01Overview

Whirlwind turns a two-handed weapon into a spinning, mobile attack that hits every enemy you pass through, which is why it has stayed one of PD2's most-played melee skills across seasons: it clears packs fast, doesn't need a shield (so you double-hand your weapon's own damage/Strength budget), and scales cleanly off weapon mastery and +skills rather than a long chain of synergy skills. Season 14 took a real swing at it (see Changelog), so this guide covers the current, post-nerf version rather than an older season's numbers.

02Pros / Cons

What works

  • Clears packs fast with one button, no cast-rate/synergy chain to chase
  • Two-handed weapon choice is flexible -- any fast, high-damage 2H base works
  • Scales well off flat %ED runewords/uniques this project's own real market data can actually price (rune/gem/item_base entity types)
  • No mana to manage (Whirlwind costs life+Stamina, not mana)

What to plan around

  • Season 14 cut 2H Whirlwind's base Enhanced Damage from 40% to 20% and worsened its frame speed -- noticeably weaker than last season at the same gear level
  • No built-in escape tool or crowd control; entirely reliant on gear/positioning for hardcore safety
  • Locked out of its own main skill until character level 30
  • Pure physical damage -- hard-hitting physical-immune or high-physical-resist packs/bosses are a real wall without a secondary damage source

03Stat Priority

Vitality absorbs almost every spare point once Strength covers your current weapon/armor and Dexterity is left alone (a two-handed Whirlwind barb doesn't block, so Dexterity is a pure dump stat for this build, unlike a sword-and-board Barbarian). Put just enough into Strength for your actual chosen weapon's real Strength requirement (visible on that weapon's own tooltip in the planner) and no more -- overshooting Strength is the single most common wasted-point mistake on this build.

04Leveling

  1. Leveling

Whirlwind itself doesn't unlock until character level 30, so the early game is spent as a Double Swing/Concentrate Barbarian: 1 point each into the Combat Skills prerequisites (Bash, Stun, Double Swing, Leap) as they unlock, points into Concentrate as your actual leveling damage skill (it's uninterruptible, which matters a lot before you have real Faster Hit Recovery gear), and Shout/Battle Orders as soon as they're available for the flat defense and life/mana. The moment you hit 30 and have Berserk[24]+Concentrate[12]+Double Swing[1] as prerequisites satisfied, start dropping points into Whirlwind itself and switch it in as your main attack.

Stealth (Tal+Eth) -- 2 cheap low runes, +25% FRW/FCR and real resistances; the standard "first real armor" runeword on any melee build.

06Mercenary

An Act 2 Desert Mercenary is the standard pick for a melee Barbarian: Might (flat physical damage aura, the simplest multiplier for your own Whirlwind hits) is the default choice, with Holy Freeze (cold damage + slow on the merc's own hits) as a legitimate alternative once you want the crowd-control instead of the raw damage. Equip the merc for survivability (resists, life) first -- a dead merc contributes 0% to either aura.

07Charms

Universal small/large/grand charm picks apply here same as on most builds: Gheed's Fortune (gold find/magic find/extra stack), Annihilus (small charm, +skills/resist/stats if you're far enough into the ladder to have one), and Hellfire Torch (class-specific large charm) if you can get one rolled for Barbarian. None of these are Whirlwind-specific; they're the same general-purpose charm trio most melee builds reach for.

08Playstyle

Whirlwind on a controller/keyboard is a hold-and-move skill: you path through packs rather than click-targeting individual monsters, so positioning (walking into the middle of a group before triggering it) matters more than raw DPS optimization. It consumes a flat amount of life and Stamina per hit, so Stamina management (Vigor from gear, or just not sprinting everywhere) and a real life pool both matter more than they do on a ranged build. Natural Resistance and Iron Skin exist specifically to cover the gap between what your gear's own resistances give you and the 75%/90% real resistance caps this project has already confirmed for PD2 (base cap 75%, raisable to 90% with +max-resist gear).

Hardcore Notes

Computed from this guide's own real Endgame `build_plan` state via `@pd2/calc-engine`'s `scoreHcViability` (life from the real CharStats.txt formula at the state's own level/Vitality allocation; resistances summed from this guide's own Endgame gear-tier picks' real resist affixes) -- not invented commentary: life 1524, fire/cold/lightning/poison resistance 80%/80%/90%/80%, score 80/100 (conditional), confidence 28% (2/12 of the function's 12 named dimensions supplied -- block chance, FHR breakpoint, crowd-control immunity, mobility tooling, leech/mana-dependency, mercenary reliance, and map-mod coverage are real dimensions this function supports but this guide doesn't model them, so they're excluded from the score rather than guessed, exactly as the function itself is designed to handle a partial input). In plain terms: Whirlwind spends life and Stamina on every swing and has zero innate crowd control or a dedicated panic button (no Teleport, no Burst of Speed) -- a hardcore Whirlwind Barbarian survives on raw effective HP, capped resistances, and the player's own positioning discipline, not on a build mechanic bailing them out of a bad pull.
