01Overview
Season 14 rating
hiimpd2 S14 solo: Mid; S14 starter list; bossing Vision of Terror T0 Easy / T2 Moderate; Odealo B (2026-09-28)
An honest summary of the community ratings:
- League start: strong. hiimpd2's S14 starter list includes Holy Bolt / FOH with the tags Chaos, Early Map, Key Farming and Uber Tristram. It needs no expensive item to work, because magic damage is resisted by very few monsters.
- Bossing: good. hiimpd2's S14 bossing list rates Holy Bolt Easy at T0 and Moderate at T2 for Vision of Terror (Diablo Clone), based on TDL's S12 T0 kill video. It is not rated for Voidstone (Rathma) or Shadow of Hatred (Lucion).
- Mapping: Mid. hiimpd2's S14 solo tier list puts Holy Bolt / FOH in Mid (below Top, Good and Decent) with no recorded best clear yet. Odealo's pre-launch S14 tier list (2026-09-28) puts Holy Bolt in B and says the S14 Fist of the Heavens change 'should noticeably improve' pack clearing, but that the build 'still needs to prove' itself against the stronger mappers.
This guide follows philanthropy777's four S14 planners linked from hiimpd2 (Day 1, Day 2-5 Naj's, Day 2-5 Max Block, Endgame), which use Fist of the Heavens as the main skill. Odealo's Holy Bolt guide (S13, May 2026) is used for the Holy Bolt-main variant and leveling. Pick this build to start a season or farm keys, Chaos Sanctuary and Diablo Clone, not to top map-speed charts.
Summary
The Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens Paladin (FoH Paladin) is a magic-damage caster built on four Combat Skills that all boost each other: Holy Bolt, Holy Light, Fist of the Heavens and Holy Nova. You stand at range, cast Fist of the Heavens on a monster and let its holy bolts fly out to every enemy around it, and use Holy Bolt as a piercing line attack and Holy Nova as a short-cooldown burst.
PD2 is not vanilla here. In vanilla Diablo 2, Holy Bolt only damages undead and Fist of the Heavens' bolts only hurt undead and demons. In PD2 both damage every monster type:
- Holy Bolt: 'A bolt of divine energy that damages enemies or heals allies. Fires an additional holy bolt at levels 15 and 25' (PD2 wiki). Since PD2 Season 1 the bolts pierce all allies and enemies, healing allies and damaging enemies. Our S14 data agrees: the holybolt missile has no undead-only filter and no 'die on hit' flag.
- Fist of the Heavens: lightning strikes the target, then holy bolts fly from the target to each nearby enemy (up to 50). They have damaged all creature types since PD2 Season 2. They pierce, but unlike Holy Bolt they do not heal.
- S14 buff: FoH's holy bolts now damage every enemy they pierce, not just the monster each bolt was aimed at. A bug that let only 4 of the bolts deal damage was fixed. A 3-frame next-hit delay stops one bolt from hitting the same monster repeatedly. hiimpd2 calls this a 'big buff'.
Magic damage is the build's biggest strength: very few monsters resist it, so you rarely meet an immune pack, and the damage stays high even on cheap starter gear. The weak points are magic immunes (rare, but S14 Kyovoshad maps now have them), modest area coverage in open maps compared with Top-tier mappers, and a mana-hungry early game. Holy Bolt also heals your mercenary when it passes through him, which keeps a melee merc alive on a budget.
Who it is for: players who want a safe, cheap season starter that kills bosses and farms keys, Chaos Sanctuary and Uber Tristram, and later Diablo Clone. If your only goal is the fastest possible map clear, hiimpd2 rates other builds higher.
What works
- Magic damage: almost nothing resists it, so cheap starter gear already kills well
- On hiimpd2's S14 starter list (Chaos, Early Map, Key Farming, Uber Tristram)
- S14 buff: Fist of the Heavens' holy bolts now hit every monster they pass through
- Strong boss damage: hiimpd2 rates it Easy for T0 Diablo Clone
- Ranged and safe; Holy Bolt heals your merc, Holy Shield gives high block
- Fist of the Heavens has no cooldown in PD2 (S14 data) and locks on to a target, so you do not have to aim it
What to plan around
- Mid tier for solo mapping on hiimpd2 (below Top, Good and Decent)
- Magic immunes are rare but very hard to break (Sanctuary is the only magic-resistance reduction)
- Holy Bolt only fires in a line; open maps need more casts than a true area build
- Mana-hungry early; you need FCR, mana after kill and an Insight merc
- Holy Nova has a 4-second cooldown, so it is a burst, not a spam skill
- Leveling is awkward: Odealo finds Normal easier with Holy Fire melee, so you respec later than a Hammerdin
Playstyle
philanthropy777's S14 planners mark Fist of the Heavens as the main skill: cast it on any monster in a pack, and its bolts spread to everything nearby. Holy Bolt (3 bolts at level 25) is your piercing line attack for corridors, single targets and for healing your merc. Holy Nova (4-second cooldown) adds a burst around you. All four skills share synergies, so every point in one makes the others stronger. Mobility comes from Charge and Joust early and from Blink charges (Enigma or Naj's Puzzler) later.
Rotation
- Keep Holy Shield up (it lasts several minutes) and run your aura: Sanctuary on the Day 1 planner (lowers enemy magic resistance), Redemption on the endgame planner (life and mana from corpses)
- Move with Charge, Joust (teleports you to an enemy) or Blink charges
- Cast Fist of the Heavens on a monster in the middle of the pack; the bolts seek out every nearby enemy and now damage all monsters they pass through
- Cast Holy Nova when the pack is around you (4-second cooldown)
- Use Holy Bolt down corridors, on bosses (all bolts can hit the same target) and through your merc to heal him
- Move on as soon as the pack is low; FoH needs a target, so cast it on the next visible monster
Positioning: Fist of the Heavens needs a target in line of sight and searches out enemies near that target, so cast it from medium range into the middle of the pack. Holy Bolt fires in a straight line: line up monsters, and put your merc between you and the pack so the bolts heal him on the way (Odealo). With a shield and Holy Shield you can block a lot (philanthropy777's Max Block planner), but you still lose to big melee packs if you stand in them without FHR.
Bossing: Bosses are where this build shines. Holy Bolt fires 3 bolts at level 25 and all of them can hit the same target (Odealo). Fist of the Heavens adds its lightning hit plus bolts, and Holy Nova adds a burst every 4 seconds. TDL's S12 Diablo Clone kill used the full Naj's set (Blink charges for repositioning), reached the 125% FCR breakpoint and about 3k Holy Bolt damage, and swapped to Lava Gout and Waterwalk with Vigor to move around the arena. hiimpd2 rates Holy Bolt Easy for T0 and Moderate for T2 Diablo Clone; its recommended resistances are 90% fire and 25% PDR at T0 (50% PDR at T2).
Mapping: Expect mid-tier speed (hiimpd2 S14: Mid). The S14 change makes FoH much better in dense maps, because each bolt now damages every monster on its path, not just its target. Open maps with scattered packs are still slow, because you need a target for FoH and Holy Bolt only covers a line. Use mana after kill (crafted Caster gloves, MPK jewels in the endgame planner) and reroll maps with physical-as-extra-magic monster modifiers or magic-immune packs if you lack the gear for them.
