socket.
- Visceratuant with block, 125 Dexterity for block.
- Bloodfist for 30% FHR and life.
- Two crafted rings: one with half freeze duration and resistances, the other with magic find, mana and fire resistance.
- 5 points in Energy Shield (after 1 each in Charged Bolt, Lightning and Chain Lightning).
- An Act 2 Defiance merc with Kelpie Snare (slows targets), Duress and Vampire Gaze.
General Hardcore rules for this build:
- Keep 75% resistances everywhere (Hell -100%).
- Avoid being frozen: Nightwing's Veil + Snowclash, or Rite of Passage early. S14 patch #2 stopped half freeze and cannot be frozen from rolling on the same item.
- Aim for 60%+ FHR.
- Skip maps with cold immunity or 'monsters deal extra damage' modifiers.
- Teleport out of anything you cannot chill.
The Steel Carapace + Vitality endgame from Hiim's planner is the safer late template. Pinnacle bosses have no hiimpd2 rating for Frozen Orb, so test at T0 on Softcore first.
09FAQ
About this build
Is Frozen Orb good in Season 14?
Yes. It is Top tier on hiimpd2's S14 solo list (benchmark: Pandemonium Citadel in 4:30, recorded in S12) and Decent on the group list. Odealo's S14 tier list (2026-09-28, before launch) has it in S tier and the Combustion/Frozen Orb hybrid in A tier. It is not rated on hiimpd2's bossing list.
Why does Frozen Orb need different FCR breakpoints?
PD2 removed Frozen Orb's cooldown and moved it to the 'slow' Sorceress cast frames (0/7/15/23/35/52/78/117/194), the same as Chain Lightning (wiki Breakpoints). Odealo's targets: 78% on a budget, 117% with heavy investment. Teleport and Frost Nova still use the normal table, so 105% is also worth hitting.
Why max Ice Bolt and Frost Nova?
They are Frozen Orb's only synergies: +4% damage per hard point each (S14 Skills.txt), +160% with both at 20. Frost Nova is also a strong mop-up nova (S14: 8% per Ice Bolt and Shiver Armor point). Hiim's planner maxes both.
How do I deal with cold immunes?
Infinity (Polearm/Spear) on an Act 2 merc (Conviction breaks many, not all, cold immunes at half effectiveness), Lower Resist procs from Medusa's Gaze or Mang Song's Lesson, or skipping/rerolling. Cold Mastery and -cold resistance gear only work once the immunity is broken. Odealo admits some immunes can't be broken at all.
Which mercenary should I use, Act 2 Infinity (Polearm/Spear) or Hiim's Act 3?
Act 2 Defiance with Insight, then Infinity (Polearm/Spear), is the Odealo pick and the only one that breaks cold immunes. Hiim's own planner uses an Act 3 Static Field Iron Wolf with Skyfall, Exile, Flickering Flame and Innocence: more defensive auras, no immunity breaker. Pick the Act 3 setup only if you skip cold immunes anyway.
Does the Sorceress leveling guide work for this build?
Yes. The community route is fire first (philanthropy777: Meteor on Day 1, Frozen Orb in the endgame; Odealo's hybrid guide: fire first, Frozen Orb later), which is exactly our class guide (Inferno -> Leaf -> Meteor). Its planned respec point (after Hell Baal, clvl 60-75+) fits. Frozen Orb is already listed there as an endgame target.
When exactly should I respec?
Around clvl 70-75 in Hell after Baal, once you have about 78% FCR and some cold gear (a Glacial amulet or Death's Fathom). At 75 you have 86 points: Frozen Orb, Frost Nova and Cold Mastery maxed, Ice Bolt 18. Earlier, Meteor with the starter kit clears faster. This timing is our recommendation; the sources only say 'after Hell / when immunities become a problem'.
Can I level as cold and skip the respec?
Possibly: the class guide's pure-cold route (Pxned's S14 Blizzard speedrun planner) takes all of Frozen Orb's prerequisites, so you can add Frozen Orb at clvl 30. No Frozen Orb source shows this path, so treat it as untested.
Is Frozen Orb good for bossing and ubers?
