01Overview
Season 14 rating
hiimpd2 S14 solo: Top; hiimpd2 S14 group: Mid; not on the hiimpd2 S14 bossing or starter lists
Cold Elemental (Arctic Blast/Hurricane) is in the Top tier of hiimpd2's Season 14 solo mapping list. Its best S14 clear there is Sewers of Harrogath in 2:49 (a full clear by the player ARTICBLASTER), one of the fastest times on the list. On the S14 group list it is only Mid (DPS role), with the note that the damage is strong but channeled skills can't keep pace with a fast group. S14 buffed Hurricane (synergies 12% -> 13%, higher max damage per level), and hiimpd2's S14 changes page rates the build 'Buff'.
Be aware of what the tier does not cover. The build is not on hiimpd2's S14 bossing tier list (Vision of Terror/Diablo Clone, Voidstone/Rathma, Shadow of Hatred/Lucion). The Druid builds rated there are Maul, Fury, Bears, Rabies, Summoner, Fire and Wind. It is also not one of hiimpd2's S14 Druid starter builds (Summons, Bear - Shockwave, Wind Elemental). Odealo has a dedicated Arctic Blast Druid guide (last updated 29 September 2026, before S14 launched), but the build does not appear on Odealo's own S14 tier list (28 September 2026). In short, it is a proven top mapper with no community record for uber bosses.
Summary
The Cold Elemental Druid channels Arctic Blast, a continuous cone of cold, while Hurricane pulses cold damage around the character every 0.8 seconds. Tornado adds physical damage, and Cyclone Armor absorbs elemental damage. Gust is the mobility skill: an instant short-range teleport on a cooldown. In Odealo's words, the build 'excels in dense Maps': you Gust into a pack, let Hurricane soften everything around you, and sweep Arctic Blast through the monsters.
Most of the damage is cold. Per the S14 Skills.txt, Arctic Blast gets +12% cold damage per hard point in Tornado and in Cyclone Armor and +16% per point in Hurricane, so +800% with all three maxed. Hurricane gets +13% per point in Arctic Blast and in Tornado (+520% at 20/20). While Arctic Blast hits a monster it lowers that monster's cold resistance: -25% at skill level 20, -1% per extra level. Per the PD2 wiki this can break cold immunity. Monsters killed by Arctic Blast shatter into a small Frost Nova. Tornado deals physical damage. It takes +14% per point from Arctic Blast, Twister and Hurricane, and since S14 it hits much more often (next-hit delay 25 -> 9 frames) and benefits from critical and deadly strike.
Damage scales with +skills (cold, Elemental, Druid and all skills), +% cold skill damage and -% enemy cold resistance. The key items are Frostwind (+2-3 Cold Skills, +2 Arctic Blast), Medusa's Gaze (+2 Cold Skills), Nightwing's Veil, Snowclash, cold Rainbow Facets, and an Infinity (Polearm/Spear) mercenary. Hiim's own S14 planner (clvl 95) uses Frostwind + Medusa's Gaze, Nightwing's Veil, Steel Carapace, Dracul's Grasp, Siggard's Staunch, a crafted +2 Druid amulet, Constricting Loop and The Stone of Jordan. This guide follows that planner and Odealo's gear list.
Who it is for: players who want a fast, comfortable map farmer that handles cold immunes with Tornado and does not need Enigma (Gust already moves you). Not for: players who want a proven uber/T0 boss killer, or who dislike standing still while channeling.
What works
- Top tier on hiimpd2's S14 solo list, with one of the fastest listed S14 clears (Sewers of Harrogath 2:49)
- Buffed in S14: Hurricane synergies 12% -> 13% and higher max damage per level (about +24% Hurricane damage at 20/20/20, approximate)
- Gust gives fast mobility without Enigma, and casting Twister or Tornado shortens Gust's cooldown by 0.52 seconds (PD2 wiki)
- Arctic Blast lowers enemy cold resistance by itself (-25% at level 20, more with +skills), and Tornado adds physical damage for cold immunes
- Cyclone Armor absorbs fire, cold and lightning damage, and Hurricane chills everything around you (Odealo: 'surprisingly durable')
- Odealo: 'Can level effectively as Arctic Blast instead of requiring a completely different leveling build'
What to plan around
- Not on hiimpd2's S14 bossing tier list. No community record for Diablo Clone, Rathma or Lucion
- Only Mid on hiimpd2's S14 group list: channeled damage can't keep up with fast groups
- Arctic Blast is channeled, so you stand still while it hits. FHR and life matter, and the playstyle 'can feel awkward' (Odealo)
- Mana-hungry before endgame gear: Arctic Blast drains mana every frame
- Best-in-slot items (Frostwind, Medusa's Gaze, Nightwing's Veil, an Infinity (Polearm/Spear) merc) are high-level uniques and runewords
- Leveling directly as Arctic Blast is slow on mana until Insight on the merc (the Druid guide's Arctic Blast route plans for it); the Druid guide's main route levels as Fire
Playstyle
Gust into a pack, keep Hurricane up, then channel Arctic Blast and sweep the cone across the monsters. Odealo describes the rhythm as 'You Gust into position, let Hurricane soften everything around you, then sweep Arctic Blast through the pack while Cyclone Armor absorbs incoming elemental pressure.' Gust has a cooldown (6.32 seconds at level 1, -0.2 seconds per level, minimum 0.52 seconds per the PD2 wiki), and every Twister or Tornado cast cuts the remaining cooldown by 0.52 seconds. Throwing a Tornado or two at the pack therefore also brings the next Gust back sooner.
Rotation
- Precast: Cyclone Armor, Oak Sage (Hiim's planner has 12 points in it), and Battle Orders from a Call to Arms on weapon swap (Hiim's planner).
- Cast Hurricane. It lasts a long time and pulses cold damage in a 6-yard radius every 0.8 seconds; recast it when it runs out.
- Gust into or next to the pack.
- Channel Arctic Blast and sweep the cone across the pack. Its -cold resistance applies only while the beam is hitting, plus 0.4 seconds after (wiki). Kills shatter into small Frost Novas.
- Cold immune or very cold-resistant monsters: cast Tornado. It is physical and hits much more often since S14. Each cast also shortens Gust's cooldown.
- Gust to the next pack as soon as the cooldown is back. Recast Cyclone Armor when it breaks.
Positioning: Arctic Blast's range grows to 16 yards at skill level 13+ (wiki), so you don't need to stand on top of the pack. Stand at the edge where the cone covers the most monsters, and let Hurricane hit everything that reaches you. Because you stand still while channeling, Odealo stresses life (all spare stats into Vitality) and FHR (56% target with a staff; see Breakpoints). Gust out of bad spots instead of tanking them.
