Physical Zealot Paladin (Zeal / Fanaticism) -- PD2 Season 14 Guide

01Overview

Season 14 rating

hiimpd2 S14 solo: Physical Zeal = Decent, Vengeance 1H = Decent (Sacrifice variants are Top). 'Zeal/Vengeance hybrid' is not listed.
No established PD2 guide plays zeal and vengeance together as one endgame build. hiimpd2's S14 list has 'Physical Zeal' and 'Vengeance 1H' as two separate builds (both Decent). The only community 'Zealer to Vengeance' guide (naomino, S11) levels as a Zealer through Normal and Nightmare and then fully respecs into a vengeance/conviction build for Hell. The mechanics explain why: Zeal's synergy is sacrifice (+20% per level) and Vengeance's synergies are holy fire/Freeze/Shock and conviction. Points split between the two halves strengthen neither. This guide therefore covers the community-standard Physical Zealer (Odealo pre-launch S14 Zealer, PD2 wiki Fanazealot, Zagdem's Travincal Zealer): max zeal, sacrifice, fanaticism and holy shield, with the single prerequisite point in vengeance and a few points in joust. If you want vengeance as your main attack, follow the hiimpd2 'Vengeance 1H' build or naomino's respec path (FAQ).

Summary

The Zealot (Zealer, 'Fanazealot') is the classic melee Paladin and a long-standing PD2 community build, from Maddinsche's Fanazealot uber guide to the current Odealo pre-launch S14 Zealer guide. zeal is your main attack. In PD2 it is a level 1 skill that swings 3 times per activation, hits up to 3 adjacent targets and grows melee splash radius by +20/+40/+60% on its hits. sacrifice is maxed for its +20% zeal damage per level. It also works as a single-target attack (180% +30% per level, +25% per hard level of fanaticism and redemption). In S14 it costs a flat 3% of your maximum life per hit, and monsters it kills explode for 5% of their life + 125% of the overkill damage. fanaticism is the core aura: attack speed (~35% at level 20), attack rating and 335% damage at level 20. holy shield plus Dexterity gets you to 75% block. joust (which needs one point in vengeance) is the mapping mobility tool.
What happened to 'Vengeance'? No proven PD2 build plays zeal and vengeance side by side (see Viability). In this guide vengeance is the 1-point prerequisite for joust. Since it adds 100% of weapon damage as fire, cold and lightning, you can also click it on a stone-skin pack in an emergency. If you want a real vengeance build, the community route is to level as this Zealer and respec into vengeance/conviction for Hell (naomino's S11 guide).
Damage type: physical. Strengths: excellent single-target and elite killing, strong life leech, max block. Weaknesses: physical immunes, attack rating requirements, melee positioning for pack clearing. hiimpd2 S14 rates Physical zeal as Decent for solo play.

What works

  • zeal is available at level 1 and the build 'can be leveled directly as a physical melee build from the beginning' (Odealo), with no respec needed
  • fanaticism gives attack speed, attack rating and a huge damage bonus in one aura
  • holy shield plus Dexterity reaches the 75% block cap: one of the safest melee setups
  • One of the best boss and elite killers; strong life leech sustain during continuous zeal attacks (Odealo)
  • joust gives teleport-like mobility for mapping (Odealo recommends ~5 hard points)
  • Scales from cheap leveling runewords (Runeword134, Runeword81, Runeword55) to Runeword69 / Runeword20 at the top end

What to plan around

  • Decent tier, not Top: pack clearing depends on melee positioning and splash coverage (Odealo)
  • Physical immunes need amplify damage sources, crushing blow or your merc; the 1-point vengeance is only an emergency button
  • Needs high attack rating (Odealo: 8,000-10,000+ for comfortable endgame) and the right IAS breakpoint
  • sacrifice costs 3% max life per hit in S14 and that cannot be mitigated, so life leech is mandatory (Fanazealot: 15%+)
  • Melee in dangerous maps: curses, physical reflect and stuns hurt more than for casters

Playstyle

Keep fanaticism and holy shield up at all times. Spend almost all combat time inside packs using zeal, joust between packs, and switch to sacrifice for bosses once your leech can carry it (Odealo, Fanazealot).
Rotation
  • Pre-buff holy shield (300 s + 5 s per level) and refresh it before every new area or boss.
  • joust onto the next pack: it teleports you to the target, hits it and gives a short movement speed boost.
  • Hold zeal on the densest spot so its 3 swings and splash hit as many monsters as possible.
  • Use sacrifice on bosses and tough single targets once you have ~15% life leech. Each hit costs 3% max life.
  • Stone skin (physical immune) packs: let the merc and your amplify damage procs work, or click your 1-point vengeance as a fallback. Skip them if they are slow.
  • joust out of bad spots when the cooldown is ready instead of walking.
Positioning: Stand where up to 3 monsters are adjacent to your target so Zeal's multi-target hits and splash land on all of them. Use corridors and doorways so the pack has to come to you and only a few can attack at once. holy shield block works against melee and ranged physical attacks but not against spells, so kill casters (shamans, Oblivion Knights, map casters) first.
Bossing: sacrifice is the boss button: at sacrifice 20 + fanaticism 20 it reaches 1,250% skill damage (750% + 25% per hard fanaticism level), compared to Zeal's ~905% (505% + 400% from sacrifice) spread over 3 swings. Every hit costs 3% max life, so keep life leech at 15%+ (Fanazealot). amplify damage sources (Headhunter's Glory, Atma's Scarab, the merc's The Gavel of Pain / The Cranium Basher) pay off a lot on bosses (Odealo). For ubers, Fanazealot relies on max block plus very high leech.
Mapping: joust to pack, zeal, joust to next pack (Odealo). Splash and sacrifice corpse explosions help with trash. Pick dense melee-heavy maps; avoid physical-immune-heavy maps and maps with physical reflect or increased monster physical resistance.