Unknown in the S14 tier lists: hiimpd2's bossing list does not rate Frozen Orb. Blizzard is the rated cold Sorceress there. Odealo (S13 era) lists 'high damage against bosses' as a pro: an orb exploding on a large target can hit it almost 20 times. Boss cold resistances (hiimpd2 T0 guide): Diablo Clone 30%, Lucion 30%, Rathma 50%. Test at T0 first.
Frozen Orb or Blizzard?
Frozen Orb is the faster mapper (hiimpd2 solo: Top vs Good). Blizzard is safer, cheaper and the cold Sorceress that hiimpd2 rates for pinnacle bosses. Both share Cold Mastery, the cold gear and the cold-immune problem.
Energy Shield or Vitality?
Vitality: Hiim's planner and Odealo put everything into Vitality and skip Energy Shield (not enough points to max it alongside the damage skills). pjiy's Hardcore starter adds 5 points of Energy Shield as a safety layer.
What about the Combustion/Frozen Orb hybrid?
That is a different, fire-first build (Odealo, A tier): maxed Combustion, Fire Ball, Fire Bolt and Fire Mastery, with Frozen Orb maxed as the cold backup and only 1 point in Cold Mastery. It trades peak cold damage for coverage of both immunity types.
Why does Hiim put 19 points into Teleport?
PD2 reduces your spell damage briefly after a Teleport, and the penalty shrinks with Teleport level. Odealo recommends putting every leftover point into Teleport for this reason. In Hiim's planner Teleport takes every point after the four core skills.
Leveling questions
Why Inferno/Meteor and not Fire Ball?
Both are community routes. Inferno -> Meteor (JuxtAPoser) ends in hiimpd2's S14 Meteor starter without a respec. Fire Ball leveling (Thanock) is just as fast in Normal but usually means a respec around 35.
When should I get Teleport?
At 18, one point.
Which merc while leveling?
Any Act 1 Rogue until Act 2, then an Act 2 Defiance Desert Guard with Insight; that is the merc in every hiimpd2 S14 Sorceress starter.
Do I need Energy Shield while leveling?
No. It needs Teleport and Chain Lightning first in PD2, and the hiimpd2 Meteor starter does not take it.
How do I deal with fire immunes?
Let the Insight/Infinity (Polearm/Spear) merc kill them or teleport past. Infinity's Conviction can break immunities (at half effectiveness against immune monsters).
What is the starter gear kit?
hiimpd2 S14 starters: Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) (Crystal Sword), Splendor (Bone Shield), Lore, Smoke, Lenymo, a +skills amulet and an Insight merc.
When do I respec?
Only when your endgame gear is ready. Akara is free once per difficulty; Thanock respecs at ~35, JuxtAPoser after Hell.
Where do maps start?
At level 80 after killing the Hell Ancients; Hell Anya gives your first 3 tier-1 maps.
General PD2 questions
How do I respec: Akara or a Token of Absolution?
Akara: after you finish Den of Evil, Akara offers one free full respec (skills and stats) per difficulty. Use the Normal one right after switching from your leveling build. Respeccing early is fine because you get more chances later.
Token of Absolution: cube one of each of the four essences:
- Twisted Essence of Suffering (Andariel ~16%, Duriel ~21%)
- Charged Essence of Hatred (Mephisto ~8.3%)
- Burning Essence of Terror (Diablo ~8.3%)
- Festering Essence of Destruction (Baal ~8.3%)
In PD2 the essences drop in Nightmare and Hell at the same rates, and they stack in the materials tab. Right-click the token to reset all skill and stat points. Tokens are also easy to buy from other players, so a respec is rarely a big deal. Experiment with builds freely.
Which mercenary should I hire?
PD2 reworked every merc. They have the same stats whichever difficulty you hire them in, and they all wear helm, armor, gloves, boots and belt. The PD2 merc table:
- Act 1 Rogue: Fire (Vigor aura), Cold (Meditation), Physical (Slow Movement). Bows and crossbows.
- Act 2 Desert Guard: Defensive (Defiance), Offensive (Blessed Aim), Combat (Thorns). Polearms, spears and javelins; one-handed weapons do double damage. There is no Might, Prayer or Holy Freeze Act 2 merc in PD2.
- Act 3 Iron Wolf: Fire (Cleansing), Cold (Prayer), Lightning (Holy Shock plus Static Field, which Season 14 reduced to 8% life).
- Act 4 Ascendant (new): Dark (casts Amplify Damage), Light (Sanctuary). Staves.