02Skills
Level 30 · 33 skill points
- Holy Bolt 20
- Fist of the Heavens 6
- Blessed Hammer 1
- Charge 1
- Holy Light 1
- Holy Nova 1
- Holy Shield 1
- Holy Sword 1
- Smite 1
Skill order
- Leveling: Holy Fire melee (class leveling guide), then respec around clvl 30
- Respec: max Holy Bolt; 1 point each in Holy Light, Blessed Hammer, Smite, Charge, Holy Shield, Holy Sword; the rest into Fist of the Heavens
- Fist of the Heavens to 20 (one point per level, it caps at clvl 43)
- Holy Nova to 20 from clvl 30
- Holy Light to 20 last (philanthropy777's Day 1 planner still has it at 17 at clvl 80)
- 1 point each: Joust line (Zeal, Sacrifice, Vengeance, Joust) and Sanctuary line (Might, Holy Fire, Thorns, Holy Freeze, Sanctuary)
- Endgame: drop the Sanctuary line when your merc carries Azurewrath; take Prayer, Defiance, Vigor, Redemption; spare points into Holy Shield
Synergies
All four main skills are Combat Skills and synergize with each other (S14 Skills.txt and PD2 wiki):
- Holy Bolt gets +11% damage per hard point in Holy Light, Fist of the Heavens and Holy Nova. Prayer adds +5% healing.
- Fist of the Heavens gets +11% per hard point in Holy Bolt, Holy Light and Holy Nova. That applies to both its lightning strike and its holy bolts.
- Holy Nova gets +15% per hard point in Fist of the Heavens and Holy Bolt (not from Holy Light).
- Holy Light gets +10% per hard point in Holy Bolt and Fist of the Heavens. It is mostly a synergy here, plus an area heal for your merc.
With Holy Bolt, Holy Light and Holy Nova at 20, Fist of the Heavens' bolts get +660% damage. Example (approximate): at skill level 35 (20 hard points + 15 from gear) one FoH bolt deals 357-393 base magic damage (wiki table) x 7.6 = about 2,700-3,000 per hit, before +% magic skill damage. A level 35 Holy Bolt deals 425-488 x 7.6 = about 3,200-3,700 per bolt, and you fire three.
Prerequisites: Fist of the Heavens needs Blessed Hammer, which needs Holy Light, which needs Holy Bolt. Holy Nova (clvl 30) needs Fist of the Heavens and Holy Sword, which needs Holy Shield, Charge and Smite. Utility from philanthropy777's planners: Joust (teleport-to-enemy mobility; needs Zeal, Sacrifice and Vengeance), Holy Shield (block), Sanctuary (Day 1: lowers enemy magic resistance; needs Might, Holy Fire, Thorns and Holy Freeze) and, in the endgame, Redemption (needs Prayer, Defiance and Vigor).
About these skill plans
- Leveling respec (level 30): 33 points = 29 from levels + 4 Normal quest points (Den of Evil, Radament, Izual). This is the layout right after the respec from Holy Fire (see Leveling). Holy Bolt is maxed first because it is your main skill until FoH has points; with +3 or more from gear (Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) sword and shield, Lore, a 'Lion/Hawk Branded' amulet) it reaches level 25 and fires 3 bolts, the moment Odealo recommends for the respec. Charge and Holy Shield are on the way to Holy Nova and are the mobility and block skills Odealo asks for. If you also did the Nightmare Den of Evil, put the spare point into Fist of the Heavens. This exact split is our arithmetic inside Odealo's priorities.
- Early endgame (level 75): 86 points = 74 + 12 quest points. This is philanthropy777's S14 Day 1 planner (clvl 80, 91 points) minus the last 5 Holy Light points: Holy Bolt, Fist of the Heavens and Holy Nova at 20, Holy Light last, 1 point each in Joust (and its prerequisites Zeal, Sacrifice, Vengeance) and in Sanctuary (and Might, Holy Fire, Thorns, Holy Freeze). Sanctuary is the only skill that lowers enemy magic resistance (wiki: -5% at level 1, -1% per 2 levels); your +skills raise it.
- Endgame (philanthropy777's planner) (level 95): 106 points = 94 + 12, copied from philanthropy777's S14 'END GAME' planner. The four damage skills are maxed, Holy Shield gets 14 points for block chance, and the Sanctuary line is dropped because the Act 3 merc's Azurewrath provides a Sanctuary aura. Redemption (via Prayer, Defiance, Vigor) is the new aura for life and mana. Day 2-5 variants: the Naj's planner (clvl 85) puts 8 points into Joust (shorter cooldown) instead of Holy Shield; the Max Block planner (clvl 86) has Joust 5 and takes the Prayer/Defiance/Vigor/Redemption line.
Dealing with immunities
Magic immunes are rare, but they exist and are hard to break:
- S14 data: in Hell some monsters have 100% magic resistance, for example Unravelers/Horadrim Ancients and Plague Bearers. In maps, magic immunes are capped at 105% (S13 patch notes), and S14 gave the T3 map Kyovoshad magic immunes.
- Sanctuary is the only skill that lowers enemy magic resistance (wiki: -5% at level 1, -1% per 2 levels). Take it yourself (Day 1 planner, 1 point plus your +skills), use the Act 4 Light Ascendant (Day 2-5 planners) or give your merc Azurewrath (endgame planner, aura level 10-12) or Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) (Odealo, level 17-20). Resistance reduction works at 1/2 effectiveness on immunes in PD2, so it breaks 100-105% only with a strong Sanctuary.
- Fist of the Heavens' lightning strike is lightning damage, so it still hurts magic immunes that are not also lightning immune; the merc's damage (Static Field, physical) finishes them.
- If all else fails, skip the pack or reroll maps whose modifiers add magic resistance or physical-as-extra-magic damage.
03Stats
Strength for gear, dexterity for max block if you use a shield, the rest into Vitality, no Energy.
| Attribute | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Strength | Enough for your gear. philanthropy777's planners add only 12-38 points (Paladin base strength is 25). Enigma adds strength per level; Herald of Zakarum needs 89, Divine Scepter (Hand of Blessed Light) 103. |
| Dexterity | On a shield build, dexterity raises block chance: the Day 1 and Max Block planners add about 150 dexterity for maximum block with Holy Shield. Naj's set uses a two-handed staff and adds only 2 dexterity. The endgame planner adds 84 because Herald of Zakarum, Holy Shield (14 points) and a dexterity circlet already give a lot of block. |
| Vitality | Everything else (Day 1: +249, Naj's: +414, Endgame: +363). Odealo: 'Vitality: invest all'. |
| Energy | None in any planner or in Odealo's guide. Mana comes from Insight's Meditation on the merc, mana after kill, Redemption and gear. S14 raised Paladin mana per level from 1.5 to 2. |
04Leveling
Leveling plan
This build levels with the Paladin leveling guide's Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens route (shown below as this build's leveling timeline). It shares the class guide's Holy Fire melee opening, but skips the clvl 19 respec into Blessed Hammer: you keep Holy Fire (+1 Zeal) through Normal. Odealo's Holy Bolt guide says Normal is easier with a melee attack plus an elemental aura, and that you should respec 'once you can ensure level 25 on the Holy Bolt' (3 bolts). With Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) sword and shield, Lore and a 'Hawk Branded' amulet that happens around clvl 30, so the route respecs at clvl 30 with the Nightmare Akara respec (or with the Normal one if you saved it). After the respec, Holy Bolt carries you until Fist of the Heavens has points; then FoH becomes the main skill as in philanthropy777's planners. philanthropy777's video starts 'after killing Hell Baal' and gives no leveling route.
Switching to your main skill: Holy Bolt becomes your attack at the clvl 30 respec; Fist of the Heavens takes over as the main pack skill once it has about 10+ points (clvl 35-40), as in philanthropy777's planners (main skill: Fist of the Heavens).
Respec: Akara gives one free respec per difficulty after Den of Evil; use the Nightmare one at clvl 30 (or save the Normal one until then). Later changes (e.g. dropping the Sanctuary line in the endgame) use a Token of Absolution: Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction, which drop from act bosses in Nightmare and Hell.