Bossing: Honest note: there is no community bossing data for this build. hiimpd2's S14 bossing list (Diablo Clone, Rathma, Lucion) does not include it, and neither Odealo nor Hiim's planner mentions bosses. For the normal Hell act bosses and map bosses the approach is simple. Keep Hurricane up, channel Arctic Blast on the boss (its debuff lowers the boss's cold resistance while it hits), and let the merc's Conviction (Infinity (Polearm/Spear)) or Medusa's Gaze Lower Resist proc lower it further. Tornado adds physical damage, and since S14 it gets critical and deadly strike. For uber content, a Druid from hiimpd2's bossing list (Maul, Fury, Bears, Rabies, Summoner, Fire, Wind) is the proven choice.
Mapping: This is the build's job. hiimpd2 benchmarks it on Sewers of Harrogath (best S14 clear 2:49; an S13 video by Maxinski shows a 3:30 Sewers run at 107% density). Dense maps and maps with lots of corridors suit the cone and Hurricane best. Reroll or skip maps that add extra cold resistance or cold immunity unless your merc carries Infinity (Polearm/Spear). Mana sustain comes from The Stone of Jordan, Frostburn's +20-40% max mana (S14 value) and life/mana after kill. Hiim's crafted amulet rolls Life after each Kill.
02Skills
Level 30 · 33 skill points
- Arctic Blast 20
- Cyclone Armor 5
- Tornado 5
- Gust 1
- Hurricane 1
- Twister 1
Skill order
- Arctic Blast from clvl 1 as the main skill (Odealo)
- 1 point Cyclone Armor at 6, Twister at 12, Gust at 18
- Max Arctic Blast
- Tornado from 24, Hurricane from 30
- Max Hurricane (+16% to Arctic Blast per point; it also synergizes with Tornado)
- Max Tornado (synergy to Arctic Blast and Hurricane, physical damage for cold immunes)
- Max Cyclone Armor (synergy to Arctic Blast, more absorb)
- Gust 4 (Hiim) or about 15 (Odealo)
- Leftover points: Oak Sage line (Hiim: Oak Sage 12 plus 1-point summons) or Twister (Odealo: 5)
Synergies
All five community S14 planners we read (Hiim, Earl_Grey, Wuslwiz, Kaoz, stal1nek's HC plan) and Odealo's guide max the same four skills: Arctic Blast, Hurricane, Tornado and Cyclone Armor (stal1nek's Hardcore plan is the exception: it keeps Cyclone Armor at 1 and maxes Summon Grizzly). Synergies per the S14 Skills.txt:
- Arctic Blast: +12% cold damage per hard point in Tornado and Cyclone Armor, +16% per point in Hurricane (+800% at 20/20/20).
- Hurricane: +13% cold damage per point in Arctic Blast and Tornado (+520% at 20/20; it was 12% in S13).
- Tornado: +14% physical damage per point in Arctic Blast, Twister and Hurricane (16% in S13).
- Cyclone Armor: absorbs elemental damage. It gains +10 absorb per hard point in Twister and Tornado and +3 per point of Energy (wiki).
- Twister (1 point, required for Tornado) and Gust (mobility) are the utility skills.
Gust points differ between sources. Hiim uses 4 hard points and puts the remaining points into the Summoning tree: 12 in Oak Sage plus 1 each in Summon Ravens, Poison Creeper, Heart of Wolverine, Summon Spirit Wolf, Carrion Vine, Spirit of Barbs, Summon Dire Wolf, Solar Creeper and Summon Grizzly. Earl_Grey, Wuslwiz and Kaoz put 20 into Oak Sage instead. Odealo puts about 15 hard points into Gust for a shorter cooldown, 5 into Twister and 1 each into Poison Creeper, Carrion Vine, Heart of Wolverine, Spirit of Barbs and Oak Sage. Each Gust level cuts the cooldown by 0.2 seconds (wiki), so pick Gust if you want more mobility and Oak Sage if you want more life.
About these skill plans
- Leveling (level 30): 33 points = 29 from levels + 4 Normal quest points (Den of Evil, Radament, Izual). This follows Odealo's advice to level as Arctic Blast from the start: Arctic Blast is a level 1 skill and 'can serve as your main Damage skill through most of the campaign'. Cyclone Armor comes at 6, Twister and Gust at 12/18 as prerequisites and mobility, Tornado at 24 and Hurricane at 30. The exact per-level split is ours; Odealo gives priorities, not a point-by-point order.
- Early endgame (level 75): 86 points = 74 + 12 quest points. The four core skills are maxed, as in every planner and Odealo ('Max these core skills before spending heavily on utility'). Gust 4 matches Hiim's planner, and Heart of Wolverine starts the path to Oak Sage. Odealo players put the extra points into Gust instead.
- Endgame (Hiim's planner) (level 95): 106 points = 94 + 12, copied from Hiim's S14 'Arctic Blast/Hurricane' planner (clvl 95). The planner has no description. Our reading is that Oak Sage is for life and the 1-point summons (Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) Wolf, Dire Wolf, Grizzly, Solar Creeper) are meat shields and prerequisites. Odealo variant (clvl 94): Arctic Blast, Cyclone Armor, Tornado and Hurricane 20 each, Gust 15, Twister 5, and 1 point each in Poison Creeper, Carrion Vine, Heart of Wolverine, Spirit of Barbs and Oak Sage.
Dealing with immunities
Cold immunes are the build's main obstacle. The community answers, in order of cost:
- Tornado (maxed in every planner): physical damage, and since S14 it hits much more often (next-hit delay 25 -> 9 frames) with critical and deadly strike. Odealo: Tornado 'gives the Druid access to Physical Damage against enemies that are difficult to handle with Cold alone'.
- Arctic Blast's own debuff: -cold resistance while it hits (-25% at level 20, -1% per extra level, so roughly -45% around level 40 with +skills). The PD2 wiki says it can break cold immunity. In PD2, resistance reduction counts at half strength against immune monsters.
- Infinity (Polearm/Spear) on an Act 2 merc (Odealo's standard): Conviction lowers cold resistance and breaks immunities.
- Lower Resist procs: Medusa's Gaze (10% when struck) or an Act 1 Rogue with Pus Spitter (Odealo's budget option).
- -% enemy cold resistance gear: Nightwing's Veil, Frostburn, Shatterblade, Kira's Guardian and cold Rainbow Facets. Per the PD2 rules this gear only works after immunity is broken.
- Reroll or skip maps whose modifiers add cold immunity or extra cold resistance.