02Skills

Loading skill tree…

Skill order

  • zeal from level 1, might for the aura
  • 1 point sacrifice at clvl 6, then 'spare points into Sacrifice' alongside zeal (Odealo)
  • 1 point each smite, charge, blessed aim, concentration, holy shield on the way (prerequisites / utility)
  • 1 point vengeance (clvl 18) and joust (clvl 24)
  • fanaticism at clvl 30: once unlocked it becomes your main aura and 'one of the highest priorities' (Odealo)
  • Max zeal and sacrifice
  • Max holy shield (Hell / maps)
  • joust to ~5 hard points
  • Spare points: blessed aim (AR), salvation 1, or resist auras

Synergies

All numbers below come from the S14 Skills.txt in our dataset.
  • zeal: +30% damage at level 1, +25% per level (505% at 20), +35% / +20% per level attack rating, max 3 targets. Synergy: sacrifice +20% damage per hard level, so 20 points of sacrifice add +400% to zeal. zeal also raises your melee splash radius by +20/40/60% on its three hits.
  • sacrifice: +180% damage, +30% per level (750% at 20). Synergies: fanaticism +25% and redemption +25% per hard level. In S14 it costs 3% of your max life per hit. Monsters killed by it explode for 5% of their max life + 125% of the overkill damage, radius min(4 + level/3, 10).
  • fanaticism: passive damage 50% + 15% per level (335% at 20). Party aura gives half of that, plus attack speed scaling from 10% to 40% with diminishing returns (~35% at level 20, ~37% at level 28) and +attack rating.
  • vengeance: adds 100% of most weapon damage as fire, cold and lightning each. +5% elemental damage at level 1, +2% per level. Chain chance 22% + 2% per level (max 95%). Huge attack rating bonus (+120%, +18% per level). Synergies: holy fire, holy freeze, holy shock and conviction, +2% each per hard level. That is too small to be worth points in this build.
  • joust: +40% damage +8% per level, crit chance 10% + 2% per level, movement speed buff (3 + 2 per level, max 65%) for 2 seconds. Cooldown is max(104 - 2.5 x level, 38) frames, i.e. ~4 s at level 1 down to ~1.5 s at level 26+. Item reductions come on top: Alma Negra 13 frames (0.5 s), Leoric's Mithril Blade 0.75 s.
  • holy shield: block bonus scales from 5% toward 40% with diminishing returns (~34% at level 20, ~37% at level 28), +25% defense +10% per level, lasts 300 s + 5 s per level. defiance adds +15% defense per hard level to it.
  • blessed aim hard points: besides being the concentration/fanaticism prerequisite, its passive in our S14 data reduces enemy defense per hard level, so extra points help attack rating (Odealo: put more into utility auras only if you need AR).
  • salvation (1 point, Fanazealot) is used as a quick resistance aura when needed.

About these skill plans

  • Leveling (start of Nightmare) (level 30): 33 hard points = 29 levels + 4 Normal quest points (Den of Evil, Radament, Izual x2); the Nightmare Den of Evil point adds a 34th. Matches the community leveling skill sets (naomino: zeal, sacrifice, vengeance 1, joust 1, might/blessed aim/concentration 1, fanaticism; Odealo: zeal first, early sacrifice, one-point utility auras, fanaticism at unlock). holy shield 1 point for the block bonus.
  • Early endgame (Hell / first maps) (level 75): 86 hard points = 74 + 12 quest points. zeal, sacrifice and fanaticism maxed (Odealo, Fanazealot), joust at ~5 hard points (Odealo), the rest in holy shield, which 'becomes increasingly important as you move into Hell and Maps' (Odealo).
  • Endgame (T3 maps / ubers) (level 90): 101 hard points = 89 + 12 quest points. Core per Odealo S14: max zeal, sacrifice, fanaticism and holy shield, ~5 joust, prerequisites at 1. Fanazealot adds salvation 1. Its suggested places for the spare points are blessed aim, joust, resist auras and holy shield/defiance. Here the spare 9 points go into blessed aim for attack rating (Odealo: extra utility points only if your gear needs AR). Equally community-backed alternatives: more joust, or ~10 points each in resist fire / resist lightning for +max resistance (Zagdem's Travincal Zealer).

Dealing with immunities

Physical immunes are the Zealer's weak point. Community answers (Odealo):
  • amplify damage from Headhunter's Glory, Atma's Scarab, or the Act 5 merc's The Cranium Basher / The Gavel of Pain. In S14 amplify damage is a physical-resistance reduction (-15% base per the patch notes), so it helps a lot against resistant monsters. Whether it breaks full immunity in PD2 is unverified.
  • Deadly strike and crushing blow (Guillaume's Face, Gorerider, Runeword20, Runeword69) for damage against tough targets.
  • Your merc kills what you cannot.
  • vengeance (your 1 prerequisite point) adds 100% of weapon damage as fire, cold and lightning, so it does hurt stone skins. At 1 point plus +skills, treat it as an emergency button, not a plan. Players who want vengeance as the real answer play the separate vengeance 1H build (see Viability / FAQ).
Elemental immunes do not matter: your damage is physical.

03Stats

Str for gear, Dex for 75% block with holy shield, everything else Vitality, no Energy. This is the standard Zealer distribution in every community guide we found.
AttributeRecommendation
StrengthEnough for gear only (Odealo, Fanazealot). Fanazealot's level 90 reference: 103 Strength, enough for utp + Runeword69 in a 7cr. Heavier bases (7wa 138, 7bs 142, pac 109) need more; count +Str on gear first.
DexterityEnough for 75% max block with holy shield active (Odealo, Fanazealot: 136+ at clvl 90 with Herald of Zakarum). Cast holy shield before you check block on the character sheet. Block chance rises with Dexterity and falls with character level (vanilla formula: (shield block + bonuses) x (Dex - 15) / (2 x clvl), capped at 75%), so re-check as you level.
VitalityAll remaining points.
Energy0 (Odealo, Fanazealot).