Level 1–12Normal Act 1-2 Normal
Maxroll's opening, adapted to PD2: Might first, one point in Zeal (clvl 1 in PD2; Maxroll takes Sacrifice here because vanilla Sacrifice is a level 1 skill), then Resist Fire until Holy Fire unlocks at 6, and Holy Fire every level after that. Resist Fire is Holy Fire's synergy (+16% per level in the S14 data). Holy Fire hits every monster in its radius once per second, so stand inside packs. This opening is identical to the main route; the difference comes later: this route keeps Holy Fire through all of Normal and respecs into Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens around clvl 30.Skill points- +1Might

Skills
- Level 2: Might +1 -- Aura for early melee; prerequisite for Holy Fire.
- Level 3: Zeal +1 -- PD2: Zeal is clvl 1 and hits up to 3 adjacent targets. One point is enough.
- Level Den of Evil, 4-5: Resist Fire +3 -- Holy Fire synergy, exactly as Maxroll.
- Level 6-12: Holy Fire +7 -- One point every level (clvl 12 caps it at 7). Maxroll spends 10-12 on Smite/Charge/Zeal; on this route every point is refunded at the clvl 30 respec anyway.
Stats
Strength/Dexterity only for weapon and shield requirements; everything else into Vitality.Mercenary
Act 1 Fire Rogue (Vigor aura): Free from Blood Raven. In PD2 the Fire Rogue's Vigor aura speeds up your movement, and her fire arrows thin out packs. Gear her with any bow plus armor/helm drops.Where to farm
- Act 1 Normal Countess (Forgotten Tower level 5): Guaranteed rune drops: El Rune, Eld Rune, Tir Rune, Nef Rune, Eth Rune, Ith Rune for Steel, Nadir, Malice and Stealth. Drops: Low runes
- Tristram and the Moo Moo Farm later: Fast experience and drops; just clear on the way. Drops: Gold, low runes, magic items
Quests
- Den of Evil (Act 1, must do): +1 skill point and Akara's free respec for this difficulty. Clear it as soon as you reach the Blood Moor. Keep the respec unused; you need it at the end of Normal.
- Sisters' Burial Grounds (Blood Raven) (Act 1, must do): Free Rogue mercenary. Hire a Fire Rogue: in PD2 she carries a Vigor aura (run speed) and fire arrows.
- Tools of the Trade (Charsi) (Act 1, recommended): Imbue one normal item into a rare. Imbue a Scepter or War Scepter for a chance at Paladin skills, or a helm/armor. Saving it for later is fine.
- Sisters to the Slaughter (Andariel) (Act 1, must do): Act 2 access. Bring antidote potions or poison resistance.
Tips
- Stand in the middle of packs: Holy Fire only hits monsters inside its radius, so the more enemies around you, the faster you kill.
- Zeal costs very little mana and Holy Fire none; ignore Energy.
- Pick up every Paladin shield (Targe, Rondache). They roll innate resistances and can hold up to 4 sockets for Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) later.
- Mistake: Spending the Den of Evil respec early. Save the Normal respec: this route can use it at clvl 30 instead of (or in addition to) the Nightmare one.
- Mistake: Putting more than one point in Zeal: its target count does not increase, and all these points are refunded at the respec anyway.
Level 13–18Normal Act 2-3 Normal
Keep pumping Holy Fire (Maxroll: Holy Fire every level 13-19, Radament's book into Resist Fire). Make Stealth at 17. Unlike the main route there is NO respec at clvl 19: Odealo's Holy Bolt guide says Normal is easier with a melee attack plus an elemental aura, and that you should respec only 'once you can ensure level 25 on the Holy Bolt'. Act 2 Defensive Desert Guard (Defiance aura): PD2 Act 2 mercs are Defensive = Defiance, Offensive = Blessed Aim, Combat = Thorns. There is NO Might or Holy Freeze Act 2 merc in PD2 (Might is the Act 5 Barbarian). Defiance raises your and the merc's defense, which helps a melee Paladin most. Offensive (Blessed Aim) is fine if you miss a lot. Note that the merc's Blessed Aim aura does NOT count as a Hammer synergy: synergies only read your own hard points.Where to farm
Quests
- Radament's Lair (Act 2, must do): Book of Skill (+1 skill point). Sewers below Lut Gholein.
- The Golden Bird (Act 3, recommended): Potion of Life (+20 life). Picks itself up as you go through Act 3.
- Lam Esen's Tome (Act 3, must do): +5 stat points. Ruined Temple in the Kurast Bazaar.
Tips
- Holy Fire scales only with Holy Fire and its synergies (Resist Fire, Salvation, Blessed Aim); your weapon matters little. A Steel or Malice weapon is plenty.
- Prepare the respec gear now: Stealth (Tal Rune Eth Rune), a 2-socket helm for Lore, a 4-socket sword and a 4-socket Paladin shield for two Spirit (Sword/Any Shield). Together with a 'Hawk Branded' amulet they are what lets Holy Bolt reach level 25 at the respec.
- Mistake: Hiring an 'Act 2 Might' or 'Holy Freeze' merc from an old D2 guide. Those do not exist in PD2 (Act 2 = Defiance / Blessed Aim / Thorns).
- Mistake: Taking the main route's clvl 19 Hammer respec out of habit. On this route Holy Fire stays your damage until clvl 30; Holy Bolt with 1-2 bolts and no FCR is much weaker than a 13-point Holy Fire here.
Level 19–29Nightmare Act 3-5 Normal, early Nightmare (no respec)
Skip the Hammer respec and stay a Holy Fire melee Paladin to the end of Normal. Holy Fire keeps getting one point per level until it hits 20 at clvl 25 (it unlocks at 6, so 25 is its first possible max); Izual's two points and everything after go into Resist Fire, its synergy (+16% per level). Zeal with a King's Grace or Malice weapon is plenty: Holy Fire does the killing. Meanwhile collect the runes for two Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) (clvl 25) and Lore (clvl 27) and look for a 'Hawk Branded' amulet (clvl 30). - Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act 5, must do): Ral Rune + Ort Rune + Tal Rune. Exactly the runes for Ancients' Pledge (Ral Rune Ort Rune Tal Rune, 3-socket shield).
- Prison of Ice (Anya) (Act 5, must do): +10 all resistances. Permanent, once per difficulty.
- Den of Evil (respec from Akara) (Act 1, must do): Free full respec (Normal). Use it at clvl 19.
Tips
- Holy Fire 20 plus Resist Fire clears Act 4-5 Normal fast; stand inside packs.
- Do Anya (+10 all resistances) and the Act 5 socket quest: save Larzuk for a 4-socket Paladin shield for Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) if you have not found one.
- Clear the Nightmare Den of Evil as soon as you enter Nightmare: it unlocks Akara's Nightmare respec for clvl 30.
- Mistake: Respeccing before Holy Bolt can reach level 25 (3 bolts). With no +skills gear it fires 2 bolts and kills slower than your Holy Fire (Odealo: respec once you can ensure level 25).
- Mistake: Spending Izual's points on caster skills: they are refunded at the respec anyway, so put them where they help now (Resist Fire).
Level 30–34Nightmare Respec to Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens, Nightmare Act 1-2
At clvl 30 talk to Akara (Nightmare respec, or the Normal one if you saved it). You have 34 points: 29 from levels, 4 from the Normal quests (Den of Evil, Radament, Izual x2) and 1 from the Nightmare Den of Evil. Layout (the build guide's clvl 30 tier plus the Nightmare Den point): Holy Bolt 20, Holy Light 1, Blessed Hammer 1 (PD2 prerequisite chain Holy Bolt -> Holy Light -> Blessed Hammer -> Fist of the Heavens), Fist of the Heavens 7 (its cap at clvl 30), and 1 each in Smite, Charge, Holy Shield, Holy Sword and Holy Nova (the path to Nova; Charge and Holy Shield are the mobility and block Odealo asks for). With Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) sword and shield, Lore and a 'Hawk Branded' amulet (+5 to Combat Skills in total) Holy Bolt is level 25 and fires 3 bolts. From 31, Fist of the Heavens gets every point. - Level 30 (respec): Holy Light +1 -- Prerequisite for Blessed Hammer; synergy for Holy Bolt and FoH later.