03Stats
Strength and Dexterity for gear, the rest into Vitality, no Energy. Hiim at clvl 95: 157 Strength / 69 Dexterity / 259 Vitality / 0 Energy points spent.
| Attribute | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Strength | Enough for your gear. Hiim's planner puts 157 points into Strength (172 total with the Druid's 15 base) and gets the rest from gear (Constricting Loop, Dracul's Grasp). Steel Carapace (Shadow Plate) needs 220 Strength, Medusa's Gaze 164 (Aegis 219 minus its -25% requirements), and Siggard's Staunch (Colossus Girdle) 185. |
| Dexterity | Enough for Frostwind (Cryptic Sword: 109 Dexterity). Hiim's planner puts 69 points into Dexterity (89 total) and gets the rest from Nightwing's Veil (+10-20 Dexterity). With a staff (Heart of the Oak) you need very little. |
| Vitality | Everything else (Odealo: 'Vitality is particularly valuable because Arctic Blast requires you to remain stationary while channeling'). Hiim's planner: 259 points. |
| Energy | None (Odealo; Hiim's planner: 0). Exception: Energy Shield variants built around Uldyssian's Awakening (Wuslwiz and Kaoz planners put about 280-310 points into Energy). This guide does not cover that variant. |
04Leveling
Leveling plan
Arctic Blast is a level 1 skill, and Odealo says the build 'can be leveled around his final playstyle surprisingly early', with Arctic Blast as 'your main Damage skill through most of the campaign'. The leveling timeline below is the Arctic Blast / Cold route of our Druid leveling guide (leveling/druid.json): its phases carry the skill points, gear, mercenary and tips for every stage, and its skill points match this build's skill tiers. Two ways to get here:
- Arctic Blast route (recommended for this build, Odealo; shown as the leveling timeline): level directly as Arctic Blast -- Cyclone Armor 6, Twister 12, Gust 18, Tornado 24, Hurricane 30. The steps below summarize it.
- Alternative: level as Fire (the Druid guide's main route), then respec: Fire carries you through Normal and Nightmare without any cold gear. Switch once Hurricane is available (clvl 30) and you have the gear for this build, using Akara's free respec for that difficulty or a Token of Absolution. See 'Respec' below.
Early gear priorities (Odealo): +Elemental Skills, mana sustain, FRW, resistances and enough FHR not to be interrupted while channeling. Use an Insight merc (Meditation) or an Act 1 Cold Rogue (Meditation) for mana.
Switching to your main skill: Arctic Blast route: Arctic Blast is your main skill from clvl 1, and Hurricane joins at 30. Fire main route (alternative): switch at clvl 30 or later, once Hurricane can be learned. Arctic Blast needs no special gear to start, so the respec mostly costs you the Fire-specific items (Leaf, Earthshaker, Mang Song's Lesson), which do nothing for cold.
Respec: Akara gives one free skill and stat reset per difficulty after the Den of Evil (Normal, Nightmare, Hell). A Token of Absolution (cube Twisted Essence of Suffering + Charged Essence of Hatred + Burning Essence of Terror + Festering Essence of Destruction; the essences drop from act bosses in Nightmare and Hell) gives extra resets. Coming from the Fire guide, the natural moments are Nightmare Akara at clvl 30+ (after Nightmare Den of Evil) or Hell Akara at Hell entry, once you have a Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) staff or Heart of the Oak, Frostburn and some +Elemental gear. Our leveling guide's general advice still applies: respec only when you hold the new build's core gear.
Level 1 to endgame: Arctic Blast / Cold (Arctic Blast -> Tornado -> Hurricane) route
Level 1–11Normal Act 1-2 Normal (Arctic Blast)
Arctic Blast is a level 1 skill, and Odealo says it 'can serve as your main Damage skill through most of the campaign': a channeled cold beam that hits everything in a short cone and, per the PD2 wiki, lowers enemy cold resistance while it hits. Put one point per level into it and the first point into Cyclone Armor at 6. Mana is the bottleneck: it costs 3-11 mana per second at levels 1-11, so buy mana potions, wear a mana ring and hire the Cold Rogue.Skill points- +10Arctic Blast

Skills
- Level 2-5: Arctic Blast +4 -- Your first skill point arrives at level 2; Arctic Blast is learnable from level 1.
- Level Den of Evil: Arctic Blast +1 -- Quest point (and Akara's free respec).
- Level 6: Cyclone Armor +1 -- Absorbs elemental damage; a 12% Arctic Blast synergy and the prerequisite for Twister/Gust.
- Level 7-11: Arctic Blast +5 -- 10 hard points at 11.
Stats
Mostly Vitality, a few points of Strength for gear around 10-12 (main route stat plan). No Energy: mana comes from gear, potions and the merc's aura.Mercenary
Act 1 Cold Rogue (Meditation aura): Arctic Blast is channeled and mana hungry at low level. In PD2 the Act 1 Cold Rogue carries a Meditation aura (wiki Mercenaries; Odealo's AB guide recommends fixing mana early), so hire her as soon as you can.Where to farm
- Act 1 Normal Countess (Forgotten Tower): Guaranteed runes; first source of Tal Rune, Eth Rune, Tir Rune and Ral Rune for Stealth and Leaf. Drops: Low runes (El Rune to about Ral Rune in Normal - vanilla table, not confirmed for PD2)
- Act 1 Normal Den of Evil, Cold Plains, Stony Field: Fast early XP; you do not need to farm, just clear as you go. Drops: Low runes, magic pelts
Quests
- Den of Evil (Act 1, must do): +1 skill point (and Akara's free respec). Do it first thing; the point goes into Firestorm.
- Sisters' Burial Grounds (Blood Raven) (Act 1, recommended): Rogue mercenary for free. Hire an Act 1 Cold Rogue afterwards: in PD2 she carries a Meditation aura.
- Tools of the Trade (Horadric Malus) (Act 1, recommended): Charsi imbue. Save the imbue for a good staff or a pelt to roll extra Elemental skills (rare result is random).
- Radament's Lair (Act 2, must do): +1 skill point. Usually done at 13-15, counted in phase 2.
Tips
- Channel in short bursts and step back; Arctic Blast keeps hitting everything in the cone, you do not need to aim at single monsters.
- Carry a full belt of mana potions; refills are cheap in Normal.
- Mistake: Hiring a Fire Rogue (Vigor) for this route: you want the Cold Rogue's Meditation for mana.
- Mistake: Skipping Den of Evil: you lose a skill point and the free respec.
Level 12–23Normal Act 2-5 Normal (Twister, Gust)
Keep Arctic Blast on its one point per level. Twister at 12 is the prerequisite for Tornado, Gust at 18 your mobility skill. Spare points go into Cyclone Armor, which absorbs elemental damage and is a 12% Arctic Blast synergy. Radament gives +1 point. Stealth at 17 adds FCR/FHR. - Hell's Forge (Act 4, recommended): Random rune. Rune table depends on difficulty.
- Siege on Harrogath (Larzuk) (Act 5, must do): Sockets an item. Save it for a 4-socket-capped staff (Battle Staff/Gnarled Staff) for the Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) staff, or for a Nightmare base. Socket count depends on item level (vanilla rule: ilvl 26-40 = max 4).
- Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act 5, recommended): Ral Rune + Ort Rune + Tal Rune (and a socketed item). These three runes are part of Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) and Insight.