04Leveling

Leveling plan

Community route: level directly as a Zealer from level 1 (Odealo: 'Start investing into zeal as soon as possible and use it as your main attack throughout progression'). Early spare points go into sacrifice, one-point utility auras come as they unlock, and fanaticism is the priority from clvl 30 until maxed. holy shield is maxed in Hell. Gear follows the standard PD2 melee leveling runewords (Runeword134, Runeword81, Runeword133, Runeword1, Runeword75, Runeword55; Odealo starter items). Hire an Act 2 defiance merc with Runeword62 while leveling (naomino; Odealo). Farm Nightmare Chaos until ~65 and Hell Travincal from ~50-60 (Zagdem). vengeance-curious players can follow naomino's route: level as this Zealer through Normal and Nightmare, then respec to vengeance/conviction for Hell.
Switching to your main skill: No switch: zeal is the main skill from level 1 (Odealo). Power spike at clvl 30 with fanaticism.
Respec: No respec needed for this build. Use Akara's free respec (once per difficulty after Den of Evil) to fix mistakes. Community alternative: naomino's 'Zealer to Vengeance' guide respecs the whole character to vengeance (max) + holy freeze/holy shock/conviction (max) + holy fire 10 at the start of Hell. That respec, or any later one, needs a Token of Absolution (tes + ceh + bet + fed) once the free one is used.

Level 1 to endgame

  1. Level 1–12Normal

    Normal Act 1-2

zeal and might at levels 1-2, then zeal every level. Den of Evil first. 1 point in smite (stun, prerequisite for charge/holy shield). From level 6, 1 point in sacrifice, then spare points into sacrifice (Odealo). Weapon: Runeword134 (r03 + r01, clvl 13) or Runeword81 (r06 + r01 + r05, clvl 15) (Odealo starter items). Strength for gear, rest Vitality. Farm Normal Countess for r07/r05 (Runeword133 at 17).

    Where to farm

    Quests

    • Den of Evil (Act 1, must do): +1 skill point and Akara's free respec for this difficulty. Clear it as soon as you reach the Blood Moor. Keep the respec unused; you need it at the end of Normal.
    • Sisters' Burial Grounds (Blood Raven) (Act 1, must do): Free Rogue mercenary. Hire a Fire Rogue: in PD2 she carries a vigor aura (run speed) and fire arrows.
    • Tools of the Trade (Charsi) (Act 1, recommended): Imbue one normal item into a rare. Imbue a Scepter or wsp for a chance at Paladin skills, or a helm/armor. Saving it for later is fine.
    • Sisters to the Slaughter (Andariel) (Act 1, must do): Act 2 access. Bring antidote potions or poison resistance.
  2. Level 12–24Normal

    Normal Act 2-5

One point each in charge and blessed aim (12), concentration, holy shield and vengeance (18), joust (24). These match the single-point skills in naomino's leveling allocation. charge is great for travel early; vengeance is mostly the joust prerequisite. Keep adding zeal and sacrifice. Gear: Runeword133, Runeword1 (21), Runeword88. Hire an Act 2 defiance merc and give him Runeword62 as soon as you have the runes (naomino; Odealo starter items). 'Rescue on Mount Arreat' gives r07 + r09 + r08.

  3. Level 24–30Nightmare

    Nightmare Act 1-2

Nightmare Den of Evil (+1). At clvl 30 put 1 point in fanaticism and switch to it. Odealo: once unlocked, fanaticism 'should become your main Aura and one of the highest priorities'. Build Runeword55 (27) and Runeword75 (27). Aim for 75% resistances (naomino: 'Get 75% resists' before anything else).
    Skill points

    2. +3zeal
    3. +3sacrifice

    Where to farm

    • Den of Evil (Nightmare) (Act 1, must do): +1 skill point and a new free respec for Nightmare. You get one free Akara respec per difficulty. Keep this one as a safety net.
    • Radament's Lair (Nightmare) (Act 2, must do): +1 skill point
    • Lam Esen's Tome (Nightmare) (Act 3, must do): +5 stat points
  4. Level 30–60Nightmare

    Nightmare -> early Hell

Max fanaticism, then finish zeal and sacrifice ('The combination of zeal and fanaticism ... carry the Build comfortably through Nightmare', Odealo). Get life leech before Hell. Zagdem recommends Nightmare Chaos farming until ~65 (depending on your skill levels) and Hell Travincal from 50-60 once you have cannot be frozen and a decent merc. naomino suggests Mephisto runs for unique upgrades. If you want the vengeance version, this is where naomino respecs (Hell entry): vengeance max + conviction/holy freeze/holy shock max, zeal/sacrifice 1 (that is the separate 'Vengeance 1H' build on hiimpd2).
    Skill points

Finish holy shield, then spend spare points on blessed aim (attack rating) and salvation 1. Fanazealot names blessed aim, joust, resist auras or holy shield/defiance as the spare-point options. Maps open at clvl 80 after killing the Hell Ancients.
    Skill points
    1. +5holy shield
    2. +9blessed aim
    3. +1salvation