- Level 30 (respec): Blessed Hammer +1 -- Prerequisite for Fist of the Heavens.

Tips
- Holy Bolt pierces: line up corridors and doorways so every bolt passes through several monsters.
- Your bolts heal the merc; aim through him when he is tanking a pack.
- Check the FCR breakpoints (Paladin: 0/9/18/30/48/75/125): two Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) plus Stealth and an 'of the Apprentice' amulet reach 75%.
- Mistake: Forgetting Holy Light and Blessed Hammer in the respec: without them Fist of the Heavens cannot be learned in PD2.
- Mistake: Respeccing without the +skills gear ready. At hard level 20 Holy Bolt fires 2 bolts; you need +5 from gear for the third.
Level 35–48Nightmare Nightmare (Fist of the Heavens takes over)
One point per level into Fist of the Heavens until 20 (clvl 43), then Holy Nova; Nightmare Radament and Izual's points go into Holy Nova too. Switch your main attack from Holy Bolt to Fist of the Heavens as soon as it outdamages it on packs (about 10+ points, clvl 35-40); keep Holy Bolt for corridors and bosses. Switch to the Act 4 Light Ascendant merc: her Sanctuary aura lowers enemy magic resistance, exactly what a magic build wants (philanthropy777's Day 2-5 planners).Skill points- +9Fist of the Heavens

Act 4 Light Ascendant (Sanctuary aura): philanthropy777's Day 2-5 planners hire the PD2 Act 4 Light Ascendant: Sanctuary lowers enemy magic resistance. Move Insight to a staff for her (Act 4 mercs use staves).Where to farm

- Act 1 Nightmare Pit (Tamoe Highland): Compact level, good items, easy for Hammer. Drops: Magic/rare items, runes
Quests
- Den of Evil (Nightmare) (Act 1, must do): +1 skill point and a new free respec for Nightmare. You get one free Akara respec per difficulty. Keep this one as a safety net.
- Radament's Lair (Nightmare) (Act 2, must do): +1 skill point
- Lam Esen's Tome (Nightmare) (Act 3, must do): +5 stat points
Tips
- FoH targets a monster and calls down lightning plus seeking holy bolts (reworked in S14 to damage everything they pierce): cast it into the middle of packs.
- Stay close to the Sanctuary merc: her aura radius is small, and the magic-resistance reduction only applies around her.
- Mistake: Putting points into Holy Light before FoH and Holy Nova are maxed: Holy Light's synergy is smaller (10% per point).
Level 49–62Nightmare Nightmare end / Hell entry
Finish Holy Nova (20 at clvl 59 at the earliest), then Holy Light. The Hell Den of Evil point goes into Holy Light too. In Hell, perfect gems drop, so make the Day 1 planner's crafts: Caster gloves and belt, Safety boots and Brilliant rings. Get your resistances up first: Hell monsters hit hard, and FoH's lightning cannot hit magic immunes (a few Hell monsters are magic immune; Sanctuary and FoH's lightning part cover most of them).Skill points- +11Holy Nova

- Prison of Ice (Anya, Nightmare) (Act 5, must do): +10 all resistances

Tips
- Fill resistances before damage: aim for 75% fire/cold/lightning in Hell (Paladin shields with Perfect Diamonds, Anya's +10, Brilliant rings).
- Keep Holy Shield up; with a shield and some Dexterity it gives a lot of block.
- Mistake: Swapping a Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) for a +skills item and dropping below the 75% FCR breakpoint: the extra skill level does not make up for casting slower.

Act 3 Lightning Iron Wolf (Holy Shock aura) with Azurewrath: philanthropy777's endgame planner: an Act 3 Lightning merc with Azurewrath (Sanctuary aura level 10-12) and an ethereal Exile (Defiance aura).Tips
- Recast Holy Shield before it expires; max block plus Herald makes you very hard to hit.
- Use a Token of Absolution (Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction) once the merc has Azurewrath.
- Mistake: Keeping your own one-point Sanctuary once the merc runs a level 10-12 one from Azurewrath: those points are better in Holy Shield.
Rune shopping list
- Steel (Tir Rune + El Rune in a 2-socket Mace, from level 13): Tir Rune and El Rune: very common in Act 1-2 Normal and from Normal Countess.
- Nadir (Nef Rune + Tir Rune in a 2-socket Cap, from level 13): Nef Rune and Tir Rune: Act 1-2 Normal drops, Normal Countess.
- Malice (Ith Rune + El Rune + Eth Rune in a 3-socket Morning Star, from level 15): Ith Rune/Eth Rune: Normal Countess and Act 2 drops; El Rune common.
- Stealth (Tal Rune + Eth Rune in a 2-socket Studded Leather, from level 17): Eth Rune: Countess/drops. Tal Rune: Countess or cube 3 Ith Rune -> Tal Rune.
- Ancients' Pledge (Ral Rune + Ort Rune + Tal Rune in a 3-socket Rondache, from level 21): Act 5 Normal Rescue on Mount Arreat gives exactly Ral Rune + Ort Rune + Tal Rune. Otherwise Nightmare Countess or cube (3 Tal Rune -> Ral Rune, 3 Ral Rune -> Ort Rune).
- Neophyte (Thul Rune + Tir Rune in a 2-socket Scepter, from level 23): Thul Rune: Nightmare Countess or cube 3 Ort Rune -> Thul Rune. Tir Rune common.
- Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) (Tal Rune + Thul Rune + Ort Rune + Amn Rune in a 4-socket Crystal Sword, from level 25): Nightmare Countess is the go-to farm for all four. Amn Rune can be cubed from 3 Thul Rune.
- Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) (Tal Rune + Thul Rune + Ort Rune + Amn Rune in a 4-socket Targe, from level 25): Same as above; the second set usually takes 1-2 extra Countess sessions.
- Lore (Ort Rune + Sol Rune in a 2-socket Full Helm, from level 27): Sol Rune: Nightmare Countess or cube 3 Amn Rune -> Sol Rune.
- Insight (Ral Rune + Tir Rune + Tal Rune + Sol Rune in a 4-socket Battle Staff, from level 27 (merc)): All four from Nightmare Countess. For the Act 4 Ascendant it must be a staff.
- Rhyme (Shael Rune + Eth Rune in a 2-socket Rondache, from level 29): Shael Rune: Nightmare/Hell Countess or cube 3 Sol Rune -> Shael Rune.
- King's Grace (Amn Rune + Ral Rune + Thul Rune in a 3-socket Grand Scepter, from level 25 (only if you stay melee)): Nightmare Countess.
- Heart of the Oak (Ko Rune + Vex Rune + Pul Rune + Thul Rune in a 4-socket Flail, from level 55): Ko Rune from Hell Countess; Pul Rune and Vex Rune mostly by trade or 2 Pul Rune -> Um Rune / Gul Rune upgrades (S14 data: 3 runes per upgrade up to Lem Rune -> Pul Rune, 2 runes from Pul Rune upward).