- Prison of Ice (Anya) (Act 5, must do): +10 all resistances
Tips
- Use Gust to jump into position, then channel; the cooldown is long at 1 point, so do not waste it.
- Arctic Blast pushes nothing back: let the merc hold the front.
- Mistake: Leveling Twister beyond 1 point -- it is only the Tornado prerequisite here.
Level 24–30Nightmare Act 5 Normal into Nightmare (Tornado, Hurricane)
Arctic Blast reaches 20 with the Izual points. Tornado from 24 adds physical damage for cold-resistant monsters (Odealo) and is a 12% Arctic Blast synergy. Act 2 Defensive (Defiance): Insight at 27 gives him a Meditation aura (level 12-17), which fixes Arctic Blast's mana drain during leveling (the build's leveling merc setup).Tips

Tips
- Cold immunes appear in Nightmare: let the merc and Tornado (physical) handle them.
- Snowclash's +max cold resistance is defensive too -- Nightmare Act 5 has many cold attackers.
- Mistake: Spreading points into Tornado before Hurricane is maxed: Hurricane is the bigger synergy.

Tips
- Hell resistances drop by 100 compared to Normal: cap cold and lightning first, Hell Act 5 and the Ancients hit hard with both.
- Tornado and Hurricane deal damage around you while you channel Arctic Blast -- fight in the middle of packs, not at range.
- Mistake: Buying Heart of the Oak before your resistances are fixed: Odealo's priority is survival first in Hell.

Tips
- With Infinity (Polearm/Spear) on the merc, cold-immune packs become killable -- stay within his aura range.
- Hiim's 4 points in Gust are enough for the cooldown with FCR gear; Odealo's version pushes it further.
- Mistake: Spending these points on summons before Cyclone Armor is maxed: the four core skills come first (Odealo: 'Max these core skills before spending heavily on utility').
Level 76–95Hell maps (Hiim's Oak Sage layout)
Hiim's planner spends the late points on Spirit of Barbs 1 and Oak Sage 12 (life), plus 1 point each in Summon Ravens, Summon Spirit Wolf, Summon Dire Wolf, Summon Grizzly, Poison Creeper, Carrion Vine and Solar Creeper (meat shields and prerequisites; the planner gives no reason, this is our reading). Odealo instead puts the late points into Gust (about 15) and Twister (5). Alternative leveling builds
- Firestorm -> Molten Boulder -> Fissure/Volcano -> Armageddon (Fire Druid): Community route (Odealo pre-launch S14 Fire Druid guide): Firestorm early, Molten Boulder as main skill from level 6 because it has no cooldown and strong fire + physical damage, Fissure for area clear in open areas, Volcano 'as soon as possible' for elites and bosses, then invest heavily into Molten Boulder, Fissure, Volcano and Armageddon, which synergize each other. Gust becomes your mobility skill. No respec is needed before maps. Maxroll's (D2R) Fissure route is the common alternative: more Firestorm early, Fissure maxed first. If you stay Fire Elemental there is nothing to respec - the leveling points are the endgame points. Community timings for switching: Rabies - late Nightmare/early Hell (Odealo pre-launch S14 Rabies guide); Wind (Tornado/Hurricane) - around level 38, before Nightmare Mephisto (Maxroll, D2R route). Respec only once you hold the core gear for the next build.
- Summon Druid (Ravens, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield)/Dire Wolves, Grizzly, Oak Sage): S14 buffed Dire Wolves (base damage 33-38 -> 36-42, 57% life per level, physical pierce) and Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) Wolf life. Summons tank for you and need almost no gear, so this is the safest start, especially on Hardcore. The PD2 wiki starter guide and Odealo's pre-launch S14 Summoner guide both level directly through the Summoning tree with no respec; hiimpd2 lists Summons as an S14 Druid starter. Hardcore, new players, or if you plan to play the Summon Druid endgame. Slower clear than fire in Normal/Nightmare. Full level 1 -> endgame route: see the 'Summon' leveling route.
- Werewolf Fire Claws / Rabies: Fire Claws (level 24) was completely reworked in S14: its Firestorm trails no longer shotgun, travel 50% faster and hit much harder, and it is synergized by Molten Boulder and Armageddon (+24% each). Rabies is Top tier on the S14 solo list. Odealo's pre-launch S14 Rabies guide: level as Fire, respec into Rabies in late Nightmare or early Hell once you have basic Rabies gear.
- Twister / Tornado (Wind): S14 buffed Twister (more damage, hit delay 10 -> 9) and Tornado (hit delay 25 -> 9) and both now benefit from deadly/critical strike. Physical damage avoids elemental immunities. If you want to end as Twister/Wind Druid. Damage is weak before the synergies come online, so most players still level as fire and respec. Maxroll's (D2R) route levels as Fire/Fissure and respecs to Tornado/Hurricane around level 38 before Nightmare Mephisto; hiimpd2 lists Wind Elemental as an S14 Druid starter.
Respecs
- When to respec on this route: None needed on this route. Coming from the Fire main route instead: respec at clvl 30+ once Hurricane is available and you hold the cold core gear (Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) or Heart of the Oak, Frostburn, +Elemental items) -- Nightmare or Hell Akara, or a Token of Absolution.
- Free respecs: Akara offers one free skill and stat reset per difficulty after you complete the Den of Evil (standard D2 behaviour, PD2 keeps it). The Normal one is the most useful because you will never need it for this route.
- Token of Absolution: Cube Twisted Essence of Suffering (Andariel/Duriel), Charged Essence of Hatred (Mephisto), Burning Essence of Terror (Diablo) and Festering Essence of Destruction (Baal); in PD2 essences drop in Nightmare and Hell. Tokens are also cheap to trade.
Common leveling mistakes
- Ignoring mana early: Arctic Blast is channeled; without a mana ring, potions and a Meditation merc you stall.
- Spending points on utility before Arctic Blast, Hurricane, Tornado and Cyclone Armor are maxed (Odealo).
- Spreading points across all three trees early - the fire chain needs every point until the four core skills are maxed.
- Delaying Volcano - the community route adds it as soon as it unlocks.
- Choosing 3-socket bases for 2-rune words (Stealth, Leaf, Lore).
- Playing without a mana source: Insight on the Act 2 merc fixes mana.
- Forgetting that Molten Boulder/Volcano/Armageddon are half physical - they are your answer to fire immunes, not a reason to respec.
- Hiring an Act 2 'Holy Freeze' or 'Might' merc - neither exists in PD2 Act 2.
What is different in PD2
- Skill names in game: Fissure (internal name Eruption), Summon Dire Wolf (internal Summon Fenris), Carrion Vine (Cycle of Life), Solar Creeper (Vines), Werewolf/Werebear, Lycanthropy (Shape Shifting).
- Fissure S14: synergies 12% -> 14% per level, spawn delay 6 -> 5 frames, and the delay drops every 5 base levels instead of 10.