Other ways to level

  • Holy Fire melee (1-18) -> Akara respec into Blessed Hammer at clvl 19: This is the most common community route (Maxroll respecs at 19 after Act 3, Icy Veins at 18). holy fire is an aura that damages every monster around you and adds fire damage to your hits, and resist fire is its synergy, so it carries Act 1-3 Normal with any weapon. At the respec blessed hammer can only hold 2 hard points (a skill takes at most one point per level above its requirement), so the community layout stacks blessed aim (clvl 12 skill, already up to 8) as synergy and then adds one Hammer point every level from 20 to 37. Hammer deals magic damage that almost nothing in Normal-Hell resists, and in S14 the hammers phase through walls. Community route: once, at clvl 19 (Maxroll; Icy Veins says 18), from holy fire melee into blessed hammer with Akara's free Normal respec. Keep the Nightmare and Hell free respecs as a safety net.
  • Later respec (end of Normal, clvl 24-28): Keep holy fire + zeal through Normal and respec once Hammer can hold about 7 points. Some players prefer this because holy fire is still very strong in Normal Act 4-5; the cost is slower leveling of Hammer itself. Not the most common route. Your holy fire is killing fast and you lack Runeword130/Runeword133 for casting speed at 19.
  • Holy Fire Sacrifice / Physical Sacrifice / Light Sacrifice: hiimpd2 lists Light, Physical and holy fire sacrifice as Top tier for S14 solo mapping. You already level with zeal and holy fire, so you just add sacrifice (clvl 6, needs zeal). Each sacrifice level gives zeal +20% damage, and sacrifice gets +25% per level from redemption and fanaticism. In S14 each sacrifice hit costs a flat 3% of maximum life, so life leech is mandatory and you need a prayer/redemption or leech plan. Your target endgame is a melee sacrifice Paladin. Keep the holy fire points, never respec, and add sacrifice/fanaticism/redemption instead of Hammer.
  • Zealot / Auradin (Charge + Holy Fire): Physical zeal (fanaticism + might/sacrifice) and Auradins that stack fire auras (holy fire plus items like Runeword48, Runeword27) both start from the exact same early game. charge (clvl 12, needs smite) adds a gap closer. You want a melee endgame. See the separate Zealot and vengeance build guides for the late layout.
  • Holy Bolt / Fist of the Heavens / Holy Nova caster: In PD2, holy bolt damages all enemies, not just undead (the in-game text reads 'a bolt of divine energy that damages enemies or heals allies'). It pierces and fires a second bolt at level 15 and a third at 25. holy light (12), fist of the heavens (24, lightning plus seeking holy bolts that were reworked in S14 to damage everything they pierce) and holy nova (30, 4 s cooldown) all synergize with each other at 10-15% per level. hiimpd2 rates holy bolt/FoH as Mid for solo mapping, and its starter page lists it for Chaos, early maps and key farming. You enjoy a ranged caster from level 1 and plan to stay a holy bolt/FoH/Nova Paladin. It is mana-hungry early, so bring an Act 1 Cold Rogue (meditation aura).

Respecs

  • Free respecs: Akara offers one free full respec per difficulty after you complete the Den of Evil in that difficulty. You can use the Normal one any time while you are still in Normal.
  • Token of Absolution: Cube tes + ceh + bet + fed into a Token of Absolution. In PD2 the essences drop from the act bosses in Nightmare and Hell (Andariel/Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo, Baal).

Charms

Hellfire Torch and Annihilus are mandatory at the end (Odealo, Fanazealot). Fill the rest with life charms, plus FHR/resistance small charms to cover gear gaps (Fanazealot). Grand charms: max damage/AR or Paladin Combat Skills skillers. Odealo calls both viable, with damage/AR favoured on well-geared characters.
  • Grand charms: +max damage / +attack rating (with life if possible); +1 Paladin Combat Skills (skiller), ideally with life
  • Large charms: Not used in the community guides (except the Hellfire Torch, which is a large charm)
  • Small charms: +life (Fanazealot's default filler); +life / FHR or resistances where gear lacks them; +attack rating / max damage (Odealo filler)
  • Annihilus: +1 all skills, stats, all res. Mandatory (Odealo, Fanazealot).
  • Hellfire Torch: Paladin roll. Mandatory (Odealo, Fanazealot).

Socket fillers

  • weapon: jew -- ED / IAS jewels (Odealo: in Schaefer's Hammer to hit the zeal breakpoint).
  • helm: jew -- 40% ED jewels (Fanazealot: 3x 40% ED in Guillaume's Face). Use IAS/ED jewels if you still need IAS.
  • shield: jew -- 40% ED jewels in Herald of Zakarum (Fanazealot).
  • weapon: r13 -- +20% IAS in weapons (S14 data). Our suggestion if a socketed weapon is just below the breakpoint.
  • shield: r22 -- +22 all res in shields (S14 data). Our suggestion for fixing resistances.

06Mercenary

Which mercenary

Act 5 -- Barbarian, Combat type (Might aura)
Aura: Might
Odealo's pre-launch S14 Zealer guide recommends the Act 5 might merc. might stacks with your fanaticism (different auras), and an amplify damage weapon (The Cranium Basher or The Gavel of Pain) helps 'against Physical-resistant and immune enemies'. Note: PD2 Act 2 mercs are defiance, blessed aim and thorns only. There is no Act 2 might or holy freeze merc, so the old guide's recommendation was impossible.
Alternatives
  • Act 2 Desert Guard, Defensive (Defiance) with Insight: naomino's budget Zealer levels with an Act 2 defiance merc carrying Runeword62 (meditation aura for your mana). Odealo's starter-items guide also recommends Runeword62 on the Act 2 merc. Good while leveling; switch to the Act 5 might merc for Hell.
  • Act 5 Barbarian, Warcries type (Battle Orders / Battle Cry): Zagdem's Travincal Zealer uses the Act 5 battle orders merc (with Djinnslayer) as the best option for Travincal farming: BO adds life and mana, and the merc tanks Frost Novas.