Alternative leveling builds
- Holy Fire melee (1-18) -> Akara respec into Blessed Hammer at clvl 19: This is the most common community route (Maxroll respecs at 19 after Act 3, Icy Veins at 18). Holy Fire is an aura that damages every monster around you and adds fire damage to your hits, and Resist Fire is its synergy, so it carries Act 1-3 Normal with any weapon. At the respec Blessed Hammer can only hold 2 hard points (a skill takes at most one point per level above its requirement), so the community layout stacks Blessed Aim (clvl 12 skill, already up to 8) as synergy and then adds one Hammer point every level from 20 to 37. Hammer deals magic damage that almost nothing in Normal-Hell resists, and in S14 the hammers phase through walls. Community route: once, at clvl 19 (Maxroll; Icy Veins says 18), from Holy Fire melee into Blessed Hammer with Akara's free Normal respec. Keep the Nightmare and Hell free respecs as a safety net.
- Later respec (end of Normal, clvl 24-28): Keep Holy Fire + Zeal through Normal and respec once Hammer can hold about 7 points. Some players prefer this because Holy Fire is still very strong in Normal Act 4-5; the cost is slower leveling of Hammer itself. Not the most common route. Your Holy Fire is killing fast and you lack Spirit (Sword/Any Shield)/Stealth for casting speed at 19.
- Holy Fire Sacrifice / Physical Sacrifice / Light Sacrifice: hiimpd2 lists Light, Physical and Holy Fire Sacrifice as Top tier for S14 solo mapping. You already level with Zeal and Holy Fire, so you just add Sacrifice (clvl 6, needs Zeal). Each Sacrifice level gives Zeal +20% damage, and Sacrifice gets +25% per level from Redemption and Fanaticism. In S14 each Sacrifice hit costs a flat 3% of maximum life, so life leech is mandatory and you need a Prayer/Redemption or leech plan. Your target endgame is a melee Sacrifice Paladin. Keep the Holy Fire points, never respec, and add Sacrifice/Fanaticism/Redemption instead of Hammer.
- Zealot / Auradin (Charge + Holy Fire): Physical Zeal (Fanaticism + Might/Sacrifice) and Auradins that stack fire auras (Holy Fire plus items like Hand of Justice, Dragon) both start from the exact same early game. Charge (clvl 12, needs Smite) adds a gap closer. You want a melee endgame. See the separate Zealot and Vengeance build guides for the late layout.
Respecs
- When to respec on this route: Once at clvl 30 (Akara's Nightmare respec after the Nightmare Den of Evil, or the Normal one if you saved it), when +5 to Combat Skills from gear (two Spirit (Sword/Any Shield), Lore, 'Hawk Branded' amulet) puts Holy Bolt at level 25. Later changes (dropping the Sanctuary line) use a Token of Absolution.
- Free respecs: Akara offers one free full respec per difficulty after you complete the Den of Evil in that difficulty. You can use the Normal one any time while you are still in Normal.
- Token of Absolution: Cube Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction into a Token of Absolution. In PD2 the essences drop from the act bosses in Nightmare and Hell (Andariel/Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo, Baal).
Common leveling mistakes
- Taking the clvl 19 Hammer respec of the main route and then a second respec into Holy Bolt: you only get one free respec per difficulty.
- Respeccing before Holy Bolt can reach level 25 (Odealo).
- Leveling FoH before its prerequisites: PD2 needs Holy Bolt -> Holy Light -> Blessed Hammer -> Fist of the Heavens.
- Following an old D2 guide's merc advice. PD2 Act 2 mercs are only Defiance, Blessed Aim and Thorns. Might is the Act 5 Barbarian. Holy Freeze does not exist as a merc aura.
- Expecting Blessed Hammer to be strong right at the respec. It holds only 2 hard points at clvl 19; the community layout compensates with 8 points in Blessed Aim and then one Hammer point per level.
- Forgetting Holy Light. Blessed Hammer requires Holy Light (clvl 12, which itself needs Holy Bolt), not just Blessed Aim as in vanilla.
- Putting points into Energy. S14 Paladins get +2 mana per level, and Insight on the merc covers the rest.
- Ignoring FCR breakpoints (0/9/18/30/48/75/125). Gear for 75%, then 125%.
- Stacking +skills expecting more synergy damage. Vigor and Blessed Aim synergies count hard points only.
What is different in PD2
- Holy Bolt damages all enemies in PD2 (vanilla: only undead), pierces, and fires extra bolts at levels 15 and 25.
- Blessed Hammer needs Holy Light (new PD2 skill, clvl 12, needs Holy Bolt). Its synergies are Vigor and Blessed Aim (+12% magic damage per hard level each).
- S14: Blessed Hammers phase through walls and objects.
- S14: Concentration's uninterruptible chance is 15% base plus 1% per 3 levels (was 20%). It gives Blessed Hammer half of its normal damage bonus and only to the caster.
- New PD2 skills: Holy Light, Holy Nova (clvl 30, 4 s cooldown) and Joust (clvl 24, needs Vengeance: teleport-strike with a movement speed buff).
- Zeal is a clvl 1 skill in PD2, Smite also at 1, Charge at 12 (needs Smite), Holy Shield at 18 (needs Charge).
- S14: Sacrifice costs a flat 3% of maximum life per use; Smite gained life/mana steal and +20% splash radius.
- PD2 mercs: Act 1 Fire Rogue = Vigor aura, Cold = Meditation; Act 4 Ascendants (staves only): Light = Sanctuary, Dark = Amplify Damage. Mercs get full experience from your kills in S14.
- S14: +2 mana per level and +2 mana per Energy for Paladins.
- New leveling runeword Neophyte (Thul Rune Tir Rune, 2-socket scepter): 30% FCR. Paladin-only shields roll up to 4 sockets and carry Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) perfectly.

Charms
Every philanthropy777 planner fills up with 'Lion Branded' grand charms (+1 Combat Skills) and 'Arcane' large charms (3-4% FCR) from Day 2 on, plus Hellfire Torch, Annihilus and Gheed's Fortune. The endgame planner switches most small and large charms to life and resistances. Odealo: grand skillers first; once Holy Bolt is around level 40, large charms with +3% magic skill damage and life become better than more skillers. Life, FHR and magic find on small charms.
- Grand charms: +1 to Combat Skills (Paladin Only) (prefix 'Lion Branded', level req 42) with life (suffix 'of Vita') or 12% FHR (suffix 'of Balance') - all Day 2+ planners
- Large charms: 3-4% Faster Cast Rate (prefix 'Arcane') - Day 1, 3 of them; with +8% FHR (suffix 'of Balance') in the endgame planner; +2-3% to Magic Skill Damage (prefix 'Effervescent' or 'Scintillating') with life (Odealo, once Holy Bolt is about level 40)
- Small charms: All Resistances +3-5 (prefix 'Shimmering') + Life +16-20 (suffix 'of Vita') - endgame planner; Fire Resist +10-11 (prefix 'Ruby') - Max Block planner; Life, FHR (suffix 'of Balance', 5%), magic find (Odealo)
- Hellfire Torch: Paladin torch: +Paladin skills, stats, resistances (Day 2+ planners).
- Annihilus: +1 all skills, stats, resistances, experience (Day 2+ planners).
- Gheed's Fortune: Magic and gold find (Day 2-5 planners, Odealo).
Socket fillers
- helm / armor (magic find): Perfect Topaz -- philanthropy777's Day 2-5 planners put a Perfect Topaz in Harlequin Crest, Skin of the Vipermagi and the Naj's pieces for magic find.
- weapon / shield (Hand of Blessed Light, Herald of Zakarum): Rare Jewel (+3-5% to Magic Skill Damage (prefix 'Scintillating', new in S14), +2-3 Mana after each Kill (prefix 'Aureolin'), 7% FHR (suffix 'of Truth'), magic find (prefix 'Fortuitous')) -- The endgame planner uses four 'MAGIC/MPK/FHR/MF' jewels; DarkHumility's S14 beta build uses 5% magic jewels. A magic jewel ('Scintillating' 3-5% magic skill damage, prefix only) is the budget version.