- Fissure and Volcano have a 13-frame (0.52 s) cooldown in PD2, so you weave Molten Boulder in between.
- Gust is a PD2 Druid mobility skill (level 18, needs Cyclone Armor); its cooldown falls from about 6.3 s at level 1 to 0.52 s at level 30+.
- Druid mana per level rose from 2 to 3 in S14.
- Mercenaries: Act 1 Cold Rogue has Meditation, Act 4 Ascendant (staves) has Amplify Damage (Dark) or Sanctuary (Light) variants; mercs get full XP from your kills in S14.
- Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) has a staff version: +2 all skills and 55% FHR instead of +1 and 25% FHR.
- Rune upgrades in S14 data: 3 runes up to Pul Rune, 2 runes from Pul Rune upward, no gems needed.
- S14 raised the maximum sockets of many armor bases from 2 to 3 (e.g. Splint Mail, Plate Mail, Field Plate, Ghost Armor, Serpentskin Armor, Demonhide Armor), which makes 3-rune armors like Rain easier; for Stealth you still need a base with exactly 2 sockets.

Charms
Every source agrees: Hellfire Torch and Annihilus first, then as many Nature's grand charms (+1 to Elemental Skills, druid only) as you can fit. Hiim's planner carries 8, Earl_Grey 9 (with FHR) and stal1nek 9 (with life). They raise Arctic Blast, Hurricane, Tornado, Cyclone Armor and Gust at once (Odealo). Odealo adds cold skill damage large charms for a damage-optimized inventory, and small charms with life, resistances, mana and FHR to reach the 56% FHR target. Hiim fills the rest with resistance + life small charms.
- Grand charms: +1 to Elemental Skills ('Nature's', druid only) with 12% FHR ('of Balance'): Earl_Grey, Kaoz; +1 to Elemental Skills ('Nature's') with +36-45 life ('of Vita'): stal1nek, Kaoz, Wuslwiz
- Large charms: +3% cold skill damage ('Numbing' prefix, clvl 42; 'Frigid' +2-3%): Odealo's 'Cold Skill Damage Large Charms' for an optimized setup
- Small charms: Life + all resistances ('Shimmering' prefix + 'of Vita' suffix): stal1nek, Kaoz, Hiim; Life + single resistance ('Emerald' poison, 'Amber' lightning, 'Ruby' fire + 'of Vita'): Hiim; Mana + life ('Serpent's ... of Vita'): Earl_Grey, Wuslwiz. Odealo: mana matters more than usual because Arctic Blast is channeled; 5% FHR ('of Balance') to hit FHR breakpoints (Odealo)
- Annihilus: +1 all skills, attributes, resistances (all planners).
- Hellfire Torch: A Druid torch: +3 Druid skills, attributes, resistances (all planners, Odealo).
Socket fillers
- weapon/helm/armor/shield after a sockets corruption (Frostwind, Nightwing's Veil, Steel Carapace, Spirit Ward): Rainbow Facet -- Cold Rainbow Facets: +% cold damage and -% enemy cold resistance per facet. The Level-Up and Death versions have the same stats. Used in Earl_Grey's, Wuslwiz's, Kaoz's and stal1nek's S14 planners.
- shield (Medusa's Gaze with sockets): Um Rune -- Earl_Grey's planner puts 3 Um Rune runes (resistances in a shield) into a socket-corrupted Medusa's Gaze.
- any socket where you have no facet: Magic jewel (+3-5% cold skill damage (prefix 'Numbing', new in S14; 'Frigid' +2-3%), Optional suffix: FHR or life) -- S14 added +2-5% elemental damage jewel prefixes (patch notes). This is a cheap socket filler; per the S14 data the cold one is called Numbing (+3-5%).
06Mercenary
Which mercenary
Act 2 -- Defensive (Defiance)
Aura: Defiance. Infinity (Polearm/Spear) adds Conviction, which lowers enemy cold resistance and defense
Odealo: 'An Act 2 Defiance Mercenary with Infinity (Polearm/Spear) is the strongest general-purpose partner for this Build. Conviction reduces enemy Cold Resistance and Defense, greatly improving Arctic Blast and Hurricane against resistant enemies'. Defiance also helps while you stand still and channel. Wuslwiz's S14 planner uses the same merc (Infinity (Polearm/Spear), Ferocity, Innocence). Before Infinity (Polearm/Spear), give him Insight: Meditation fixes Arctic Blast's mana drain during leveling. In PD2, Act 2 mercs only come with Defiance, Blessed Aim or Thorns; there is no Holy Freeze or Might Act 2 merc.
Alternatives
- Act 3 Lightning (Holy Shock aura; casts Lightning and Static Field): Hiim's planner and stal1nek's Hardcore planner both use the Act 3 Iron Wolf. Hiim's wears Skyfall (Vortex Orb), Exile in an ethereal Targe (Defiance aura), Flickering Flame in a Great Helm, Innocence in Sacred Armor, Occultist, String of Ears and Marrowwalk. Act 3 mercs can equip Sorceress orbs, Paladin shields and 1-handed swords (wiki). The planner gives no reason. Our reading: Exile brings Defiance and a Decrepify proc, and Static Field takes a chunk of monster life. S14 note: his Static Field now also lowers maximum life by 8%, and its targeting range dropped from 22 to 16.
- Act 1 Rogue with Pus Spitter: Odealo's budget option before Infinity (Polearm/Spear): Pus Spitter's frequent Lower Resist procs 'can carry the Build through early Mapping'. Item proc levels were adjusted in S14 so procs keep their old values.
- Act 1 Cold Rogue (Meditation aura): Kaoz's S14 planner uses the Meditation Rogue with the Ice runeword (Holy Freeze aura, cold pierce) and cold-pierce gear. Meditation also helps mana while leveling.

07Breakpoints
| Stat | Breakpoints | Aim for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCR (cast rate) | 04101930466899163 | 68% comfortable, 99% optional luxury (Odealo) | Druid (human form). Odealo: 'FCR does not directly increase Arctic Blast's Damage rate, so there is little reason to force a high breakpoint'. FCR makes Gust, Tornado and Hurricane casts faster. Hiim's gear: Medusa's Gaze 30-40 + Constricting Loop 20 + crafted amulet 10 = 60-70% (68% only with a 38+ roll on Medusa's; otherwise 46%) (approximate). In mid gear, Heart of the Oak (30) + Skin of the Vipermagi (30) + one 10% FCR ring = 70%, enough for 68% even with Frostburn instead of Magefist. |
| FHR (hit recovery) | 1-handed swinging weapons (Frostwind): 0/3/7/13/19/29/42/63/99/174/456; other weapons incl. staves (Heart of the Oak): 0/5/10/16/26/39/56/86/152/377 | Odealo: 39% comfortable, 56% target, 84-86% optional. These match the staff table; with Frostwind the equivalent steps are 42% and 63% | Druid (human form). Steel Carapace alone gives 40% (2% short of 42% with Frostwind, 1% over 39% with a staff). Earl_Grey reaches the next step with 12% FHR Nature's grand charms. Spirit's staff version gives 55% by itself while leveling. |
| FBR (block rate) | 061320325286174600 | Only for a block setup (Stormshield/Spirit Ward with max block, Odealo's Hardcore suggestion) | Druid (human form). Earl_Grey corrupts Frostburn and Aldur's Advance for FBR. Most planners ignore block. |
| FRW (run/walk) | — | Gust is the main movement skill. Gear adds FRW: Hiim's crafted Blood amulet has 10%, rare boots up to 40% ('of Acceleration'), Waterwalk 30% and Aldur's Advance 40%. Enigma adds 25% but is optional (Odealo). |
08Tips & Tricks
Tips
- Cast Hurricane before you engage. It pulses cold damage every 0.8 seconds in a 6-yard radius (wiki) and lasts long, so recast it only when it expires.