07Breakpoints

StatBreakpointsAim forNotes
FCR (cast rate)0918304875125NonePaladin. FCR does nothing for this build except speed up holy shield recasts. Do not spend gear slots on it.
FHR (hit recovery)071527488620027% minimum (Odealo baseline; Fanazealot's 6-frame target), 48% recommended (Odealo; Fanazealot's 'ideally 5 frames')Paladin (one-handed weapons, i.e. not spear/staff). Runeword133 (20), Guillaume's Face (30), FHR small charms. Getting stunlocked is the main cause of melee deaths.
IAS (attack speed)Zeal hits 1-2, Total Attack Speed: -20 / -12 / 0 / 17 / 41 / 75. Zeal hit 3: -20 / -16 / -11 / -6 / 0 / 8 / 16 / 25 / 37 / 50 / 67 (PD2 wiki, Multi-Hit Skills table)Fastest practical zeal breakpoint for your weapon (Odealo); Fanazealot: 'reach the IAS cap'. Per the PD2 wiki table that is Total Attack Speed 75 for 1H swinging weapons.Paladin, Zeal (1H swinging weapons: swords, axes, maces, scepters). PD2 lists zeal breakpoints as Total Attack Speed = effective item IAS + skill IAS - weapon speed modifier (WSM). Effective item IAS = 120 x IAS / (120 + IAS), so item IAS has diminishing returns. fanaticism provides skill IAS: ~35% at level 20, ~37% at level 28 (10% -> 40% with diminishing returns). Worked examples with fanaticism ~37 and our formula: 7cr (WSM -30) needs only about 9% item IAS for 75. 7bs / crs (WSM 0) need about 56% item IAS (e.g. Highlord's Wrath 20 + Nosferatu's Coil 20 + IAS jewels). Ethereal 7wa (Death; WSM 0) also needs about 56%. Always double-check in the PD2 wiki breakpoint table or an attack speed calculator with your exact weapon and fanaticism level. Thrusting weapons and 2H weapons use different zeal tables.
FBR (block rate)0 / 86 (Holy Shield active); without Holy Shield: 0/13/32/86/600Not needed. Fanazealot: 2-frame block with holy shield (86% FBR for the last frame).Paladin with Holy Shield. Per the PD2 wiki breakpoint page. This differs from the vanilla table (0/4/11/15/27/48/86). Do not chase FBR on a Zealer. Spend the affix budget on IAS, FHR and leech.
FRW (run/walk)—Not a breakpoint stat. 30% FRW boots (Gorerider, Tearhaunch) plus Joust's short movement speed buff.
Block—75% with holy shield active (Odealo, Fanazealot).
Life leech—15%+ minimum, 18%+ high-end (Fanazealot). Attack rating 8,000-10,000+ for comfortable endgame (Odealo).

08Tips & Tricks

Tips

  • Put zeal on left click and fanaticism on right by default. Hotkey sacrifice, vengeance, joust and holy shield so switching is instant.
  • Recast holy shield every time you enter a new area. Its block bonus is the core of your defense, and the character sheet only shows the right block % while it is active.
  • Do not use sacrifice as your main attack while you have no life leech. 3% max life per hit adds up very quickly.
  • sacrifice corpse explosions deal 5% of the dead monster's life + 125% of overkill. Kill the biggest monsters in a pack with sacrifice to chain explosions through the trash.
  • Hit your zeal IAS breakpoint before stacking damage. The jump from one zeal frame breakpoint to the next is worth more than 50% ED.
  • joust has a cooldown that shrinks with skill level (+skills count). Alma Negra cuts another 0.5 s. Use joust between packs, not inside them.
  • Cannot be frozen (Raven Frost, Runeword120, sanctuary, The Gladiator's Bane) is mandatory before Hell. Being frozen in melee is how Zealers die.
  • Use superior or ethereal bases for weapon runewords. More base damage multiplies with all of your ED and fanaticism.
  • Stamina and Thawing potions help: joust and charge travel quickly, and Thawing gives cold res plus half freeze duration in emergencies.
  • Read map mods before entering: physical reflect, monster physical resistance and extra-strong curses hurt this build far more than fire/cold/lightning mods.
  • Fanazealot targets 15%+ life leech (18%+ high-end). Without that, sacrifice drains you; keep using zeal.
  • Odealo: check your attack rating. 8,000-10,000+ is comfortable endgame. blessed aim hard points, Raven Frost, Alma Negra and Herald of Zakarum all help.
  • Runeword69 gives a might aura, and two might auras (yours plus the merc's) do not stack (vanilla rule). With Runeword69, an Act 5 battle orders merc (Zagdem) is a good alternative.

Where to farm

  • Countess (Act 1 Forgotten Tower), Normal -> Hell: 'Very high chance to drop at least one Rune every time' (Odealo starter items). r07/r05 for Runeword133 early, r11/r12 for Runeword55/Runeword75 in Nightmare.
  • Nightmare Chaos Sanctuary: Zagdem: farm Nightmare Chaos until ~level 65 before moving to Hell Travincal.
  • Hell Travincal (Council): Zagdem's S9 guide: Travincal from level 50-60 is an excellent early-ladder Zealer farm (gold, uniques, runes). Avoid conviction-aura packs.
  • Hell Mephisto: naomino: farm Mephisto for unique drops when your gear is weak.
  • Maps T1-T3 (clvl 80+): joust between packs for mapping (Odealo). Prefer dense melee-friendly maps and skip physical-immune-heavy ones.
  • Uber Tristram (Pandemonium): Fanazealot is built as an Ubertrist Zealer: max block, high leech, sacrifice for single targets.

Hardcore

Zealer is one of the safer melee options for Hardcore because of the 75% block cap, but play it defensively:
  • Put holy shield points in earlier (e.g. alternate holy shield with sacrifice from clvl 30) and raise Dexterity as soon as you have a decent Paladin shield.
  • Aim for 48% FHR at least, 86% if possible (Guillaume's Face 30 + Runeword133 20 + FHR small charms).
  • Shaftstop, Veil of Steel, Verdugo's Hearty Cord and String of Ears (Odealo's defensive options) give physical damage reduction. Do not take all damage gear at once.
  • Never sacrifice at low life; switch to zeal if leech cannot keep up. In S14 the 3% max life cost cannot be mitigated.
  • Avoid packs with Lightning Enchanted + Multishot, Oblivion Knights (iron maiden / decrepify), and map mods with physical reflect.
  • joust is a gap closer, not an escape: it teleports you into the target. Have a town portal or a safe retreat path.
  • Keep cannot be frozen and max resistances (75%) in Hell before you push maps. Keep a stack of full rejuvenation potions in your belt at all times.