- merc helm / weapon (Griffon's Eye, Azurewrath corrupted for sockets): Rainbow Facet -- The endgame planner puts lightning facets in the Act 3 merc's gear to boost his Lightning and Static Field.
06Mercenary
Which mercenary
Act 4 -- Light Ascendant (Sanctuary) early/mid; Act 3 Lightning Iron Wolf with Azurewrath in the endgame
philanthropy777's Day 2-5 planners (Naj's and Max Block) hire the PD2 Act 4 Light Ascendant, whose Sanctuary aura lowers enemy magic resistance: exactly what a magic build wants. He carries Insight in a Gnarled Staff (Act 4 mercs use staves) for Meditation, the build's mana fix. The Day 1 planner uses an Act 2 Defiance Desert Guard with Insight in a Trident instead, which works the same for mana. In the endgame planner the merc becomes an Act 3 Lightning Iron Wolf (Holy Shock aura, casts Static Field) with Azurewrath (Sanctuary aura level 10-12) and an ethereal Exile (Defiance aura). Act 3 mercs can wield 1-handed swords and Paladin shields (wiki), and ethereal items do not lose durability on mercs. Your Holy Bolts pass through and heal your merc (Odealo).
Alternatives
- Act 2 Defensive (Defiance) with Insight: philanthropy777's Day 1 planner. Cheapest Meditation source while you have no Act 4 merc.
- Act 2 Any Desert Guard with Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) (Sanctuary aura 17-20): Odealo's suggestion: give the merc an Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) for a stronger Sanctuary aura, or Stormlash for repeated Static Field procs. DarkHumility's S14 beta video also shows an Act 4 merc with his own Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) staff. Both are expensive.

07Breakpoints
| Stat | Breakpoints | Aim for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCR (cast rate) | 0918304875125 | 75% (all philanthropy777 planners and Odealo's low-budget target); 125% is the high-end target (Odealo, TDL's S12 Diablo Clone build) | Paladin. Examples (S14 data): Day 1 = 2x Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) 50-70 + Stealth 20 + Caster belt 10 + Caster gloves 5-10 + 3 Arcane large charms 9-12 = 94-122%, so 75% for sure. Naj's = Naj's Puzzler 50 + Naj's Circlet 20 + 20 set bonus on Naj's Light Plate + belt 10 + gloves 10 + charms = over 100%. Endgame = circlet 20 + Occultist 20 + Arachnid Mesh 10 + four 10% FCR corruptions (gloves, belt, both rings) = 90%, i.e. the 75% breakpoint; 125% needs much more (e.g. Ephemeral 20, FCR charms). |
| FHR (hit recovery) | 0/7/15/27/48/86/200 (staves and spears: 0/3/7/13/20/32/48/75/120/280) | 48% (Odealo: good enough for most content) | Paladin. Odealo warns that a staff or spear (e.g. Naj's Puzzler) uses the slower table. FHR comes from Spirit (Sword/Any Shield), Stealth, FHR jewels and 'of Balance' charms in the planners. |
| FBR (block rate) | 041115274886 | Not targeted by the planners; Herald of Zakarum (30%) and Griswold's Honor (65%) bring FBR. Max block chance (75%) matters more. | Paladin with Holy Shield. Intermediate values are the vanilla table; the PD2 wiki confirms 86% as the cap. |
| FRW (run/walk) | — | Charge and Joust early, Blink charges from Enigma or Naj's Puzzler later; crafted Brilliant boots (5-10%), Silkweave (30%) and Enigma (25%). Vigor (endgame planner, TDL for Diablo Clone) adds movement speed. |
08Tips & Tricks
Tips
- PD2 Holy Bolt damages every monster, not just undead, and pierces; ignore vanilla advice that calls it an undead-only skill.
- Cast Fist of the Heavens on a monster in the middle of a pack; since S14 each bolt also hits everything it passes through.
- Line up your merc with Holy Bolt: the bolts heal him on the way to the monsters (Odealo).
- Holy Bolt fires a second bolt at skill level 15 and a third at 25; +skills count, so plan for level 25 before you respec (Odealo, TDL).
- Holy Light points boost Holy Bolt and Fist of the Heavens but not Holy Nova, so max it last.
- Holy Nova has a 4-second cooldown: one cast per pack, then back to FoH.
- Put 1 point in Sanctuary early (Day 1 planner): it is your only magic-resistance reduction, and +skills raise it.
- Hire the Act 4 Light Ascendant (Sanctuary aura) with an Insight staff as soon as you can (Day 2-5 planners).
- Reach 75% FCR first; Caster crafts, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) and 'Arcane' large charms get you there on Day 1.
- Use Joust and Charge for movement until you have Blink charges (Enigma or Naj's Puzzler).
- +1 Combat Skills grand charms ('Lion Branded') are the best charm upgrade early; later, Odealo prefers magic-damage large charms.
- In S14, put new 'Scintillating' magic-damage jewels (+3-5%) in Hand of Blessed Light, Herald of Zakarum and other sockets.
- For Diablo Clone, TDL swaps to Lava Gout and Waterwalk and uses Vigor to move; hiimpd2 recommends 90% fire resistance and 25% PDR at T0.
Where to farm
- Chaos Sanctuary (Hell): hiimpd2 starter tag. Mostly demons with low magic resistance; FoH's bolts spread through the packs.
- Key bosses: Countess, Summoner, Nihlathak (and Blood Raven, Bloodwitch, Izual in Hell): hiimpd2 tags Holy Bolt / FOH for key farming; single bosses melt to Holy Bolt plus FoH.
- Uber Tristram (Pandemonium): hiimpd2 starter tag. Holy Bolt's single-target damage and Holy Shield's block suit the uber fights.
- Early maps (T1): hiimpd2 starter tag 'Early Map'. Prefer dense maps where the S14 FoH bolts hit many monsters.
- Diablo Clone (Vision of Terror): hiimpd2 bossing list: T0 Easy, T2 Moderate. Annihilus drop.
Hardcore
No community source covers a hardcore Holy Bolt Paladin specifically. General guidance from the planners: the Max Block route (shield, Holy Shield, about 150 dexterity) and the endgame setup (Herald of Zakarum, Holy Shield 14, Redemption) are the safer templates; Naj's set gives up the shield and uses the slow staff FHR table. Keep 75% resistances, take Half Freeze/Cannot Be Frozen (Brilliant crafts, Marrowwalk on the merc, CBF corruption on the amulet), and fight from range: Fist of the Heavens and Holy Bolt let you attack from outside melee packs. Skip maps with magic-immune or extra-damage modifiers. Holy Bolt healing keeps your merc alive, which matters a lot in HC.
09FAQ
About this build
Doesn't Holy Bolt only damage undead?
Not in PD2. In vanilla, Holy Bolt only hurts undead and FoH's bolts only undead and demons. PD2 changed Holy Bolt in Season 1 ('bolts now pierce all allies and enemies, healing or damaging each') and FoH's bolts in Season 2 ('now damage all creature types'). The S14 game data agrees: the holybolt missile has no undead-only filter. Holy Bolt still heals allies, including your merc; FoH's bolts do not heal.
Holy Bolt or Fist of the Heavens as the main skill?
Both, but philanthropy777's S14 planners set Fist of the Heavens as the main skill: it locks on, spreads bolts to up to 50 nearby enemies and, since S14, hits everything those bolts pass through. Holy Bolt (Odealo's main skill, S13 guide) is better on single targets and in corridors, because all three bolts can hit one target, and it heals your merc. You max both anyway, because they are each other's synergies.