- Act 5 Barbarian: Combat (Might), Warcries (Battle Orders plus Battle Cry).
The usual default is an Act 2 Defiance merc in Insight (mana, and survives well). Physical builds love Might or Battle Orders, and casters often like Act 3 Cold for Prayer. Season 14 mercs get full XP from your kills, so they keep up easily.
What are breakpoints and which ones matter?
Diablo 2 animations run in whole frames, so Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR), Faster Block Rate and Increased Attack Speed only help once you reach the next threshold. Anything between thresholds is wasted. PD2 uses the vanilla FCR tables, for example:
- Sorceress FCR: 0/9/20/37/63/105/200. Frozen Orb and Chain Lightning use a slower table, 0/7/15/23/35/52/78/117/194.
- Paladin and Necromancer FCR: 0/9/18/30/48/75/125.
For most casters, 105% (Sorceress) or 75% (Paladin and Necromancer) is the main target. Get one or two FHR breakpoints for survival, such as 42-60% on a Sorceress. PD2 attack mechanics differ from vanilla: Whirlwind ignores IAS and hits at fixed intervals, Berserk uses Frenzy breakpoints, and item IAS has diminishing returns. Use the PD2 wiki breakpoint tables or an S14-aware planner for your class and weapon. Check a breakpoint before paying a lot for 5% more FCR.
Where do I get Stealth early, and how do I farm Tal Rune and Eth Rune?
Stealth is Tal Rune + Eth Rune in a 2-socket body armor and needs clvl 17. It gives 20% FCR, 20% FHR, 10% faster run/walk, +6 Dexterity and 3 magic damage reduction, which makes it the standard leveling armor for nearly every class.
- Base: any 2-socket body armor. Quilted Armor, Leather Armor and Hard Leather Armor (max 2 sockets) are cheap and light. Check Charsi and later vendors for socketed armor, or keep grey 2-socket drops from Act 1-2.
- Eth Rune: a common drop in Normal Act 1-2 (Eth Rune needs clvl 15). You can also cube 3 Nef Rune into 1 Eth Rune.
- Tal Rune: farm the Countess in the Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh, Act 1). Her rune table goes up to Ral Rune in Normal, so Tal Rune comes up regularly. Or cube 3 Ith Rune into 1 Tal Rune.
Save spare Tals: they also go into Ancients' Pledge, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) and Insight. With Season 14's stash rework, runes stack in their own tab and upgrades need no key.
How does corruption with Worldstone Shards work?
Put an item and a Worldstone Shard in the cube and transmute. The result depends on the item:
- Normal (white/grey) items without sockets: 50% they gain sockets (up to the base maximum), 50% they become a random rare.
- Magic, rare, set or unique items that can have sockets (helm, chest, shield, weapon, quiver): 25% sockets (1-3 on armor, 2-4 on one-handed weapons, 3-6 on two-handed), 50% a corruption modifier, 25% "brick" into a random rare of the same type.
- Items that cannot have sockets (gloves, boots, belt, ring, amulet): 75% a corruption modifier, 25% brick.
Modifiers come in low, mid and high rarity tiers. High-rarity rolls are things like +1 all skills or 20% FCR on chests, +1 all skills on weapons, helms and shields, or +15% FRW on boots. A corrupted item can never be corrupted again, but most other recipes still work on it, including Puzzleboxes for sockets afterwards. Runewords count as regular socketed items and can't be corrupted. Make the base corrupt first.
What should I corrupt, and in which order?
Corrupt items where a 25% brick doesn't hurt much and a good roll is worth a lot:
- Runeword bases before you socket them. A white 0-socket base has a 50% chance to get max sockets, so it is the cheap way to make Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) shields, Insight polearms or 4-socket armor. A bricked white base costs almost nothing.
- Duplicate uniques or sets, or cheap ones you have spares of. Aim for sockets or high-rarity modifiers.
- Rings, amulets, gloves, boots and belts that are good but replaceable: 75% to gain a modifier.
- Annihilus uses the special Tainted Worldstone Shard from Rathma, not a normal shard.
For socketable uniques, the community advice is to corrupt first and Puzzlebox second. Shards are cheaper than Puzzleboxes, and boxing first doesn't lower the 25% brick chance, so you'd risk losing the box. Never corrupt your only copy of a build-defining item unless you can afford to lose it.