09FAQ

About this build

Is the zeal/vengeance hybrid a real PD2 build?
Not as one endgame build. hiimpd2's S14 list has 'Physical Zeal' and 'Vengeance 1H' as separate builds (both Decent). The community 'Zealer to Vengeance' guide (naomino, S11) levels as a Zealer and then respecs fully into vengeance/conviction for Hell. Zeal's synergy is sacrifice and Vengeance's synergies are the elemental auras, so splitting points weakens both. This guide therefore covers the proven Physical Zealer and keeps vengeance at its 1 prerequisite point for joust.
Should I play Physical sacrifice or vengeance instead?
For maximum S14 power, hiimpd2 rates the sacrifice Paladins (Physical / Light / holy fire sacrifice) Top tier. For a vengeance main, follow hiimpd2's 'Vengeance 1H' or naomino's respec route. If you like Zeal's playstyle and max-block safety, stay a Zealer.
Where do I get Runeword133 early / how do I farm r07 and r05?
Runeword133 is r07 + r05 in any 2-socket body armor (clvl 17). Both runes drop from monsters in Normal Acts 1-3 and from the Countess (Forgotten Tower level 5, Act 1). The Countess always drops runes and her Normal/Nightmare table covers r07 and r05. You can also cube up: 3 r04 -> r05, 3 r06 -> r07. A few Countess runs at clvl 12-17 usually do it. Trade for them otherwise; they are cheap.
Which merc should I use?
Act 5 Barbarian with might and an amplify damage weapon (The Gavel of Pain -> The Cranium Basher), per Odealo's pre-launch S14 Zealer guide. While leveling, an Act 2 defiance merc with Runeword62 is the common budget choice (naomino; Odealo starter items). For Travincal farming, Zagdem uses the Act 5 battle orders merc. There is no Act 2 might or holy freeze merc in PD2.
When should I respec?
Never for this build: zeal is the main skill from level 1 (Odealo). Use Akara's free respec (once per difficulty after Den of Evil) to fix mistakes. If you want vengeance, the community route (naomino) is a full respec into vengeance/conviction at Hell entry. Later respecs need a Token of Absolution.
How do I handle immunes?
amplify damage sources (Headhunter's Glory, Atma's Scarab, the Act 5 merc's The Cranium Basher / The Gavel of Pain), crushing blow and deadly strike, and your merc (Odealo). Your 1-point vengeance adds fire, cold and lightning as an emergency option. Elemental immunes do not matter.
What are the best farming spots?
Countess for runes early. Nightmare Chaos until ~65 and Hell Travincal from ~50-60 (Zagdem). Mephisto for uniques (naomino). T1-T3 maps with joust at clvl 80+ (Odealo). Uber Tristram once geared (Fanazealot).
Is the build safe for Hardcore?
Yes, it is one of the safer melee builds thanks to 75% block from holy shield + Dexterity. You still need 48%+ FHR, cannot be frozen, max res in Hell, life leech and some physical damage reduction. Prioritise holy shield earlier than the softcore order, and never spam sacrifice at low life.
What IAS do I need for zeal?
In PD2 zeal has its own multi-hit table based on Total Attack Speed (item IAS after diminishing returns + Fanaticism's skill IAS - weapon speed modifier). The fastest 1H swinging breakpoint for hits 1-2 is at 75 Total Attack Speed. With max fanaticism that means about 9% item IAS on a 7cr, about 37% on a Caduceus/7ls, or about 56% on a 7bs/crs. Confirm with the PD2 wiki breakpoint page for your exact setup.
What about Runeword47 and Runeword14?
Both exist in S14. Runeword14 (r14 + r22 + r30 + r24, 4-socket body armor, clvl 63) is Fanazealot's high-end body armor in utp: +2 all skills, 8-12% life steal, 35-45 all res, +20 Str. Odealo's pre-launch S14 guide uses Runeword41 instead, so either is a valid endgame chest. Runeword47 (r05 + r03 + r28 + r23 + r08, 5-socket swords/axes/polearms, clvl 59) also exists, but PD2 changed it from +340-400 damage to adds 280-320/360 damage (PD2 wiki RWWeapons), and Fanazealot calls it 'no longer a real option for this char' after the PD2 nerf. Neither community Zealer guide recommends it; the weapons they use are Runeword69, Runeword20, Runeword11 and Schaefer's Hammer.
Can I use a two-handed weapon (e.g. Leoric's Mithril Blade, The Grandfather)?
You can. zeal works with any melee weapon and Leoric's Mithril Blade even reduces Joust's cooldown. But you lose your shield, so holy shield and the 75% block cap are gone. Then you are a different (glassier) build with its own zeal breakpoint table (2H sword). This guide stays with 1H + Paladin shield.
Does sacrifice still hurt me in S14?
Yes. Since S14 it costs a flat 3% of your maximum life per use instead of a percentage of the damage dealt. That is predictable but cannot be mitigated by resistances or damage reduction. Life leech (Dracul's Grasp, String of Ears, Blood crafts, Last Wish's life tap) is what keeps you topped off.
Where do the spare points go at the end?
Once zeal, sacrifice, fanaticism and holy shield are maxed and joust is at ~5 (Odealo), Fanazealot lists blessed aim, joust, resist auras or holy shield/defiance as the options. This guide uses blessed aim for attack rating plus salvation 1. Zagdem instead puts ~10 points each in resist fire / resist lightning for +max resistance on a Travincal farmer. redemption (+25% sacrifice damage per hard point) is a sacrifice-build choice, not part of the community Zealer allocations.