How good is it at mapping?
Mid on hiimpd2's S14 solo list (Top > Good > Decent > Mid > Bad), with no recorded best clear yet, and B on Odealo's pre-launch tier list. The S14 FoH buff helps a lot in dense maps, but area coverage in open maps is still below the Top builds. Play it for its start, bossing and farming, and treat mapping as solid but not top speed.
Can it kill Diablo Clone?
Yes. hiimpd2 rates Holy Bolt Easy for T0 and Moderate for T2 Vision of Terror, with TDL's video (S12, full Naj's set, 125% FCR, about 3k Holy Bolt damage, Lava Gout/Waterwalk swap and Vigor for movement) as the reference kill. hiimpd2 recommends 90% fire resistance and 25% PDR at T0 (50% at T2). It is not rated for Rathma or Lucion.
Which mercenary should I use?
Day 1: an Act 2 Defiance Desert Guard with Insight. Day 2-5: the Act 4 Light Ascendant (Sanctuary aura lowers magic resistance) with Insight in a staff. Endgame: an Act 3 Lightning Iron Wolf with Azurewrath (Sanctuary) and ethereal Exile (Defiance), as in philanthropy777's planners. Odealo also suggests an Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) or Stormlash merc.
What FCR do I need?
75% is the planners' target and Odealo's low-budget breakpoint (Paladin table 0/9/18/30/48/75/125). 125% is the high-end goal; TDL reached it for Diablo Clone with Naj's set, Magefist or Trang-Oul's Claws and Gloom's Trap.
How do I deal with magic immunes?
Sanctuary (your own 1 point, the Act 4 Light merc, or Azurewrath/Asylum (Hammer/Polearm/Spear/Missile Weapon/2H Sword) on the merc), FoH's lightning strike, and your merc. Immune breaking works at half effectiveness in PD2, so skip packs you cannot break. See the Immunities section.
Naj's set or Max Block for Day 2-5?
Both are philanthropy777 planners. The Naj's set (Naj's Puzzler, Naj's Circlet, Naj's Light Plate) gives +6 all skills, about 90% FCR and Blink charges from the Puzzler, but no shield and the slower staff FHR table. Max Block (crafted FoH scepter, Harlequin Crest, Skin of the Vipermagi, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) shield, about 150 dexterity) keeps Holy Shield block and is safer. The planner also notes you can use the Heaven's Brethren set.
Why put points into Joust and Charge?
They are your movement before Blink charges: Charge rushes to a spot, Joust teleports you to an enemy and gives movement speed. Odealo recommends both. The Day 2-5 planners put 5-8 points into Joust, because hard points lower its cooldown (wiki: about 4.1 s at level 1, 2.2 s at level 20).
When should I respec, and does the Paladin leveling guide work for this build?
Use the class guide's Holy Fire opening, but skip its clvl 19 respec into Blessed Hammer. Respec into Holy Bolt around clvl 30 with the Nightmare Akara respec, when gear can push Holy Bolt to level 25 (Odealo). Later tweaks need a Token of Absolution.
Is Holy Nova worth 20 points with its cooldown?
Yes, as a synergy: each point adds 11% to Holy Bolt and Fist of the Heavens. Its own damage (synergized 15% per point by FoH and Holy Bolt) is a strong burst every 4 seconds. All four philanthropy777 planners max it.
Does +% magic skill damage work on this build?
The community builds use it: Odealo recommends +3% magic damage large charms, DarkHumility's S14 build uses 5% magic jewels and philanthropy777's endgame planner uses 3% magic damage jewels. We did not test how it applies to each part of each skill.
Leveling questions
When exactly should I switch to Blessed Hammer?
The common community timing is clvl 19 after Act 3 (Maxroll) or as soon as 18 (Icy Veins). Level with Holy Fire + Resist Fire until then, then use Akara's free Normal respec: Holy Bolt 1, Holy Light 1, Might 1, Blessed Aim 8, Blessed Hammer 2, Concentration 2, Prayer 1, Defiance 1, Vigor 2, Smite 1. After that, every level goes into Blessed Hammer until 20.
Is the Act 2 Might merc still the best?
There is no Act 2 Might merc in PD2. Act 2 offers Defiance, Blessed Aim and Thorns. For a Hammerdin, hire the Act 4 Light Ascendant: her Sanctuary aura lowers monster magic resistance. For a melee Paladin, Act 2 Defiance or the Act 5 Barbarian (who has Might in PD2) are the usual picks.
Do I need Energy for Hammer?
No. Put Insight on the merc's staff for Meditation and use Lore/Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) mana. In S14 Paladins also gain +2 mana per level. Early on, a few mana potions are cheaper than stat points.
Why does my Hammer miss enemies that are far away?
Hammers spiral outward from your position in a fixed pattern. A target at the wrong distance is only clipped occasionally. Walk up so the enemy is right next to you; the spiral then passes through it on every cast.
Can I level as a Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens caster instead?
Yes. In PD2 Holy Bolt hurts every monster, and the Holy Bolt / Holy Light / Fist of the Heavens / Holy Nova tree synergizes internally. It is mana-hungry early (take the Act 1 Cold Rogue for Meditation), and hiimpd2 rates it Mid for mapping, below Hammerdin.
Is Sacrifice still good after the S14 change?
Yes. Sacrifice now costs 3% of maximum life per hit, instead of a percentage of your physical damage (S14 patch notes). hiimpd2 lists Light, Physical and Holy Fire Sacrifice as Top tier for S14 solo mapping. You need life leech to sustain it.
Which shield should a Paladin use while leveling?
A paladin-only shield (Targe, Rondache, Heraldic Shield, Aerin Shield, Crown Shield, Akaran Targe/Rondache...). They roll innate resistances and up to 4 sockets: Ancients' Pledge at 21, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) at 25, Rhyme at 29. Herald of Zakarum (clvl 42) is the unique to look for later.
General PD2 questions
How do I respec: Akara or a Token of Absolution?
Akara: after you finish Den of Evil, Akara offers one free full respec (skills and stats) per difficulty. Use the Normal one right after switching from your leveling build. Respeccing early is fine because you get more chances later.
Token of Absolution: cube one of each of the four essences:
- Twisted Essence of Suffering (Andariel ~16%, Duriel ~21%)
- Charged Essence of Hatred (Mephisto ~8.3%)
- Burning Essence of Terror (Diablo ~8.3%)
- Festering Essence of Destruction (Baal ~8.3%)
In PD2 the essences drop in Nightmare and Hell at the same rates, and they stack in the materials tab. Right-click the token to reset all skill and stat points. Tokens are also easy to buy from other players, so a respec is rarely a big deal. Experiment with builds freely.
Which mercenary should I hire?
PD2 reworked every merc. They have the same stats whichever difficulty you hire them in, and they all wear helm, armor, gloves, boots and belt. The PD2 merc table:
- Act 1 Rogue: Fire (Vigor aura), Cold (Meditation), Physical (Slow Movement). Bows and crossbows.
- Act 2 Desert Guard: Defensive (Defiance), Offensive (Blessed Aim), Combat (Thorns). Polearms, spears and javelins; one-handed weapons do double damage. There is no Might, Prayer or Holy Freeze Act 2 merc in PD2.
- Act 3 Iron Wolf: Fire (Cleansing), Cold (Prayer), Lightning (Holy Shock plus Static Field, which Season 14 reduced to 8% life).
- Act 4 Ascendant (new): Dark (casts Amplify Damage), Light (Sanctuary). Staves.
- Act 5 Barbarian: Combat (Might), Warcries (Battle Orders plus Battle Cry).
The usual default is an Act 2 Defiance merc in Insight (mana, and survives well). Physical builds love Might or Battle Orders, and casters often like Act 3 Cold for Prayer. Season 14 mercs get full XP from your kills, so they keep up easily.