- Every Twister or Tornado cast cuts Gust's remaining cooldown by 0.52 seconds (wiki). Throw a Tornado or two at a pack and Gust comes back sooner.
- Arctic Blast's -cold resistance lasts only while the beam hits, plus 0.4 seconds. Keep the cone on the toughest monster instead of flicking it around.
- FCR does not speed up Arctic Blast's damage (Odealo). 68% FCR is plenty; spend the rest on FHR, life and +skills.
- Arctic Blast's range caps at 16 yards from skill level 13 (wiki). Stand back and let the cone do the work instead of channeling point-blank.
- Max Cyclone Armor: it is a 12% Arctic Blast synergy, and it absorbs more with every hard point in Tornado and Twister (+10 each).
- Mana: Druid mana per level went from +2 to +3 in S14. Frostburn now gives +20-40% max mana, and The Stone of Jordan adds a percentage of max mana. Before endgame, an Insight merc is the easy fix.
- Hiim keeps Call to Arms + Lidless Wall on weapon swap for Battle Orders. Precast it before every map.
- Nature's grand charms (+1 Elemental Skills) are the best charm upgrade: one charm raises all your Elemental skills.
- Corrupt Frostwind, Nightwing's Veil or Steel Carapace for sockets and fill them with cold Rainbow Facets (Earl_Grey, Wuslwiz, stal1nek planners).
- Cold immunes: switch to Tornado instead of channeling Arctic Blast into them, and let the merc help.
- Skip Leaf from the Fire leveling route: its +3 Fire Skills do nothing for cold skills. Earthshaker (+3-4 Elemental Skills, 20% FCR, clvl 43) from the same guide does work for this build.
Where to farm
- Sewers of Harrogath and other dense T1-T3 maps (clvl 80+): The benchmark map for this build on hiimpd2 (best S14 clear 2:49). Dense corridors suit the Arctic Blast cone and Hurricane.
- Corrupted Zones (Hell, rotating): Worldstone Shards (+50% from corrupted zones in S14) for the socket and +skill corruptions used by the planners (Frostwind, Nightwing's Veil, Steel Carapace).
- Tower Cellar (Countess), Nightmare and Hell: Runes for Spirit (Sword/Any Shield), Insight and Heart of the Oak. The cellar is area level 85 in Hell in PD2.
- Hell Cow Level / Chaos Sanctuary: Dense packs for experience on the way to 80 and maps.
- T1-T3 maps in general: S14 increases the chance of high-end affixes on items dropped in maps by tier (patch notes): rare boots, pelts and the class-item drop bonus for druids from the new map event.
Hardcore
There is a dedicated S14 Hardcore planner (stal1nek, 'Arctic/Hurricane - HC'). It keeps Arctic Blast, Tornado and Hurricane at 20, but leaves Cyclone Armor at 1 and puts 20 points into Summon Grizzly and 19 into Oak Sage. The Grizzly and the summons tank for you while you channel. Its gear: Shatterblade + Spirit Ward (both corrupted), Nightwing's Veil, an ethereal Steel Carapace, Snowclash and two Bul-Kathos' Wedding Bands (both with damage-reduction/PDR corruptions), Frostburn with a life corruption, Silkweave, Mara's Kaleidoscope, and an Act 3 Static Field merc with Exile (Defiance). Odealo suggests Stormshield with max block for 'a highly defensive or Hardcore setup'. General points: you stand still while channeling, so stack life (Vitality), aim for at least the 56% FHR step (63% with a 1-handed weapon), keep 75% resistances, and Gust out of bad spots early. Avoid map mods with extra elemental damage or reduced resistances. Neither source gives HC bossing advice.
09FAQ
About this build
Is Cold Elemental good in Season 14?
For mapping, yes: Top on hiimpd2's S14 solo list, with a 2:49 Sewers of Harrogath clear. In groups it is only Mid, and it is not on the bossing or starter lists.
Can it kill ubers (Diablo Clone, Rathma, Lucion)?
There is no community evidence. hiimpd2's S14 bossing tier list does not rate it for any of the three fights, and no source we found shows a kill. Use it to farm maps. For ubers, the Druid builds rated on that list (Maul, Fury, Bears, Rabies, Summoner, Fire, Wind) are the safer choice.
Should I level as Arctic Blast or follow the Fire leveling guide?
Odealo says Arctic Blast can be your main skill 'through most of the campaign', so leveling as Arctic Blast (the Druid guide's Arctic Blast / Cold route, shown as this page's leveling timeline) avoids a respec. The Druid guide's main route levels as Fire. That works too: respec at Nightmare or Hell Akara once you are clvl 30+ and have some cold-friendly gear (Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) staff or Heart of the Oak, Frostburn, +Elemental items).
Why does Hiim put points into summons?
His planner has no description. It shows Oak Sage 12 and 1 point each in Summon Ravens, Poison Creeper, Heart of Wolverine, Summon Spirit Wolf, Carrion Vine, Spirit of Barbs, Summon Dire Wolf, Solar Creeper and Summon Grizzly. Oak Sage is a life buff; the others are prerequisites or 1-point summons that distract monsters. Other S14 planners put 20 into Oak Sage, and Odealo puts the spare points into Gust and Twister instead.
How many points in Gust?
Hiim: 4. Odealo: about 15 hard points. Gust's cooldown is 6.32 seconds at level 1 and drops 0.2 seconds per level, down to a 0.52-second minimum (wiki), so +skills shorten it too. Every Tornado or Twister cast cuts another 0.52 seconds.
Which mercenary?
Odealo's standard: an Act 2 Defensive (Defiance) merc with Infinity (Polearm/Spear). Before that, Insight (Meditation) or an Act 1 Rogue with Pus Spitter (Lower Resist procs). Hiim's planner uses a luxury Act 3 Lightning merc with Skyfall, Exile, Flickering Flame and Innocence.
Frostwind or Heart of the Oak?
