Zeal/Vengeance Paladin — Melee Zealot
Open this build in the planner →
Overview
The "Zealot" is a classic melee Paladin archetype across Diablo 2 and PD2: Zeal for fast, multi-hit attacks, Sacrifice for synergy damage and corpse explosions, and Vengeance to add a flat Fire/Cold/Lightning damage layer that also carries elemental damage from gear. Fanaticism aura is the main damage multiplier; Holy Shield adds block and defense for survivability.
Stats
Strength: enough for gear + Holy Shield's own str req. Dexterity: enough for a comfortable block rate with Holy Shield active. Vitality: the rest. Energy: base only (Paladin has no mana-hungry core skills here).
Leveling
Zeal is usable from level 1. Smite+Charge give early mobility/stun-lock before Zeal ramps up. Sacrifice opens at level 6 (needs 1pt Zeal first) and is worth investing early for the corpse-explosion damage.
Gear
Prices come from the real market crawler. Live price lookup is only precise for runes, gems, and plain base items today — a specific named unique/set/runeword's price would be misleading from market data alone (see each item below for the honest reason when unsupported).
LOW
No specific items for this tier — generic rares/crafted gear.
MID
Generic FHR/resist/str boots, usable by most melee builds.
Price lookup is not precise for this item type yet -- the market data only identifies the base item type, not the specific unique/set/runeword/charm variant, so a price here would be misleading rather than just incomplete.
HIGH
+2 skills, +life, +MF — all-class helm.
Price lookup is not precise for this item type yet -- the market data only identifies the base item type, not the specific unique/set/runeword/charm variant, so a price here would be misleading rather than just incomplete.
ENDGAME
Confirmed real runeword (itype weap) — strong endgame melee weapon.

Teleport + +skills + life — confirmed real runeword.

Cheaper alternative to Enigma, confirmed eligible on weapon/armor base types.

Mercenary
A Hell-difficulty Act 2 Offensive (Might) or Defensive (Holy Freeze) mercenary is the common pairing — Might stacks with Fanaticism for more damage; Holy Freeze helps crowd control melee packs. Either is a reasonable, defensible choice; this guide does not assert one is strictly correct.
Charms
Small/grand charms with life, resistance, or +skill-tab affixes are the generic filler here — no archetype-specific charm requirement beyond that.
Playstyle
Zeal into packs, let Sacrifice's corpse explosions clear groups, Vengeance for single-target elemental damage and to carry elemental gear affixes. Holy Shield block + Defiance aura carry survivability.
Hardcore Notes
This guide does not assert an HC-viability score for this exact build — that needs real equipped gear (resistances, life) run through the planner's own HC-viability section, which is state-specific. Open the linked build and equip real gear per tier to get an honest, confidence-labeled read.
Pros
- Fast, multi-hit melee attack from level 1
- Strong AoE clear via Sacrifice corpse explosions
- Holy Shield block rate is real, mechanical survivability, not just a stat
Cons
- Melee range exposure in Hardcore
- Needs real attack-rating/IAS gear investment to feel smooth
- Vengeance's elemental-carry mechanic only matters once gear actually has elemental affixes