Leveling questions

When exactly should I switch to blessed hammer?
The common community timing is clvl 19 after Act 3 (Maxroll) or as soon as 18 (Icy Veins). Level with holy fire + resist fire until then, then use Akara's free Normal respec: holy bolt 1, holy light 1, might 1, blessed aim 8, blessed hammer 2, concentration 2, prayer 1, defiance 1, vigor 2, smite 1. After that, every level goes into blessed hammer until 20.
Is the Act 2 might merc still the best?
There is no Act 2 might merc in PD2. Act 2 offers defiance, blessed aim and thorns. For a Hammerdin, hire the Act 4 Light Ascendant: her sanctuary aura lowers monster magic resistance. For a melee Paladin, Act 2 defiance or the Act 5 Barbarian (who has might in PD2) are the usual picks.
Do I need Energy for Hammer?
No. Put Runeword62 on the merc's staff for meditation and use Runeword75/Runeword130 mana. In S14 Paladins also gain +2 mana per level. Early on, a few mana potions are cheaper than stat points.
Why does my Hammer miss enemies that are far away?
Hammers spiral outward from your position in a fixed pattern. A target at the wrong distance is only clipped occasionally. Walk up so the enemy is right next to you; the spiral then passes through it on every cast.
Can I level as a holy bolt / fist of the heavens caster instead?
Yes. In PD2 holy bolt hurts every monster, and the holy bolt / holy light / fist of the heavens / holy nova tree synergizes internally. It is mana-hungry early (take the Act 1 Cold Rogue for meditation), and hiimpd2 rates it Mid for mapping, below Hammerdin.
Is sacrifice still good after the S14 change?
Yes. sacrifice now costs 3% of maximum life per hit, instead of a percentage of your physical damage (S14 patch notes). hiimpd2 lists Light, Physical and holy fire sacrifice as Top tier for S14 solo mapping. You need life leech to sustain it.
Where do I get r07 and r05 for Runeword133?
Act 1 Normal Countess (Forgotten Tower, Black Marsh) drops low runes every kill. r05 also drops from regular Act 1-2 monsters. r07 can be cubed from 3 r06.
Which shield should a Paladin use while leveling?
A paladin-only shield (pa1, pa2, pa3, pa4, pa5, pa6/pa2...). They roll innate resistances and up to 4 sockets: Runeword1 at 21, Runeword130 at 25, Runeword120 at 29. Herald of Zakarum (clvl 42) is the unique to look for later.

General PD2 questions

How do I respec: Akara or a Token of Absolution?
Akara: after you finish Den of Evil, Akara offers one free full respec (skills and stats) per difficulty. Use the Normal one right after switching from your leveling build. Respeccing early is fine because you get more chances later.
Token of Absolution: cube one of each of the four essences:
  • tes (Andariel ~16%, Duriel ~21%)
  • ceh (Mephisto ~8.3%)
  • bet (Diablo ~8.3%)
  • fed (Baal ~8.3%)
In PD2 the essences drop in Nightmare and Hell at the same rates, and they stack in the materials tab. Right-click the token to reset all skill and stat points. Tokens are also easy to buy from other players, so a respec is rarely a big deal. Experiment with builds freely.
Which mercenary should I hire?
PD2 reworked every merc. They have the same stats whichever difficulty you hire them in, and they all wear helm, armor, gloves, boots and belt. The PD2 merc table:
  • Act 1 Rogue: Fire (vigor aura), Cold (meditation), Physical (slow movement). Bows and crossbows.
  • Act 2 Desert Guard: Defensive (defiance), Offensive (blessed aim), Combat (thorns). Polearms, spears and javelins; one-handed weapons do double damage. There is no might, prayer or holy freeze Act 2 merc in PD2.
  • Act 3 Iron Wolf: Fire (cleansing), Cold (prayer), Lightning (holy shock plus static field, which Season 14 reduced to 8% life).
  • Act 4 Ascendant (new): Dark (casts amplify damage), Light (sanctuary). Staves.
  • Act 5 Barbarian: Combat (might), Warcries (battle orders plus battle cry).
The usual default is an Act 2 defiance merc in Runeword62 (mana, and survives well). Physical builds love might or battle orders, and casters often like Act 3 Cold for prayer. Season 14 mercs get full XP from your kills, so they keep up easily.
What are breakpoints and which ones matter?
Diablo 2 animations run in whole frames, so Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR), Faster Block Rate and Increased Attack Speed only help once you reach the next threshold. Anything between thresholds is wasted. PD2 uses the vanilla FCR tables, for example:
  • Sorceress FCR: 0/9/20/37/63/105/200. frozen orb and chain lightning use a slower table, 0/7/15/23/35/52/78/117/194.
  • Paladin and Necromancer FCR: 0/9/18/30/48/75/125.
For most casters, 105% (Sorceress) or 75% (Paladin and Necromancer) is the main target. Get one or two FHR breakpoints for survival, such as 42-60% on a Sorceress. PD2 attack mechanics differ from vanilla: whirlwind ignores IAS and hits at fixed intervals, berserk uses Frenzy breakpoints, and item IAS has diminishing returns. Use the PD2 wiki breakpoint tables or an S14-aware planner for your class and weapon. Check a breakpoint before paying a lot for 5% more FCR.
Where do I get Runeword133 early, and how do I farm r07 and r05?
Runeword133 is r07 + r05 in a 2-socket body armor and needs clvl 17. It gives 20% FCR, 20% FHR, 10% faster run/walk, +6 Dexterity and 3 magic damage reduction, which makes it the standard leveling armor for nearly every class.
  • Base: any 2-socket body armor. qui, lea and hla (max 2 sockets) are cheap and light. Check Charsi and later vendors for socketed armor, or keep grey 2-socket drops from Act 1-2.
  • r05: a common drop in Normal Act 1-2 (r05 needs clvl 15). You can also cube 3 r04 into 1 r05.
  • r07: farm the Countess in the Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh, Act 1). Her rune table goes up to r08 in Normal, so r07 comes up regularly. Or cube 3 r06 into 1 r07.
Save spare Tals: they also go into Runeword1, Runeword130 and Runeword62. With Season 14's stash rework, runes stack in their own tab and upgrades need no key.
How does corruption with Worldstone Shards work?
Put an item and a wss in the cube and transmute. The result depends on the item:
  • Normal (white/grey) items without sockets: 50% they gain sockets (up to the base maximum), 50% they become a random rare.
  • Magic, rare, set or unique items that can have sockets (helm, chest, shield, weapon, quiver): 25% sockets (1-3 on armor, 2-4 on one-handed weapons, 3-6 on two-handed), 50% a corruption modifier, 25% "brick" into a random rare of the same type.
  • Items that cannot have sockets (gloves, boots, belt, ring, amulet): 75% a corruption modifier, 25% brick.
Modifiers come in low, mid and high rarity tiers. High-rarity rolls are things like +1 all skills or 20% FCR on chests, +1 all skills on weapons, helms and shields, or +15% FRW on boots. A corrupted item can never be corrupted again, but most other recipes still work on it, including Puzzleboxes for sockets afterwards. Runewords count as regular socketed items and can't be corrupted. Make the base corrupt first.
What should I corrupt, and in which order?
Corrupt items where a 25% brick doesn't hurt much and a good roll is worth a lot:
  • Runeword bases before you socket them. A white 0-socket base has a 50% chance to get max sockets, so it is the cheap way to make Runeword130 shields, Runeword62 polearms or 4-socket armor. A bricked white base costs almost nothing.
  • Duplicate uniques or sets, or cheap ones you have spares of. Aim for sockets or high-rarity modifiers.
  • Rings, amulets, gloves, boots and belts that are good but replaceable: 75% to gain a modifier.
  • Annihilus uses the special cwss from Rathma, not a normal shard.
For socketable uniques, the community advice is to corrupt first and Puzzlebox second. Shards are cheaper than Puzzleboxes, and boxing first doesn't lower the 25% brick chance, so you'd risk losing the box. Never corrupt your only copy of a build-defining item unless you can afford to lose it.
Do Runeword47 and Runeword14 exist in PD2, and which runewords are new in Season 14?
Yes, both exist in Season 14, but PD2 reworked many runewords, so read the S14 stats rather than vanilla numbers (some older lists and planners show them under placeholder names such as "Runeword47" or "Runeword14"):
PD2 also changed many vanilla runewords. Runeword130 has a staff version with +2 skills, and Runeword62 gives 35% FCR. Read the S14 numbers on the site before buying runes.
How do maps work, and what do I need to open one?
Maps are PD2's endgame zones. To open one you need a level 80+ character who has killed the Hell Ancients. Right-click the map in your inventory while in Harrogath in Hell. Only one map or uber zone can be opened per game. The tiers:
  • Tier 1: area level 87
  • Tier 2: area level 88
  • Tier 3: area level 89
  • Tier 4 (dungeons): area level 92, made from a T3 map with a scrb and meant for strong groups
Your first maps come from Anya's Hell reward, rare drops in Hell and Nightmare Act 5, and corrupted zones. After that, maps mostly drop inside maps, with a chance of higher-tier maps. Each map has affixes that add density, experience and magic/gold find, plus monster modifiers. Before opening a map, check its immunities against your build. Map events (11% on normal, 22% magic, 33% rare maps) add bonus content such as the Treasure Fallen, the Dark Wanderer (extra Worldstone Shards) or Shadow of Mendeln (rtmv).