How do I reroll grand charms (or any magic item)?
Cube a magic item + 3 perfect gems (any type) to get a new magic item of the same base with the same item level and fresh random affixes. This is how players hunt skillers: grand charms with +1 to a class skill tab, ideally with life or faster hit recovery too. You can also reroll small and large charms or magic jewels. Notes:
- The item level never drops, so a high-ilvl grand charm (for example from Hell or maps) can be rerolled endlessly. A low-ilvl one can't roll high-tier affixes no matter how often you try.
- The recipe doesn't work on corrupted items or maps.
- Perfect gems drop only in Hell, but 3 flawless gems cube into a perfect (no key in Season 14), and chipped gems slowly upgrade too.
- Rares use a different recipe: rare + 3 Perfect Skulls makes a new rare, but at a lower item level (0.4 x clvl + 0.4 x ilvl).
How do maps work, and what do I need to open one?
Maps are PD2's endgame zones. To open one you need a level 80+ character who has killed the Hell Ancients. Right-click the map in your inventory while in Harrogath in Hell. Only one map or uber zone can be opened per game. The tiers:
- Tier 1: area level 87
- Tier 2: area level 88
- Tier 3: area level 89
- Tier 4 (dungeons): area level 92, made from a T3 map with a Horadrim Scarab and meant for strong groups
Your first maps come from Anya's Hell reward, rare drops in Hell and Nightmare Act 5, and corrupted zones. After that, maps mostly drop inside maps, with a chance of higher-tier maps. Each map has affixes that add density, experience and magic/gold find, plus monster modifiers. Before opening a map, check its immunities against your build. Map events (11% on normal, 22% magic, 33% rare maps) add bonus content such as the Treasure Fallen, the Dark Wanderer (extra Worldstone Shards) or Shadow of Mendeln (Splinter of the Void).
10Season 14 changes
S13 -> S14 changes that matter for Frozen Orb (PD2 wiki Patch Notes and hiimpd2's Season 14 page; calculations are approximate):
- Frozen Orb, Ice Bolt, Cold Mastery and Teleport: no balance changes (Teleport only got a better tooltip). hiimpd2 kept Frozen Orb at Top solo and did not list it among the S14 movers.
- Frost Nova synergies 7% -> 8% (from Ice Bolt and Shiver Armor). Frozen Orb's own synergy from Frost Nova stays at 4%. Your maxed Frost Nova as a mop-up skill gets stronger: with Ice Bolt 20 + Shiver Armor 1 it gets +168% instead of +147%, about 8% more damage (268/247).
- Shiver Armor's synergy changed from Cold Enchant to Frost Nova (+20% per level). In S13, Hiim's 1 point of Cold Enchant gave +20%. With Frost Nova at 20 it now gets +400%, so the retaliation bolts hit about 4x as hard (500/120) for the same single point.
- Sorceress mana per level +2 -> +3, life per level +1 -> +1.25. At clvl 95 that is +94 mana and about +24 life over S13.
- Static Field 25% -> 8% of current life; procs limited to range 16. This affects Hiim's Act 3 Static Field merc, whose Static Field also now reduces maximum life by 8% but reaches only 16 yards (was 22). Example: three casts on a full-life boss used to take it to about 42% life (0.75^3), now about 78% (0.92^3).
- Corruptions: the body-armor FCR corruption went from 10% to 20% (now tier 3). Example: Hiim's planner at about 110% FCR plus a 20% FCR Steel Carapace = 130%, which reaches Frozen Orb's 117% breakpoint (12 frames instead of 13). Replenish life corruptions on gloves, boots and belts were replaced by half freeze duration.
- Items: 'Glacial' (+3 Cold Skills) can now spawn on dropped rare staves and orbs. New +2-5% elemental damage jewel prefixes (cold: 'Numbing' +3-5%). The Ohm Rune rune in armor/helm/shield gives +5% max cold resistance (was +4%).
- Worldstone Shards +50% in Corrupted Zones, and mercenaries now get full experience from your kills.
- Unchanged: Nightwing's Veil, Snowclash, Death's Fathom, Medusa's Gaze, Occultist, Steel Carapace, Silkweave and Infinity (Polearm/Spear) have no S14 patch-note lines.