Heart of the Oak (+3 all skills, 30% FCR, resistances) is the progression weapon. Frostwind (+2-3 Cold Skills, +2 Arctic Blast) is the endgame weapon, usually with Medusa's Gaze or Spirit Ward. Sources disagree on its numbers: Odealo's prose says '+4-6 to Arctic Blast', its item box +2-3 Arctic Blast and +2 Cold Skills, and the wiki lists +2-3 Arctic Blast. The S14 data shows +2 Arctic Blast and +2-3 Cold Skills, so plan with that.
How much FCR and FHR do I need?
FCR: 68% comfortable, 99% luxury (Odealo). It does not speed up Arctic Blast's damage. FHR: 56% target with a staff (other-weapons table), or 63% with Frostwind (1-handed swinging table). 39%/42% is the minimum.
How do I handle cold immunes?
Tornado's physical damage first, then Arctic Blast's own -cold resistance debuff and the merc's Conviction (Infinity (Polearm/Spear)) or Lower Resist procs to break the immunity. Skip or reroll maps with cold-immunity modifiers until you have Infinity (Polearm/Spear).
Do I need Enigma?
No. Gust is your mobility (Odealo: Enigma's Blink charges are optional because 'the Build already has excellent mobility through a heavily invested Gust'). None of the five S14 planners we read uses Enigma.
I run out of mana. What helps?
Early: Insight or a Meditation Rogue, and mana potions. Later: The Stone of Jordan, Frostburn (+20-40% max mana), Heart of the Oak (+15% max mana), mana small charms, and life/mana after kill. S14 also raised Druid mana per level to +3.
Is there an Energy Shield version?
Yes. Wuslwiz's and Kaoz's S14 planners use Uldyssian's Awakening (it has an Energy Shield aura when equipped) with about 280-310 points in Energy and no Vitality. This guide covers the standard Vitality version (Hiim, Odealo).
Leveling questions
Is Fire still the best way to level a Druid in S14?
It is the most straightforward: the leveling skills are the endgame skills, Fissure was buffed in S14, and Leaf/Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) staves are cheap. Summon is safer on Hardcore; Wind/Cold are fine if you already know you will end there.
Firestorm or Molten Boulder first?
Firestorm for the first few levels, then Molten Boulder as your main skill from level 6 (Odealo's PD2 route). Maxroll's D2R route keeps more points in Firestorm early - both work, since both skills are synergies for Fissure.
Do I max Fissure first?
Not in the community PD2 route. Molten Boulder is the main skill, Fissure and Volcano are added as soon as they unlock, and all four core skills (Boulder, Fissure, Volcano, Armageddon) end up maxed by around level 77; Firestorm is finished last.
Does Leaf really work for a Druid?
Yes. Leaf gives '+3 to Fire Skills', a generic bonus that applies to Firestorm, Molten Boulder, Fissure, Volcano and Armageddon. The extra +3 Fire Bolt/Warmth lines are sorceress-only and do nothing for you.
How do I deal with fire immunes while leveling?
Molten Boulder, Volcano and Armageddon deal half physical damage, the merc kills the rest, and in Hell an Act 4 Dark merc (Amplify Damage) speeds that up. Skip fire-immune packs that are not in your way.
Which merc should I use?
Act 1 Rogue early, Act 2 Defensive (Defiance) with Insight from early Nightmare, and for endgame an Act 4 Dark Ascendant with an Infinity (Polearm/Spear) staff (Conviction + Amplify Damage). Budget endgame options: Act 1 with Pus Spitter or Act 2 with The Reaper's Toll.
When do I respec?
Only if you change builds, and only after you own the core items of the new build. Use Akara's free respec (once per difficulty) or a Token of Absolution.
General PD2 questions
How do I respec: Akara or a Token of Absolution?
Akara: after you finish Den of Evil, Akara offers one free full respec (skills and stats) per difficulty. Use the Normal one right after switching from your leveling build. Respeccing early is fine because you get more chances later.
Token of Absolution: cube one of each of the four essences:
- Twisted Essence of Suffering (Andariel ~16%, Duriel ~21%)
- Charged Essence of Hatred (Mephisto ~8.3%)
- Burning Essence of Terror (Diablo ~8.3%)
- Festering Essence of Destruction (Baal ~8.3%)
In PD2 the essences drop in Nightmare and Hell at the same rates, and they stack in the materials tab. Right-click the token to reset all skill and stat points. Tokens are also easy to buy from other players, so a respec is rarely a big deal. Experiment with builds freely.
Which mercenary should I hire?
PD2 reworked every merc. They have the same stats whichever difficulty you hire them in, and they all wear helm, armor, gloves, boots and belt. The PD2 merc table:
- Act 1 Rogue: Fire (Vigor aura), Cold (Meditation), Physical (Slow Movement). Bows and crossbows.
- Act 2 Desert Guard: Defensive (Defiance), Offensive (Blessed Aim), Combat (Thorns). Polearms, spears and javelins; one-handed weapons do double damage. There is no Might, Prayer or Holy Freeze Act 2 merc in PD2.
- Act 3 Iron Wolf: Fire (Cleansing), Cold (Prayer), Lightning (Holy Shock plus Static Field, which Season 14 reduced to 8% life).
- Act 4 Ascendant (new): Dark (casts Amplify Damage), Light (Sanctuary). Staves.
- Act 5 Barbarian: Combat (Might), Warcries (Battle Orders plus Battle Cry).
The usual default is an Act 2 Defiance merc in Insight (mana, and survives well). Physical builds love Might or Battle Orders, and casters often like Act 3 Cold for Prayer. Season 14 mercs get full XP from your kills, so they keep up easily.
What are breakpoints and which ones matter?
Diablo 2 animations run in whole frames, so Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR), Faster Block Rate and Increased Attack Speed only help once you reach the next threshold. Anything between thresholds is wasted. PD2 uses the vanilla FCR tables, for example:
- Sorceress FCR: 0/9/20/37/63/105/200. Frozen Orb and Chain Lightning use a slower table, 0/7/15/23/35/52/78/117/194.
- Paladin and Necromancer FCR: 0/9/18/30/48/75/125.
For most casters, 105% (Sorceress) or 75% (Paladin and Necromancer) is the main target. Get one or two FHR breakpoints for survival, such as 42-60% on a Sorceress. PD2 attack mechanics differ from vanilla: Whirlwind ignores IAS and hits at fixed intervals, Berserk uses Frenzy breakpoints, and item IAS has diminishing returns. Use the PD2 wiki breakpoint tables or an S14-aware planner for your class and weapon. Check a breakpoint before paying a lot for 5% more FCR.
Where do I get Stealth early, and how do I farm Tal Rune and Eth Rune?
Stealth is Tal Rune + Eth Rune in a 2-socket body armor and needs clvl 17. It gives 20% FCR, 20% FHR, 10% faster run/walk, +6 Dexterity and 3 magic damage reduction, which makes it the standard leveling armor for nearly every class.