10Season 14 changes

S13 -> S14 changes that matter for a Zealer, per the PD2 wiki Patch Notes. Calculations are approximate.
  • sacrifice cost (the big one): it now costs a flat 3% of your maximum life per hit instead of a percentage of your physical damage. Example: with 2,500 life, every sacrifice costs 75 life; at ~3 hits per second that is ~225 life/s your leech has to cover, no matter how hard you hit. High-damage setups no longer pay more. The patch also fixed the explosion-radius tooltip, which showed half the real radius (now min(4 + level/3, 10)).
  • Paladin mana: +1.5 -> +2 mana per level and per energy. At clvl 90 that is about +45 base mana (89 x 0.5), i.e. one extra holy shield cast (35 mana) and fewer mana problems while leveling.
  • concentration (your aura from 18 to 30): base uninterruptible chance 20% -> 15%, plus 1% per 3 levels. Slightly worse while leveling, irrelevant once you have fanaticism.
  • amplify damage: the skill's base physical resistance reduction went from -11% to -15%, but the patch notes say item procs had their level adjusted so they keep their old values. Your sources (Atma's Scarab, Headhunter's Glory, the merc's The Gavel of Pain) therefore reduce physical resistance exactly as in S13.
  • The Cranium Basher (merc weapon): amplify damage proc chance 8% -> 14% (same -% physical resistance per proc), so it procs about 1.75x as often.
  • decrepify (Runeword37 proc): the skill's slow went from -10% to -20% and its physical resistance now scales -1% per 2 levels, but procs were re-levelled: per the patch notes the slow on procs is slightly better and the -% physical resistance stays the same as before.
  • Rare items: dropped rare helms, chests and shields can now roll +2 Paladin skills. A rare +2 helm with FHR/res is a new mid-game alternative to Guillaume's Face for skill-focused setups.
  • Mercenaries: full experience credit from your kills, and no level-difference XP penalty, so your Act 2 leveling merc and your Act 5 might merc keep up with you without extra effort.
  • Unchanged: zeal, fanaticism, holy shield, joust and vengeance had no S14 changes. Neither did the core items (Alma Negra, Herald of Zakarum, Runeword69, Runeword20, Runeword41, Guillaume's Face, Dracul's Grasp, Raven Frost). The S14 rune socket buffs (r21/r05/r25/r26/r27/r28) are defensive (max resistances, defense, mana regen) and do not change your weapon sockets. Smite's S14 buff (+20% splash, life/mana steal) does not matter at 1 point.