What are breakpoints and which ones matter?
Diablo 2 animations run in whole frames, so Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR), Faster Block Rate and Increased Attack Speed only help once you reach the next threshold. Anything between thresholds is wasted. PD2 uses the vanilla FCR tables, for example:
- Sorceress FCR: 0/9/20/37/63/105/200. Frozen Orb and Chain Lightning use a slower table, 0/7/15/23/35/52/78/117/194.
- Paladin and Necromancer FCR: 0/9/18/30/48/75/125.
For most casters, 105% (Sorceress) or 75% (Paladin and Necromancer) is the main target. Get one or two FHR breakpoints for survival, such as 42-60% on a Sorceress. PD2 attack mechanics differ from vanilla: Whirlwind ignores IAS and hits at fixed intervals, Berserk uses Frenzy breakpoints, and item IAS has diminishing returns. Use the PD2 wiki breakpoint tables or an S14-aware planner for your class and weapon. Check a breakpoint before paying a lot for 5% more FCR.
Where do I get Stealth early, and how do I farm Tal Rune and Eth Rune?
Stealth is Tal Rune + Eth Rune in a 2-socket body armor and needs clvl 17. It gives 20% FCR, 20% FHR, 10% faster run/walk, +6 Dexterity and 3 magic damage reduction, which makes it the standard leveling armor for nearly every class.
- Base: any 2-socket body armor. Quilted Armor, Leather Armor and Hard Leather Armor (max 2 sockets) are cheap and light. Check Charsi and later vendors for socketed armor, or keep grey 2-socket drops from Act 1-2.
- Eth Rune: a common drop in Normal Act 1-2 (Eth Rune needs clvl 15). You can also cube 3 Nef Rune into 1 Eth Rune.
- Tal Rune: farm the Countess in the Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh, Act 1). Her rune table goes up to Ral Rune in Normal, so Tal Rune comes up regularly. Or cube 3 Ith Rune into 1 Tal Rune.
Save spare Tals: they also go into Ancients' Pledge, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) and Insight. With Season 14's stash rework, runes stack in their own tab and upgrades need no key.
How does corruption with Worldstone Shards work?
Put an item and a Worldstone Shard in the cube and transmute. The result depends on the item:
- Normal (white/grey) items without sockets: 50% they gain sockets (up to the base maximum), 50% they become a random rare.
- Magic, rare, set or unique items that can have sockets (helm, chest, shield, weapon, quiver): 25% sockets (1-3 on armor, 2-4 on one-handed weapons, 3-6 on two-handed), 50% a corruption modifier, 25% "brick" into a random rare of the same type.
- Items that cannot have sockets (gloves, boots, belt, ring, amulet): 75% a corruption modifier, 25% brick.
Modifiers come in low, mid and high rarity tiers. High-rarity rolls are things like +1 all skills or 20% FCR on chests, +1 all skills on weapons, helms and shields, or +15% FRW on boots. A corrupted item can never be corrupted again, but most other recipes still work on it, including Puzzleboxes for sockets afterwards. Runewords count as regular socketed items and can't be corrupted. Make the base corrupt first.
What should I corrupt, and in which order?
Corrupt items where a 25% brick doesn't hurt much and a good roll is worth a lot:
- Runeword bases before you socket them. A white 0-socket base has a 50% chance to get max sockets, so it is the cheap way to make Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) shields, Insight polearms or 4-socket armor. A bricked white base costs almost nothing.
- Duplicate uniques or sets, or cheap ones you have spares of. Aim for sockets or high-rarity modifiers.
- Rings, amulets, gloves, boots and belts that are good but replaceable: 75% to gain a modifier.
- Annihilus uses the special Tainted Worldstone Shard from Rathma, not a normal shard.
For socketable uniques, the community advice is to corrupt first and Puzzlebox second. Shards are cheaper than Puzzleboxes, and boxing first doesn't lower the 25% brick chance, so you'd risk losing the box. Never corrupt your only copy of a build-defining item unless you can afford to lose it.
How do I reroll grand charms (or any magic item)?
Cube a magic item + 3 perfect gems (any type) to get a new magic item of the same base with the same item level and fresh random affixes. This is how players hunt skillers: grand charms with +1 to a class skill tab, ideally with life or faster hit recovery too. You can also reroll small and large charms or magic jewels. Notes:
- The item level never drops, so a high-ilvl grand charm (for example from Hell or maps) can be rerolled endlessly. A low-ilvl one can't roll high-tier affixes no matter how often you try.
- The recipe doesn't work on corrupted items or maps.
- Perfect gems drop only in Hell, but 3 flawless gems cube into a perfect (no key in Season 14), and chipped gems slowly upgrade too.
- Rares use a different recipe: rare + 3 Perfect Skulls makes a new rare, but at a lower item level (0.4 x clvl + 0.4 x ilvl).
How do maps work, and what do I need to open one?
Maps are PD2's endgame zones. To open one you need a level 80+ character who has killed the Hell Ancients. Right-click the map in your inventory while in Harrogath in Hell. Only one map or uber zone can be opened per game. The tiers:
- Tier 1: area level 87
- Tier 2: area level 88
- Tier 3: area level 89
- Tier 4 (dungeons): area level 92, made from a T3 map with a Horadrim Scarab and meant for strong groups
Your first maps come from Anya's Hell reward, rare drops in Hell and Nightmare Act 5, and corrupted zones. After that, maps mostly drop inside maps, with a chance of higher-tier maps. Each map has affixes that add density, experience and magic/gold find, plus monster modifiers. Before opening a map, check its immunities against your build. Map events (11% on normal, 22% magic, 33% rare maps) add bonus content such as the Treasure Fallen, the Dark Wanderer (extra Worldstone Shards) or Shadow of Mendeln (Splinter of the Void).
10Season 14 changes
S13 -> S14 changes for this build (PD2 wiki Patch Notes, hiimpd2 Season 14 page; calculations approximate):
- Fist of the Heavens (big buff): its holy bolts now damage every enemy they pierce, instead of only the monster each bolt was aimed at; a bug where only 4 bolts dealt damage was fixed; and a 3-frame next-hit delay stops one bolt from hitting the same monster repeatedly. Example: a cast into a pack of 10 monsters at skill level 35 (about 2,700-3,000 damage per bolt with 660% synergies). In S13 at most 4 bolts dealt damage, so about 4 hits = 11-12k total. In S14 all 10 bolts hit their targets (about 27-30k), plus extra hits on every monster a bolt passes through on the way, so roughly 2.5x or more on dense packs.
- Holy Bolt, Holy Light, Holy Nova, Sanctuary: no S14 changes. Holy Bolt still pierces and fires 3 bolts at level 25; Holy Nova still has a 4-second cooldown.
- Paladin mana per level 1.5 -> 2 and per Energy 1.5 -> 2. At clvl 90 that is about +44 mana over S13 (89 level-ups x 0.5); with 0 Energy nothing changes from stats.
- New jewel prefix: +2-5% magic damage (S14 data: 'Effervescent' 2-3%, 'Scintillating' 3-5% magic skill damage). Example: four 5% jewels in Hand of Blessed Light and Herald of Zakarum add about +20% damage.
- Rose Branded (+3 Combat Skills) can now roll on dropped rare Paladin shields, and +2 class skills can roll on dropped rare chests, helms and shields: more ways to stack Combat Skills.
- Kyovoshad (T3 map) now has magic immunes; take Sanctuary or skip it.
- Mercenaries get full experience from your kills, so the Act 4 Sanctuary merc keeps up.
- Blessed Hammer (hammers through walls) only matters as a 1-point prerequisite here.