- Base: any 2-socket body armor. Quilted Armor, Leather Armor and Hard Leather Armor (max 2 sockets) are cheap and light. Check Charsi and later vendors for socketed armor, or keep grey 2-socket drops from Act 1-2.
- Eth Rune: a common drop in Normal Act 1-2 (Eth Rune needs clvl 15). You can also cube 3 Nef Rune into 1 Eth Rune.
- Tal Rune: farm the Countess in the Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh, Act 1). Her rune table goes up to Ral Rune in Normal, so Tal Rune comes up regularly. Or cube 3 Ith Rune into 1 Tal Rune.
Save spare Tals: they also go into Ancients' Pledge, Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) and Insight. With Season 14's stash rework, runes stack in their own tab and upgrades need no key.
How does corruption with Worldstone Shards work?
Put an item and a Worldstone Shard in the cube and transmute. The result depends on the item:
- Normal (white/grey) items without sockets: 50% they gain sockets (up to the base maximum), 50% they become a random rare.
- Magic, rare, set or unique items that can have sockets (helm, chest, shield, weapon, quiver): 25% sockets (1-3 on armor, 2-4 on one-handed weapons, 3-6 on two-handed), 50% a corruption modifier, 25% "brick" into a random rare of the same type.
- Items that cannot have sockets (gloves, boots, belt, ring, amulet): 75% a corruption modifier, 25% brick.
Modifiers come in low, mid and high rarity tiers. High-rarity rolls are things like +1 all skills or 20% FCR on chests, +1 all skills on weapons, helms and shields, or +15% FRW on boots. A corrupted item can never be corrupted again, but most other recipes still work on it, including Puzzleboxes for sockets afterwards. Runewords count as regular socketed items and can't be corrupted. Make the base corrupt first.
What should I corrupt, and in which order?
Corrupt items where a 25% brick doesn't hurt much and a good roll is worth a lot:
- Runeword bases before you socket them. A white 0-socket base has a 50% chance to get max sockets, so it is the cheap way to make Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) shields, Insight polearms or 4-socket armor. A bricked white base costs almost nothing.
- Duplicate uniques or sets, or cheap ones you have spares of. Aim for sockets or high-rarity modifiers.
- Rings, amulets, gloves, boots and belts that are good but replaceable: 75% to gain a modifier.
- Annihilus uses the special Tainted Worldstone Shard from Rathma, not a normal shard.
For socketable uniques, the community advice is to corrupt first and Puzzlebox second. Shards are cheaper than Puzzleboxes, and boxing first doesn't lower the 25% brick chance, so you'd risk losing the box. Never corrupt your only copy of a build-defining item unless you can afford to lose it.
How do I reroll grand charms (or any magic item)?
Cube a magic item + 3 perfect gems (any type) to get a new magic item of the same base with the same item level and fresh random affixes. This is how players hunt skillers: grand charms with +1 to a class skill tab, ideally with life or faster hit recovery too. You can also reroll small and large charms or magic jewels. Notes:
- The item level never drops, so a high-ilvl grand charm (for example from Hell or maps) can be rerolled endlessly. A low-ilvl one can't roll high-tier affixes no matter how often you try.
- The recipe doesn't work on corrupted items or maps.
- Perfect gems drop only in Hell, but 3 flawless gems cube into a perfect (no key in Season 14), and chipped gems slowly upgrade too.
- Rares use a different recipe: rare + 3 Perfect Skulls makes a new rare, but at a lower item level (0.4 x clvl + 0.4 x ilvl).
How do maps work, and what do I need to open one?
Maps are PD2's endgame zones. To open one you need a level 80+ character who has killed the Hell Ancients. Right-click the map in your inventory while in Harrogath in Hell. Only one map or uber zone can be opened per game. The tiers:
- Tier 1: area level 87
- Tier 2: area level 88
- Tier 3: area level 89
- Tier 4 (dungeons): area level 92, made from a T3 map with a Horadrim Scarab and meant for strong groups
Your first maps come from Anya's Hell reward, rare drops in Hell and Nightmare Act 5, and corrupted zones. After that, maps mostly drop inside maps, with a chance of higher-tier maps. Each map has affixes that add density, experience and magic/gold find, plus monster modifiers. Before opening a map, check its immunities against your build. Map events (11% on normal, 22% magic, 33% rare maps) add bonus content such as the Treasure Fallen, the Dark Wanderer (extra Worldstone Shards) or Shadow of Mendeln (Splinter of the Void).
10Season 14 changes
S13 -> S14 changes that matter (PD2 wiki Patch Notes, hiimpd2 Season 14 page 'Cold Elemental: Buff'; calculations are approximate):
- Hurricane buffed: synergies 12% -> 13% per point. Max damage per level went up by 3 in every bracket (levels 2-8: 4 -> 7, 9-16: 8 -> 11, 17-22: 12 -> 15, 23-28: 16 -> 19, 29+: 20 -> 23). Example at level 20 with Arctic Blast and Tornado at 20: S13 165-190 x (1 + 4.8) = about 1,030 average per pulse; S14 165-247 x (1 + 5.2) = about 1,277, roughly +24%. At level 40 (with +skills) it is about +18%.
- Tornado: synergies 16% -> 14% (at Arctic Blast 20 + Hurricane 20 + Twister 1: +656% -> +574%, about 11% less per hit). In exchange, the next-hit delay dropped from 25 to 9 frames, critical and deadly strike now apply, and base damage went from 32-35 to 35-39 (undocumented, per the wiki). Overall a big upgrade for the physical side.
- Twister: more damage at every level, next-hit delay 10 -> 9 frames, critical and deadly strike apply. It has only 1 point here (2 to 5 with Odealo's split), so this matters little.
- Arctic Blast: no number changes. Only a fix for casting between it and Gust, Teleport, Blink and similar skills.
- Cyclone Armor, Gust: no S14 changes. Cyclone Armor's Twister/Tornado synergy was added in S13.
- Druid mana per level +2 -> +3: about +94 mana at clvl 95, which helps Arctic Blast's channel.
- Summons (Hiim's 1-point summons): Dire Wolves and Spirit (Sword/Any Shield) Wolves buffed, Grizzly's base damage lowered. Grizzly's enhanced damage now scales with hard points.
- Items: Frostburn's max mana went from +15-25% to +20-40% (its enhanced defense was removed). Dropped rare pelts and clubs can roll +3 Elemental Skills ('Gaea's'). Rare chests, helms and shields can roll +2 class skills. New +2-5% elemental damage jewel prefixes.
- Mercs: full experience from your kills. Act 3 Lightning merc's Static Field now also lowers max life by 8%, and its range went from 22 to 16. Lower Resist base values went up, but item procs (Medusa's Gaze, Pus Spitter) were re-leveled and keep their old values.
