01Overview
The first weeks of a ladder season decide how fast you reach maps. Everyone starts with an empty stash, so the farming that pays most early is the farming that gets your character stronger right now: runes for leveling runewords, a few key items, and enough resistances for Hell.
This route works for trading and self-found players alike. Your class leveling route, including which runewords to make and when, is in your build guide; this guide covers what to farm between quests and what to do with the loot.
02The route
| Stage | Farm | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | The Countess (Forgotten Tower, Act 1) between quests | Her rune table goes up to Ral Rune in Normal: the runes for Stealth and Malice. |
| Nightmare | The Countess again; Mephisto, Diablo and Baal for experience; the Cow Level once you have killed Baal | Her Nightmare table reaches Io Rune, enough for Spirit and Insight. Aim for clvl 65-70 before Hell. |
| Hell entry | Cows, Travincal, the Countess, Pindleskin, then the level 85 zones your build can clear | Gear, resistances and runes. Start collecting uber keys from the Hell Countess, Summoner and Nihlathak. |
| After Hell Baal | The corrupted zone of each game, level 85 zones, Hell Anya for your first map | Corrupted zones drop extra Worldstone Shards and tier 1 maps. Keep every map. |
| clvl 80+ | Tier 1 maps, white or magic first | Maps are where the real loot is. See the Mapping guide. |
Do the quests that pay forever
Den of Evil, Radament and Izual (skill points), Lam Esen's Tome (stat points) and Anya (+10 all resistances) in every difficulty. Anya's Hell reward also includes your first tier 1 map, and the Larzuk quest sockets one item per difficulty: save it for a good normal base.
03What to keep
Stash space is generous in Season 14 (separate tabs for maps, materials and one copy of every unique and set), so be greedy with the things that become gear later:
- Runes: all of them. Low runes cube up (3 into the next one through Lem Rune, 2 from Pul Rune upward, no gems or keys needed), so even duplicates are progress.
- White bases for the runewords your build needs: polearms for a mercenary Insight, 4-socket shields and swords for Spirit, body armor for your armor runeword. Unsocketed white bases are fine: a Worldstone Shard gives them maximum sockets half the time.
- Jewels and perfect gems: they are the extra ingredients for map orbs, crafting and rerolls.
- Charms from high-level areas: a grand charm from an area level 85 zone or a map can be rerolled into a skiller.
- Worldstone Shards, uber keys and essences: the currency of the endgame, whether you use them or trade them.
- Unique and set items you don't use: the Discovery tab tracks one of each, and spares are corruption fodder or trade stock.
04Self-found toolkit
Without trading, your upgrades come from the cube, the gamble screen and shards. These are the tools worth using early.
| Tool | How | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting | Magic or rare item of the slot + Jewel + a specific rune + a perfect gem | Caster amulets, belts and gloves (Faster Cast Rate), Blood gloves (Crushing Blow and life leech) and Brilliant amulets (attributes and resistances). Look up recipes on the recipes page. |
| Gambling | Buy unidentified items from vendors with gold; the item level is your character level -5 to +4 | Amulets, rings and circlets as crafting bases. Use the refresh button to cycle the stock. |
| Magic reroll | Magic item + 3 perfect gems | New affixes with the same item level: grand charm skillers, magic jewels, small charms. |
| Rare reroll | Rare item + 3 Perfect Skulls | A new rare on the same base, at a lower item level. |
| Corruption | Item + Worldstone Shard | White bases (50% maximum sockets, 50% a random rare) and spare jewelry, gloves, boots and belts (75% a modifier). |
| Sockets | Larzuk quest, Larzuk's Malus (bought from Larzuk), socket recipes, Larzuk's Puzzlepiece and Larzuk's Puzzlebox | Socketing uniques, rares and bases; only the Puzzlebox works on uniques and sets. |
| Upgrades | Rune + rune + perfect gem recipes | Raising a unique, set, rare or crafted item to its exceptional or elite base for more defense or damage and more sockets. |
Crafting at the right level
A crafted item's level is half your character level plus half the base's item level (both rounded down), and the best affixes need a high item level. Craft your early Caster and Blood items as soon as they help, but save the big rolls for later: a clvl 88 character crafting a gambled amulet reaches item level 90, the minimum for +2 class skills.
Corrupt in the right order
Corruption cannot be undone, and a quarter of corruptions on magic, rare, set or unique items turn the item into a random rare. Corrupt runeword bases before you socket runes into them (runewords cannot be corrupted), corrupt spare copies first, and never corrupt your only build-defining item. For socketable uniques, corrupt first and add sockets with a Puzzlebox afterwards, so a bad roll does not waste the box.
05Early ladder trading
If you trade, the start of the season is when most items are worth the most:
- High runes buy the most in the first weeks; their value drops as supply grows. If you find one early, it buys a lot of gear.
- Uber ingredients, shards and essences always sell, because every boss killer and crafter needs them.
- Price check on the official trade site before you sell, and pick the right ladder, softcore or hardcore filter: the economies are separate.
06FAQ
Should I farm Hell Cows or level 85 zones first?
Cows first if your character is still weak or needs bases: they have no immunities and drop a lot of white items. Move to level 85 zones once you kill Hell monsters quickly, because only they (and corrupted zones and maps) can drop every item in the game.
Can I respec if my leveling build is not the build I want?
Yes. Akara gives one free respec per difficulty after Den of Evil, and a Token of Absolution cubed from the four essences resets everything again. Plan your switch around your gear, not your level; your build guide lists what you need.
Is self-found much harder than trading in PD2?
Less than in the original game. A solo game already drops like a five-player vanilla game, rune upgrades are cheap, and crafting, rerolls and corruption let you build gear from common drops. Expect the same route, just a little slower for the expensive pieces.
